1. Introduction

This manual provides essential instructions for the safe and efficient use, setup, operation, and maintenance of your Stihl AK20 Lithium-Ion Battery. Please read this manual thoroughly before using the battery and keep it for future reference. The Stihl AK20 is a compact 36V, 118Wh lithium-ion battery designed for the Stihl Compact cordless power system, featuring an LED charge level indicator.

2. Safety Information

Always observe the following safety precautions to prevent injury and damage to the battery or connected equipment.

  • Read all instructions: Before using the battery, read all instructions and cautionary markings on the battery, the charger, and the product using the battery.
  • Charging: Only charge the battery with Stihl-approved chargers (AL 101, AL 100, AL 300, AL 500). Using an incompatible charger may result in fire, electric shock, or injury.
  • Avoid short circuits: Do not short-circuit the battery terminals. This can cause severe burns or fire.
  • Temperature: Do not store or use the battery in temperatures exceeding 40°C (104°F) or below -10°C (14°F). Extreme temperatures can damage the battery and pose a fire risk.
  • Water exposure: Do not expose the battery to water or rain. If the battery becomes wet, do not use it.
  • Damage: Do not use a damaged or modified battery. Damaged batteries may exhibit unpredictable behavior resulting in fire, explosion, or risk of injury.
  • Disposal: Dispose of batteries responsibly according to local regulations. Do not dispose of batteries in fire.
  • Children: Keep batteries out of reach of children.

3. Setup

3.1 Unpacking

Carefully remove the Stihl AK20 Lithium-Ion Battery from its packaging. Inspect the battery for any signs of damage. If any damage is observed, do not use the battery and contact your dealer.

3.2 Initial Charging

Before first use, fully charge the AK20 battery. Connect the battery to a compatible Stihl charger (AL 101, AL 100, AL 300, or AL 500). The charger's indicator lights will show the charging status. Refer to your charger's manual for specific charging instructions.

3.3 Inserting the Battery into a Tool

Align the battery with the battery compartment of your compatible Stihl cordless power tool. Push the battery firmly into the compartment until it clicks into place. Ensure the battery is securely seated before operating the tool.

4. Operating the Battery

4.1 Checking Charge Level

The Stihl AK20 battery features an LED charge level indicator. Press the button next to the LEDs to display the current charge status. The number of illuminated LEDs indicates the remaining charge:

  • 4 LEDs: Full charge
  • 3 LEDs: Approximately 75% charge
  • 2 LEDs: Approximately 50% charge
  • 1 LED: Low charge, recharge soon
  • Flashing LED: Battery is critically low or has an error.

4.2 Using with Compatible Tools

Once inserted and fully charged, the AK20 battery is ready to power your compatible Stihl cordless tools. The battery life will vary depending on the specific tool and the intensity of use. Always refer to your tool's instruction manual for optimal usage guidelines.

5. Maintenance

5.1 Charging Procedures

Always charge the battery in a well-ventilated area, away from flammable materials. Do not leave the battery on the charger indefinitely after it is fully charged. Disconnect the battery from the charger once charging is complete to prolong battery life.

5.2 Storage

For optimal battery longevity, store the AK20 battery in a cool, dry place, ideally between 10°C and 20°C (50°F and 68°F). Store the battery with a partial charge (around 50-75%) if it will not be used for an extended period. Avoid storing fully discharged or fully charged batteries for long durations.

5.3 Cleaning

Keep the battery terminals clean and free from dirt or debris. Use a dry, soft cloth to wipe the battery. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners. Ensure no moisture enters the battery housing.

6. Troubleshooting
