2.2 Battery Overview
1 Battery
The battery supplies energy to the battery-powered product.
2 LED
The LEDs indicate the battery charge status and faults.
3 Button
The button activates the LEDs on the battery. It activates and deactivates the Bluetooth® radio interface (if available).
3 Symbols
Symbols on the battery indicate the following:
- 1 LED lights red: Battery is too hot or too cold.
- 4 LEDs flash red: Fault in the battery.
- Battery charging with STIHL charger: Only use approved STIHL chargers.
- Bluetooth®: Battery has a Bluetooth® radio interface and can be connected to the STIHL connected App.
- Energy content: Indicates the battery's energy content according to the battery manufacturer's specifications. Actual usable energy content may be lower.
- Do not dispose of with household waste.
4 Safety Precautions
4.1 Warning Symbols
- !Observe safety instructions and measures.
- Read, understand, and save the operating manual.
- Protect battery from heat and open flames.
- Do not immerse battery in liquids.
- Li-Ion: Indicates Lithium-ion technology.
4.2 General Instructions
- Remove the battery during work breaks, transport, storage, maintenance, or repair.
- Ensure the user meets the following requirements:
- Is rested.
- Is physically, sensorially, and mentally capable of operating the battery and working with it. If the user's physical, sensory, or mental capabilities are limited, they may only work under supervision or according to instructions from a responsible person.
- Can recognize and assess the hazards associated with the battery.
- Is of legal age or is undergoing practical training under supervision according to national regulations.
- Has been instructed by a STIHL dealer or other qualified person before first use.
- Is not under the influence of alcohol, medication, or drugs.
4.3 Intended Use
STIHL AP batteries supply energy to STIHL battery-powered products or battery-powered products approved for STIHL AP batteries from other manufacturers.
The battery can be used in the rain.
The battery is charged with STIHL AL 101, AL 301, AL 301-4, or AL 501 chargers.
Batteries with Bluetooth® allow personalization and transfer of battery information via Bluetooth® with the STIHL connected app.
- VARNING: Unapproved products and chargers can cause fires or explosions, leading to severe injury or death and property damage. Only use STIHL AP batteries with STIHL battery-powered products or products approved for STIHL AP batteries from other manufacturers. Charge the battery only with STIHL AL 101, AL 301, AL 301-4, or AL 501 chargers.
- Improper use can lead to severe injury or death and property damage. Use the battery as described in these safety instructions, the battery-powered product's operating manual, the STIHL connected App, and at www.connect.stihl.com.
4.4 User Requirements
- VARNING: Untrained users cannot recognize and assess the hazards of the battery, which can lead to severe injury or death of the user or others. Read, understand, and save the operating manual.
- If handing over the battery to others, include the user information.
- If in doubt, consult a STIHL dealer.
4.5 Work Area and Surroundings
- VARNING: Unauthorized persons, children, and animals cannot recognize and assess the hazards of the battery, which can lead to severe injury of unauthorized persons, children, and animals. Keep unauthorized persons, children, and animals away. Do not leave the battery unattended. Ensure children cannot play with the battery.
- The battery is not protected against all environmental influences. Exposure to certain environmental influences can cause the battery to ignite, explode, or be severely damaged, leading to severe injury and property damage. Protect the battery from heat and open flames. Do not throw the battery into fire. Do not charge, use, or store the battery outside the specified temperature limits (see section 15.2). Do not immerse the battery in liquids.
- Keep the battery away from small metal parts. Do not expose the battery to high pressure. Do not expose the battery to microwaves. Protect the battery from chemicals and salts.
4.6 Safe Condition
The battery is in a safe condition if the following conditions are met:
- The battery is undamaged.
- The battery is clean and dry.
- The battery functions and has not been modified.
- VARNING: A battery in an unsafe condition can no longer function safely, potentially causing severe injury. Work with an undamaged and functional battery. Do not charge a damaged or defective battery. If the battery is dirty: Clean the battery. If the battery is wet or damp: Allow the battery to dry (see section 15.3). Do not make any modifications to the battery. Do not insert objects into the battery openings. Do not connect the electrical contacts of the battery to metal objects or short-circuit them. Do not open the battery. Replace worn or damaged information labels.
- Liquid can leak from a damaged battery. Contact with skin or eyes can cause irritation. Avoid contact with the liquid. In case of skin contact: Wash affected skin areas with plenty of soap and water. In case of eye contact: Rinse eyes thoroughly with water for at least 15 minutes and seek medical attention.
- A damaged or defective battery may emit unusual odors, smoke, or catch fire, leading to severe injury, death, and property damage. If the battery emits unusual odors or smoke: Do not use the battery and keep it at a safe distance from flammable materials. If the battery is on fire: Attempt to extinguish the battery with a fire extinguisher or water.
5 Charging the Battery and LEDs
5.1 Charging the Battery
Charging time depends on various factors, such as battery temperature and ambient temperature. For optimal performance, observe the recommended temperature ranges (see section 15.3). Actual charging time may vary.
Charging times are available at www.stihl.com/charging-times.
Charge the battery as described in the operating manual for STIHL AL 101, 301, 301-4, 501 chargers.
5.2 Displaying Charge Status
Press the button (1). The LEDs light up green for approximately 5 seconds and display the charge status.
If the right LED flashes green: Charge the battery.
5.3 LEDs on the Battery
The LEDs can indicate the battery charge status or faults. The LEDs can light up or flash green or red.
If the LEDs light up or flash green: Charge status is displayed.
If the LEDs light up or flash red: Eliminate faults (see section 14). There is a fault in the battery-powered product or the battery.
6 Bluetooth® Radio Interface
6.1 Activating the Bluetooth® Radio Interface
If the battery has a Bluetooth® radio interface: Press and hold the button until the "BLUETOOTH®" indicator light next to the symbol lights up blue for approximately 3 seconds. The Bluetooth® radio interface on the battery is activated.
6.2 Deactivating the Bluetooth® Radio Interface
If the battery has a Bluetooth® radio interface: Press and hold the button until the "BLUETOOTH®" indicator light next to the symbol flashes blue six times. The Bluetooth® radio interface on the battery is deactivated.
6.3 Connecting the Battery via Bluetooth® to the STIHL connected App
- Activate the Bluetooth® radio interface on your mobile device.
- Activate the Bluetooth® radio interface on the battery (see section 6.1).
- Download the STIHL connected App from the App Store onto your mobile device and create an account.
- Open the STIHL connected App and log in.
- Add the battery to the STIHL connected App and follow the on-screen instructions.
Contact and further information can be found at https://support.stihl.com or in the STIHL connected app. The STIHL connected app is available depending on the market.
6.4 Resetting Battery Bluetooth® Settings (AP 200.0 S, 300 S, 300.0 S, 500.0 S only)
Resetting the battery's factory settings will erase all user-specific data.
- Press the button 4 times quickly, holding it down the 4th time until the "BLUETOOTH®" LED next to the symbol flashes blue.
- Release the button immediately.
- Connect the battery to the STIHL connected app and check if all user-specific data has been erased.
7 Inserting and Removing the Battery
7.1 Inserting the Battery
Push the battery (1) into the battery compartment (2) until it locks in place. The battery (1) is secured with an audible click and is locked.
7.2 Removing the Battery
Press the locking lever (1). The battery (2) is unlocked and can be removed.
8 Checking the Battery
8.1 Checking the Battery
Press the button on the battery. The LEDs light up or flash. If the LEDs do not light up or flash: Do not use the battery and contact a STIHL dealer. There is a fault in the battery.
9 After Finishing Work
9.1 After Finishing Work
- Switch off the battery-powered product and remove the battery.
- If the battery is wet or damp: Allow the battery to dry (see section 15.3).
- Clean the battery.
10 Transport
10.1 Transporting the Battery
- Switch off the battery-powered product and remove the battery.
- Ensure the battery is transported safely.
- Pack the battery so it cannot move in the packaging.
- Secure the packaging so it cannot move.
The battery is subject to dangerous goods transport regulations. It is classified as UN 3480 (lithium-ion batteries) and has been tested according to the UN Manual of Tests and Criteria, Part III, Subsection 38.3. Transport regulations are available at www.stihl.com/safety-data-sheets.
11 Storage
11.1 Storing the Battery
STIHL recommends storing the battery at a charge level of 40% to 60% (2 green LEDs lit).
- Store the battery so that the following conditions are met:
- The battery is out of reach of children.
- The battery is clean and dry.
- The battery is in a closed room.
- The battery is disconnected from the battery-powered product.
- If storing the battery in the charger: Unplug the charger and store the battery at a charge level between 40% and 60% (2 green LEDs lit).
- The battery is not stored outside the specified temperature limits (see section 15.2).
- CAUTION: If the battery is not stored as described in this operating manual, it may deep-discharge and be severely damaged. Charge the battery before storage. STIHL recommends storing the battery at a charge level between 40% and 60% (2 green LEDs lit). Store the battery separately from the battery-powered product.
12 Cleaning
12.1 Cleaning the Battery
Clean the battery with a damp cloth.
13 Maintenance and Repair
13.1 Maintenance and Repair of the Battery
The battery does not require maintenance, and the user cannot repair it. If the battery is defective or damaged: Replace the battery.
14 Troubleshooting

15.2 Temperature Limits
- VARNING: The battery is not protected against all environmental influences. Exposure to certain environmental influences can cause the battery to ignite or explode, leading to severe injury and property damage. Do not charge the battery at temperatures below -20 °C or above +50 °C. Do not use the battery at temperatures below -20 °C or above +50 °C. Do not store the battery at temperatures below -20 °C or above +70 °C.
15.3 Recommended Temperature Ranges
For optimal battery performance, observe the following temperature ranges:
- Charging: +5 °C to +40 °C
- Use: -10 °C to +40 °C
- Storage: -20 °C to +50 °C
If the battery is charged, used, or stored outside the recommended temperature ranges, performance may be reduced.
If the battery is wet or damp, allow it to dry for at least 48 hours at temperatures between +15 °C and +50 °C and humidity below 70%. Higher humidity may extend drying time.

REACH refers to the EU regulation for registration, evaluation, and authorization of chemicals. Information for compliance with REACH regulation is available at www.stihl.com/reach.
16 Disposal
16.1 Battery Disposal
Information on disposal is available from your local administration or STIHL dealer. Improper disposal can harm health and the environment.
- Dispose of STIHL products, including packaging, at an appropriate collection point for recycling in accordance with local regulations.
- Do not dispose of with household waste.
