Key Features

Setup

1. Unpacking and Inspection

Carefully remove the pipette from its packaging. Inspect the pipette for any visible damage that may have occurred during shipping. Ensure all components are present as per the packing list.

2. Attaching a Pipette Tip

  1. Select the appropriate Gilson PIPETMAN Diamond Tip for the volume range of your pipette (1-10 mL).
  2. Gently push the pipette shaft into the tip with a slight twisting motion until a secure seal is formed. Do not force the tip, as this can damage the pipette or lead to inaccurate results.
  3. Verify that the tip is seated firmly and straight on the shaft.

3. Setting the Volume

Adjust the desired volume using the volume adjustment knob located at the top of the pipette. Turn the knob clockwise to decrease the volume and counter-clockwise to increase it. Ensure the volume display clearly shows the intended volume. For optimal accuracy, always approach the desired volume from a higher setting by turning the knob downwards.

Operating Instructions

1. Aspiration (Drawing Liquid)

  1. Press the push-button down to the first stop (aspiration stop).
  2. Immerse the pipette tip into the liquid to be aspirated. The immersion depth should be minimal, typically 1-2 mm for volumes up to 100 µL, and 2-3 mm for larger volumes.
  3. Slowly release the push-button to allow the liquid to be drawn into the tip. Ensure a smooth, controlled release to prevent air bubbles or splashing.
  4. Wait for 1-2 seconds to ensure the full volume has been aspirated, especially for viscous liquids.
  5. Withdraw the tip from the liquid, touching it against the edge of the container to remove any excess droplets.

2. Dispensing (Ejecting Liquid)

  1. Place the pipette tip against the inner wall of the receiving vessel at a slight angle.
  2. Press the push-button down smoothly to the first stop to dispense the liquid.
  3. Continue pressing the push-button down to the second stop (blow-out stop) to expel any remaining liquid from the tip. This ensures complete delivery of the set volume.
  4. While holding the push-button at the second stop, withdraw the pipette from the vessel.

3. Tip Ejection

After dispensing, press the tip ejector button firmly to discard the used tip into an appropriate waste container. Avoid touching the used tip with your hands.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning

2. Calibration

The PIPETMAN G is a precision instrument and should be calibrated regularly to ensure continued accuracy. Gilson recommends annual calibration by an authorized service center or a qualified laboratory. Do not attempt to recalibrate the pipette yourself unless you are trained and have the necessary equipment.

3. Storage

Store the pipette vertically in a pipette stand when not in use to prevent contamination and maintain calibration. Avoid storing in direct sunlight or extreme temperatures.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Inaccurate pipetting / Volume variationImproper tip seating, damaged tip, liquid leakage, incorrect pipetting technique, pipette out of calibration.Ensure tip is securely attached. Check tip for damage. Verify proper pipetting technique (smooth aspiration/dispensing). Send for calibration if necessary.
Liquid dripping from tipLoose tip, damaged tip, worn piston seal, rapid aspiration/dispensing.Re-seat or replace tip. Check for visible damage to the shaft or seal. Use slower, controlled movements. Contact Gilson service if problem persists.
Difficulty in volume adjustmentInternal mechanism issue, debris.Do not force the knob. Contact Gilson service for inspection and repair.
