5. Operating Instructions

5.1 Brewing Coffee with Fresh Beans

  1. Fill Water Tank: Open the water tank lid and fill with fresh, cold water to the desired level, corresponding to the number of cups you wish to brew (up to 1.0 liter / 8 cups).
  2. Add Coffee Beans: Open the bean hopper lid and add whole coffee beans. The hopper can hold up to 200g of beans. Close the lid securely.
  3. Insert Filter: Ensure the permanent filter is correctly placed in the filter basket holder. Alternatively, you can use a standard paper filter (size 4) if preferred.
  4. Place Carafe: Position the thermal carafe on the warming plate, ensuring it is correctly aligned to activate the drip-stop mechanism.
  5. Select Grind Setting: Use the grind setting dial to choose your preferred grind fineness. There are 8 grind settings available, from coarse to fine.
  6. Select Coffee Strength/Cups: Use the control panel to select the desired coffee strength and the number of cups (e.g., 2, 4, 6, or 8 cups).
  7. Start Brewing: Press the START/STOP button to begin the brewing process. The machine will grind the selected amount of beans and then proceed with brewing.
  8. Enjoy: Once brewing is complete, the machine will automatically switch off. Carefully remove the thermal carafe and serve. The thermal carafe will keep your coffee warm for an extended period.

5.2 Brewing Coffee with Pre-Ground Coffee

Your GASTROBACK coffee machine also allows you to use pre-ground coffee:

  1. Follow steps 1, 3, and 4 from "Brewing Coffee with Fresh Beans".
  2. Add Ground Coffee: Instead of adding beans to the hopper, add the desired amount of pre-ground coffee directly into the permanent filter (or paper filter). Do not overfill.
  3. Select Ground Coffee Mode: On the control panel, select the pre-ground coffee mode (usually indicated by a specific icon). This bypasses the grinder.
  4. Select Coffee Strength/Cups: Select the desired coffee strength and number of cups.
  5. Start Brewing: Press the START/STOP button to begin brewing.

5.3 Timer Function

The 24-hour programmable timer allows you to set the machine to start brewing at a specific time:

  1. Prepare the machine as if you were going to brew coffee (fill water, add beans/ground coffee, place carafe).
  2. Press the "PROG" or "Timer" button on the control panel.
  3. Use the hour and minute buttons to set the desired start time.
  4. Confirm the setting (refer to the display for confirmation). The machine will now be in standby mode, ready to brew at the programmed time.

6. Maintenance

6.1 Daily Cleaning

Regular cleaning ensures optimal performance and taste:

  • Always unplug the appliance before cleaning.
  • Wash the thermal carafe, filter basket, and permanent filter after each use with warm, soapy water. Rinse thoroughly and dry. These parts are generally dishwasher safe on the top rack, but hand washing is recommended for longevity.
  • Wipe the exterior of the coffee machine with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or scouring pads.
  • Clean the bean hopper regularly to remove oil residue from coffee beans, which can affect flavor and grinder performance. Use a dry brush or cloth.
  • Empty and clean the drip tray as needed.

6.2 Descaling

Mineral deposits (limescale) can build up in your coffee machine over time, affecting performance and coffee taste. Descale your machine regularly, depending on water hardness and frequency of use (e.g., every 2-3 months).

  1. Prepare a descaling solution according to the descaler manufacturer's instructions (e.g., white vinegar and water, or a commercial descaling agent).
  2. Pour the descaling solution into the water tank.
  3. Place the empty thermal carafe on the warming plate.
  4. Run a brewing cycle without coffee. Allow the full cycle to complete.
  5. After the cycle, discard the descaling solution from the carafe.
  6. Rinse the machine by running at least two full brewing cycles with fresh, clean water to remove any residual descaling solution.
