The large, ergonomic main locking knob controls the movement of the ball.

  • Rotate clockwise to lock the ball, securing the camera's position.
  • Rotate counter-clockwise to loosen the ball, allowing for free movement and repositioning of the camera.

3.2 Friction Control Knob

Figure 5: Side view highlighting the friction control knob for fine-tuning ball tension.

The smaller friction control knob allows you to adjust the tension of the ball movement when the main locking knob is loosened. This prevents sudden drops of your camera and allows for smoother, more controlled adjustments.

  • Rotate clockwise to increase friction (tighter movement).
  • Rotate counter-clockwise to decrease friction (looser movement).

3.3 Panning Knob

The panning knob, located at the base of the ball head, controls the 360° rotation of the head.

  • Loosen this knob to rotate the camera horizontally without affecting the ball's tilt.
  • Tighten to lock the panning movement.

3.4 Using the Bubble Levels

The Alta BH-250 includes two bubble levels to assist in achieving precise horizontal and vertical alignment for your shots. Adjust the tripod legs and/or the ball head's position until the bubbles are centered within their indicators.

4. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Wipe the ball head with a soft, dry cloth after each use to remove dust and debris. For stubborn dirt, a slightly damp cloth can be used, followed by immediate drying. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Lubrication: The oxidization anodized surface of the ball is designed for smooth operation and does not require additional lubrication. Applying lubricants may attract dust and impair performance.
  • Storage: Store the ball head in a clean, dry environment away from extreme temperatures and humidity.
  • Inspection: Periodically check all knobs and screws to ensure they are functioning correctly and are not loose.
