5. Operating Instructions
This section details the steps for taking accurate sound level measurements using the Victor 824.
5.1 Basic Measurement
- Turn on the meter by pressing the green power button.
- Hold the meter with the microphone pointed towards the sound source. Ensure no obstructions are blocking the microphone.
- The current sound level will be displayed on the LCD screen in decibels (dB).

5.2 Frequency Weighting (A/C)
The meter supports two frequency weighting characteristics: A and C.
- A-Weighting (dBA): Mimics the human ear's response to sound. Commonly used for environmental noise measurements and occupational health and safety.
- C-Weighting (dBC): Provides a flatter response, measuring the true sound pressure level across a wider frequency range. Useful for analyzing low-frequency noise or peak sound levels.
Press the 'A/C' button to toggle between A-weighting and C-weighting. The selected weighting will be indicated on the display.
5.3 Time Weighting (FAST/SLOW)
The meter offers two time weighting settings:
- FAST: Responds quickly to changes in sound level (125ms time constant). Suitable for measuring fluctuating noise or identifying peak levels.
- SLOW: Provides a more averaged reading (1 second time constant). Ideal for measuring steady noise levels.
Press the 'FAST/SLOW' button to switch between these settings. The active setting will be shown on the display.
5.4 MAX Reading Function
To capture the maximum sound level recorded during a measurement session, press the 'MAX' button. The display will hold the highest decibel reading until the function is deactivated or the meter is reset. Press 'MAX' again to exit this mode.
5.5 AC/DC Output
The Victor 824 features AC/DC output ports for connecting to external devices such as frequency analyzers, graphic recorders, or data loggers. These ports are located on the side of the unit.

6. Maintenance
Proper maintenance ensures the longevity and accuracy of your Victor 824 Sound Level Meter.
6.1 Cleaning
Wipe the device with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners, solvents, or immerse the device in water. Keep the microphone clean and free from dust or debris.
6.2 Storage
When not in use for extended periods, remove the batteries to prevent leakage. Store the meter in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and high humidity. The provided carrying case is ideal for protection.

6.3 Calibration
For optimal accuracy, it is recommended to recalibrate the Victor 824 Sound Level Meter annually. Calibration should be performed using a 94dB 1KHz standard sound source. Refer to the calibration procedure in the included manual or contact a certified calibration service.
7. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your Victor 824, refer to the following common problems and solutions:
- No Power:
- Check if batteries are installed correctly with proper polarity.
- Replace old or depleted batteries with new ones.
- Ensure the battery compartment cover is securely closed.
- Inaccurate Readings:
- Ensure the microphone is not obstructed and is pointed correctly at the sound source.
- Verify the selected frequency (A/C) and time (FAST/SLOW) weighting settings are appropriate for your measurement.
- Consider if the device requires recalibration (recommended annually).
- 'OVER' or 'UNDER' Indication:
- This indicates the sound level is outside the meter's current measuring range. Adjust the measuring level range if possible, or move to an environment within the meter's capabilities.
- Display Not Working:
- Check battery power.
- If the issue persists after checking batteries, contact customer support.
