4.2 Connecting Test Leads
Always connect the test leads correctly for the desired measurement:
- Insert the black test lead into the COM (Common) jack.
- For most voltage, resistance, continuity, diode, capacitance, and frequency measurements, insert the red test lead into the VΩHz jack.
- For current measurements up to 400mA, insert the red test lead into the mAµA jack.
- For high current measurements up to 10A, insert the red test lead into the 10A jack.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Power On/Off
Rotate the function switch from the OFF position to any desired measurement function to turn the multimeter ON. To turn the multimeter OFF, rotate the function switch back to the OFF position.
5.2 Measurement Functions
Select the desired measurement function by rotating the central rotary switch. Use the 'SELECT' button to toggle between AC/DC modes or different sub-functions within a range (e.g., Resistance, Diode, Continuity).
- Voltage Measurement (V~ / V-): Connect leads in parallel with the circuit.
- Current Measurement (A~ / A-): Connect leads in series with the circuit. Ensure correct jack (mAµA or 10A) is used.
- Resistance Measurement (Ω): Ensure circuit is de-energized before measuring.
- Capacitance Measurement (F): Ensure capacitor is discharged before measuring.
- Diode Test (→|): Used to check diode functionality and forward voltage drop.
- Continuity Test (•))): Emits an audible tone if resistance is below a certain threshold.
- Frequency (Hz) / Duty Cycle (%): Measures the frequency and duty cycle of AC signals.
- Temperature Measurement (°C/°F): Use the included temperature probe.

5.3 Special Functions
- RANGE: Press to manually select a range instead of auto-ranging.
- RELΔ (Relative Measurement): Press to store the current reading as a reference for subsequent measurements.
- MAX/MIN: Press to display the maximum or minimum reading recorded during a measurement session.
- HOLD/* (Data Hold/Backlight): Press briefly to hold the current reading. Press and hold to toggle the backlight.
- NCV (Non-Contact Voltage): Detects AC voltage without direct contact.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
Wipe the case with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Do not use abrasives or solvents. Keep the terminals free of dirt and moisture.
6.2 Battery Replacement
Refer to Section 4.1 for battery replacement instructions when the low battery indicator appears on the display.
6.3 Fuse Replacement
If the current measurement function fails, the fuse may need replacement. This should only be performed by qualified personnel. Refer to the specifications for fuse type and rating.
6.4 Storage
If the multimeter is not used for a long period, remove the batteries to prevent leakage and damage. Store the device in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your ANENG AN870 Multimeter, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No display or dim display | Low or dead batteries; Incorrect battery installation. | Replace batteries; Check battery polarity. |
| "OL" (Overload) displayed | Input value exceeds selected range; Input value exceeds maximum rating. | Switch to a higher range (if not in auto-range); Ensure input is within device limits. |
| Inaccurate readings | Poor test lead connection; Interference; Damaged test leads. | Ensure leads are firmly connected; Move away from strong electromagnetic fields; Replace damaged leads. |
| Current measurement not working | Blown fuse; Incorrect lead connection. | Check and replace fuse (if qualified); Ensure red lead is in mAµA or 10A jack. |
