2. Setup and Initial Use
2.1 Power Source
The Casio HR-170RC can be powered in two ways:
- AC Adapter: For continuous use, connect the calculator to a standard electrical outlet using the provided AC adapter.
- Batteries: For portable use, insert four (4) AAA batteries into the battery compartment located on the underside of the calculator. Ensure correct polarity (+/-) as indicated. The calculator comes with batteries included.
2.2 Paper Roll Installation
- Open the paper roll cover.
- Place a new paper roll into the compartment, ensuring the paper feeds from the bottom of the roll.
- Feed the leading edge of the paper through the printer slot until it emerges from the top.
- Close the paper roll cover. Use the FEED button to advance the paper if needed.
2.3 Ink Roller Installation
- Ensure the calculator is turned off.
- Gently remove the old ink roller (if present) by lifting it out.
- Unpack the new ink roller. Avoid touching the inked parts.
- Insert the new ink roller into its designated slot, pressing down gently until it clicks into place.

3. Operating Instructions
3.1 Basic Calculations
- Addition (+), Subtraction (-), Multiplication (*), Division (/): Enter numbers and operators as you would on a standard calculator. Press the equals (=) key to display the result and print the calculation.
- Grand Total (GT): Press this key to recall the grand total of all previous calculations.
- Clear Entry (CE): Clears the last entered number.
- All Clear (AC): Clears all entries and calculations.
3.2 Tax Calculation
To use the tax function, first set the tax rate:
- Press the SET button.
- Enter the tax rate (e.g., 5 for 5%).
- Press the TAX+ or TAX- button to save the rate.
Once the rate is set:
- TAX+: Adds the set tax rate to the displayed number.
- TAX-: Subtracts the set tax rate from the displayed number.
3.3 Cost/Sell/Margin Calculations
These functions simplify profit calculations:
- COST: Calculates the cost based on sell price and margin.
- SELL: Calculates the sell price based on cost and margin.
- MAR: Calculates the margin based on cost and sell price.
Enter two of the three values (Cost, Sell, Margin) and press the key for the unknown value to calculate it.
3.4 Reprint & Check Function
The HR-170RC allows you to review and reprint your calculation history:
- CHECK: Press this button to scroll through the last 150 calculation steps. Use the arrow keys (▲/▼) to navigate.
- CORRECT: While in CHECK mode, if you find an error, enter the correct number and press CORRECT to replace the incorrect step.
- REPRINT: After reviewing or correcting, press REPRINT to print the entire calculation history.
4. Maintenance
4.1 Replacing the Paper Roll
When the paper roll runs low or the print becomes faint, replace it following the steps in Section 2.2.
4.2 Replacing the Ink Roller
If the print quality deteriorates (e.g., faded or incomplete characters), the ink roller may need replacement. Follow the steps in Section 2.3.
4.3 Cleaning
To maintain optimal performance and appearance:
- Wipe the calculator's exterior with a soft, dry cloth.
- For stubborn dirt, slightly dampen the cloth with water or a mild, non-abrasive cleaner.
- Do not use strong solvents or abrasive cleaners, as they may damage the surface.
- Avoid getting liquids inside the calculator, especially near the display or printer mechanism.
