The Yaesu SSM-17B is a compact speaker microphone designed for use with compatible Yaesu two-way radios. This accessory provides convenient communication by integrating a speaker and microphone into a single handheld unit, allowing for clear audio transmission and reception without needing to hold the radio directly to the ear or mouth.

Compatibility

The SSM-17B speaker microphone is compatible with the following Yaesu radio models:

This model replaces the SSM-16B. For compatibility with other Yaesu Standard Horizon Radios, please consult your radio's owner's manual or contact the manufacturer.

Setup

1. Power Off Radio: Ensure your Yaesu radio is powered off before connecting any accessories.
2. Locate Accessory Jack: Identify the external speaker/microphone jack on your compatible Yaesu radio. This is typically a two-pin connector port.
3. Connect Microphone: Align the two-pin connector of the SSM-17B speaker microphone with the radio's accessory jack. Gently push the connector firmly into place until it is fully seated. Do not force the connection.
4. Secure Connection (if applicable): Some radio models may have a screw-in retainer for the accessory connector. If present, tighten this screw to secure the microphone connection.
5. Power On Radio: Once the microphone is securely connected, power on your Yaesu radio.

Operating Instructions

• Receiving Audio: When the speaker microphone is connected, incoming audio from the radio will be routed through the speaker on the SSM-17B. Adjust the radio's volume control to your desired listening level.
• Transmitting (Push-to-Talk - PTT):
  1. Press and hold the Push-to-Talk (PTT) button located on the side of the speaker microphone.
  2. Speak clearly into the microphone grille, holding the unit approximately 2-5 cm (1-2 inches) from your mouth.
  3. Release the PTT button to return to receive mode.
• Microphone Placement: For optimal audio quality, ensure the microphone grille is not obstructed and is positioned towards your mouth during transmission.

Maintenance and Care

• Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the speaker microphone. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
• Water Resistance: The SSM-17B features an IP54 International Protection Rating, indicating it is protected against dust ingress and splashing water from any direction. While water resistant, it is not waterproof. Avoid submerging the unit in water or exposing it to heavy rain for extended periods. Ensure the connector is dry before connecting to the radio.
• Storage: Store the speaker microphone in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures when not in use.
• Cable Care: Avoid sharp bends or excessive pulling on the coiled cable to prevent internal damage.

Troubleshooting

• No Audio from Speaker:
  • Check if the microphone connector is fully seated in the radio's accessory jack.
  • Verify the radio's volume is turned up.
  • Ensure the radio is powered on and receiving a signal.
  • Test the radio with its internal speaker to confirm radio functionality.
• Cannot Transmit (PTT not working):
  • Confirm the microphone is securely connected to the radio.
  • Check if the radio is in a mode that allows transmission (e.g., not in scan mode or receiving a busy channel).
  • Ensure the PTT button is being pressed firmly.
• Poor Audio Quality (Transmit or Receive):
  • For transmit, ensure you are speaking clearly into the microphone and it is not obstructed.
  • For receive, check the radio's squelch setting and ensure the signal is strong.
  • Inspect the cable for any visible damage.
