2. Safety Information
- Always ensure the power supply is disconnected before performing any installation or maintenance.
- The unit is equipped with safety features: if the slider encounters resistance (e.g., an animal) during closing, the process will stop and resume after the obstruction is removed.
- A time delay for the light signal prevents unwanted opening due to lightning or brief changes in light conditions.
- The device automatically shuts off if the motor is overloaded.
- Keep the unit and its components out of reach of children and animals.
3. Package Contents
Please check that all the following components are included in your package:
- Control unit with integrated motor and wiring

4. Setup
Follow these steps to set up your automatic chicken door control unit:
- Mounting the Control Unit: Choose a suitable location on your chicken coop wall, protected from direct weather exposure if possible. Ensure it is positioned correctly relative to the door/slider.
- Installing the Door/Slider: If not already installed, mount the chicken door or slider (available separately in two sizes) according to its own instructions. Ensure it moves freely.
- Attaching Pulleys: Install the four reversible pulleys to guide the lifting string from the control unit to the chicken door. Position them to allow smooth, unobstructed movement of the string.
- Connecting the String: Thread the lifting string through the pulleys and attach it securely to the chicken door/slider. Ensure the string is taut but allows full range of motion for the door.
- Power Supply: The unit can be powered by either the 230 V mains adapter or the 4 x AA batteries. You can also use both power sources in parallel to ensure operation during power outages. Connect the chosen power source to the control unit.
- Light Sensor Placement: Position the light sensor in an area that accurately reflects the ambient light conditions for your desired opening/closing times. Avoid placing it in direct sunlight or constant shadow.

5. Operating Instructions
The automatic chicken door offers multiple operating modes:
5.1. Light-Dependent Control
This mode uses the light sensor to automatically open the door at dawn and close it at dusk. A configurable time delay for the light signal prevents premature opening or closing due to sudden light changes (e.g., lightning).
5.2. Time-Dependent Control
You can program specific opening and closing times. This mode allows for different schedules on weekdays and weekends, providing flexibility for your flock's routine.
5.3. Manual Control
The door can be opened or closed manually directly on the unit via its buttons, or through an external button connected to the unit (if applicable).
5.4. Safety Features in Operation
- Obstruction Detection: If the slider encounters resistance from an animal or other object during closing, the motor will stop. The process will then resume once the obstruction is cleared, preventing injury to animals.
- Motor Overload Protection: The unit is designed to automatically shut off if the motor experiences an overload, protecting the device from damage.
6. Maintenance
To ensure optimal performance and longevity of your Kerbl Automatic Chicken Door Control Unit, regular maintenance is recommended:
- Cleaning: Periodically clean the control unit and the door/slider mechanism to remove dirt, dust, and debris that could impede operation. Use a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners.
- String and Pulley Inspection: Regularly check the lifting string for fraying or wear. Inspect the pulleys to ensure they rotate freely and are not obstructed. Replace worn components as necessary.
- Battery Check: If using battery power, check the battery level periodically and replace all four AA batteries when indicated or when performance degrades.
- Door/Slider Movement: Ensure the chicken door/slider itself moves smoothly within its tracks without sticking or excessive friction. Lubricate tracks if necessary, using animal-safe lubricants.

7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your automatic chicken door, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Door does not open/close | No power; low batteries; obstruction; motor overload; sensor issue. | Check power connection/replace batteries. Remove any obstructions. Check for motor overload reset. Verify light sensor placement and cleanliness. |
| Door stops during closing | Obstruction detected. | Clear the path of the door. The unit will attempt to resume operation. |
| Door opens/closes at wrong times | Incorrect time settings; light sensor misplacement/dirt. | Adjust time settings. Reposition or clean the light sensor. Ensure no artificial light sources interfere with the sensor. |
| Motor makes unusual noise | Friction in door mechanism; worn string/pulleys; internal issue. | Check door tracks for smooth movement and lubricate if needed. Inspect string and pulleys for wear. If noise persists, contact support. |
