Verbatim Store 'n' Save USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive User Manual

Model: 47685 | Brand: Verbatim

1. Introduction

The Verbatim Store 'n' Save USB 3.0 Desktop Hard Drive is a high-performance external storage solution designed for reliable data backup and transfer. It features a high-speed USB 3.0 interface, offering significantly faster data transfer rates compared to USB 2.0. This drive is ideal for expanding your computer's storage capacity, backing up important files, and transferring large media libraries.

The Store 'n' Save can be positioned either flat or on its side to best suit your desk space. Upon connecting and accessing the drive, a Verbatim welcome screen may appear, providing convenient access to included software, user manuals, support information, and the drive's directory. USB 3.0 is fully backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports.

Drives with capacities up to 2TB are pre-formatted with FAT32 for immediate compatibility with both Windows and Mac OS X. For drives larger than 2TB, such as this 4TB model, they are formatted with NTFS, making them compatible with Windows systems. For Mac OS X compatibility, these larger drives must be reformatted to HFS+. The Verbatim VHD formatter, included on the drive, can assist with this reformatting process.

Included with the drive is Nero backup software to help manage your backups. Additionally, the Verbatim hard drive features Green Button energy-saving software. This software intelligently spins down the hard drive when it is not actively in use, enhancing energy efficiency and reducing power consumption. Users can configure three sleep settings: automatic spin-down after 10 minutes, or in 10-minute increments up to 120 minutes. The drive can also be immediately spun down by double-clicking the Green Button icon on your desktop. An option to 'Never suspend the drive' is also available for continuous operation.

4.2 Initializing and Formatting (if necessary)

For Windows users, the drive is pre-formatted with NTFS and should be ready for immediate use. For Mac OS X users, if the drive is 2TB or less, it is FAT32 formatted and ready. For drives larger than 2TB (like this 4TB model), reformatting to HFS+ is recommended for optimal Mac compatibility.

For Mac OS X Reformatting:

  1. Connect the drive to your Mac.
  2. Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility).
  3. Select the Verbatim drive from the sidebar.
  4. Click the Erase tab.
  5. Choose a format (e.g., "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)" for HFS+).
  6. Click Erase to begin the formatting process. Warning: This will erase all data on the drive.
  7. Alternatively, use the Verbatim VHD formatter software included on the drive for HFS+ formatting.

5. Operating Instructions

  • Set Sleep Timer: Choose from predefined sleep intervals (e.g., 10 minutes, 20 minutes, up to 120 minutes) after which the drive will spin down due to inactivity.
  • Manual Spin Down: Double-click the Green Button icon on your desktop to immediately spin down the drive.
