LCD Interface

The LCD display provides comprehensive information about the UPS status and power conditions. It can show details such as load capacity, battery charge level, estimated runtime, input/output voltage, and various operational modes. Use the buttons on the front panel to navigate through the display options.

5. Setup

5.1. Battery Connection

The battery is shipped disconnected for safety. Before initial use, you must connect the internal battery. Refer to the specific instructions provided in the quick start guide or the full manual for your model to correctly connect the battery terminals. Ensure a firm connection to prevent power interruptions.

5.2. Connecting Equipment

Connect your critical electronic devices (computer, monitor, external hard drives, etc.) to the 'Battery + Surge' protected outlets on the rear of the UPS. These outlets provide both battery backup during power outages and surge protection. Non-critical devices can be connected to surge-only outlets if available on other models, but for the BR900MI, all six outlets offer both.

5.3. Initial Charging

After connecting the battery and your equipment, plug the UPS power cord into a grounded wall outlet. Allow the UPS to charge for at least 24 hours before initial use to ensure maximum battery runtime. The UPS will provide surge protection even if the battery is not fully charged.

6. Operating the UPS

6.1. Turning On/Off

  • To Turn On: Press the power button on the front panel. The LCD will illuminate, and the UPS will perform a self-test.
  • To Turn Off: Press and hold the power button until the UPS shuts down.

6.2. Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR)

The BR900MI features Automatic Voltage Regulation (AVR), which automatically corrects minor voltage fluctuations (brownouts and overvoltages) without switching to battery power. This extends battery life and ensures a stable power supply to your connected devices.

6.3. Dataline Protection

Connect your network cable (Ethernet) or telephone line through the designated 'Gigabit In' and 'Gigabit Out' or 'Tel In' and 'Tel Out' ports on the rear of the UPS. This provides surge protection for your data lines, safeguarding your network devices and modems from power surges traveling through data cables.

6.4. Runtime Graph

Runtime graph for APC Back-UPS Pro BR900MI showing battery runtime versus load in watts.

Figure 6.1: Runtime Graph. This graph illustrates the approximate battery runtime (in minutes) of the BR900MI based on the connected load (in watts). As the load increases, the available runtime decreases. This helps users estimate how long their devices will remain powered during an outage.

7. Maintenance

7.1. Battery Replacement

The internal battery is a sealed lead-acid battery with a typical lifespan of 3-5 years, depending on usage and environmental conditions. When the battery needs replacement, the UPS will typically indicate this via an alarm or an icon on the LCD. Always replace the battery with an APC-approved replacement battery to ensure optimal performance and safety. Refer to the user manual for specific battery replacement procedures.

7.2. Cleaning

Clean the exterior of the UPS with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use liquid or aerosol cleaners. Ensure ventilation openings are clear of dust and debris to maintain proper airflow.
