Setup
Battery Installation
The FT-818ND comes with a rechargeable Ni-MH battery pack (SBR-32MH). To install, ensure the transceiver is powered off. Locate the battery compartment on the rear of the unit. Open the compartment cover, insert the SBR-32MH battery pack, ensuring correct polarity, and then securely close the cover. Charge the battery fully before first use.
Antenna Connection
The FT-818ND features two antenna connectors for versatile setup. For HF/50MHz bands, use the SO-239 connector. For VHF/UHF bands, use the BNC connector. Connect an appropriate antenna for your desired operating frequency. Ensure connections are secure to prevent signal loss or damage.
Power Supply
For extended operation or higher power output (6W), connect the transceiver to an external DC power source (13.8V DC ±15%) using the supplied DC power cable. Ensure the power supply can provide sufficient current for the transceiver's operation. The transceiver can also operate on its internal Ni-MH battery for portable use.
Operating Instructions
Basic Operation
To power on the transceiver, press and hold the PWR button. Adjust the AF GAIN knob for desired audio volume and the SQL knob to set the squelch level, which mutes background noise when no signal is present.
Frequency Selection
The FT-818ND supports Dual VFOs (A/B) for quick switching between two frequencies. Use the main DIAL knob to tune frequencies. Press the VFO/MEM button to switch between VFO mode and Memory mode. The transceiver covers a wide range of frequencies for both reception and transmission across HF, VHF, and UHF bands.
Mode Selection
Press the MODE button to cycle through available operating modes: SSB (USB/LSB), CW, FM, and AM. Select the appropriate mode for the signal you wish to receive or transmit.
Memory Channels
The transceiver has 208 memory channels organized into 10 memory groups. To store a frequency, tune to the desired frequency and mode, then follow the specific memory store procedure outlined in the full manual. To recall a memory channel, switch to Memory mode and use the DIAL knob or memory channel buttons to select the desired channel.
Advanced Functions
- IF Shift: Adjusts the intermediate frequency to reduce interference from adjacent signals.
- Clarifier “R.I.T”: Receiver Incremental Tuning allows fine-tuning of the receive frequency without changing the transmit frequency.
- IF Noise Blanker: Reduces pulse-type noise, such as ignition noise.
- IPO (Intercept Point Optimization): Improves receiver performance by bypassing the RF amplifier on strong signals.
- VOX: Voice Operated Transmit allows hands-free operation.
- Built-in Electronic Keyer: For CW (Morse Code) operation.
- Automatic Repeater Shift (ARS): Automatically applies the correct repeater shift for FM operation.
- CTCSS Encoder/Decoders: For selective calling and access to repeaters requiring tone squelch.
Maintenance
Cleaning
Regularly clean the exterior of the transceiver with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth with mild soap can be used, followed by a dry cloth. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents, as they can damage the finish and internal components.
Battery Care
To maximize the lifespan of the Ni-MH battery pack (SBR-32MH), avoid overcharging or completely discharging it. Store the battery in a cool, dry place when not in use for extended periods. If the transceiver will not be used for a long time, remove the battery pack.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your FT-818ND, consider the following common troubleshooting steps:
- No Power: Check battery charge, external power supply connection, and power cable integrity.
- No Reception: Verify antenna connection, ensure correct frequency and mode are selected, and check squelch level.
- No Transmission: Confirm antenna connection, check SWR, ensure microphone is properly connected, and verify PTT operation.
- Poor Audio: Adjust AF GAIN, check speaker connection, and ensure no interference is present.
For persistent issues, refer to the detailed troubleshooting section in the complete user manual or contact Yaesu customer support.
