Model: MP1C | Brand: Super Antenna

1. Introduction

The Super Antenna MP1C is a highly regarded portable ham radio antenna designed for transmitting and receiving across HF and VHF bands. It is recognized for its portability and performance, making it suitable for various applications from field deployments to temporary base installations.

This manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of your MP1C antenna to ensure optimal performance and longevity.

2. Safety Information

WARNING: Do not use this antenna during lightning storms. Keep the antenna and associated cables away from electrical wires and power lines to prevent electric shock. Always ensure a safe operating environment.

3. Package Contents

Upon unpacking, please verify that all components listed below are present in your Super Antenna MP1C package:

  • 1 x Super Antenna Model MP1C Portable Antenna (main assembly)
  • 1 x SuperSlider (movable frequency tuning sleeve)
  • 1 x Telescopic Whip
  • 2 x Extension Rods
  • 1 x Coupling Nut
  • 2 x Instruction Sheets (this manual and supplementary guides)

Figure 4.1: Exploded view of the Super Antenna MP1C, highlighting its key components such as the Top Whip Antenna Element, Telescopic Whip, SuperSlider, SuperCoil, and Extension Rods. It also shows the FG1 Frequency Guide and the standard 3/8"-24 fittings.

  • Top Whip Antenna Element: The uppermost section of the antenna, crucial for signal reception and transmission.
  • Telescopic Whip: An adjustable element that extends for full size operation and collapses for compact storage.
  • SuperSlider™: A self-locking, movable frequency tuning sleeve with a rubberized grip. It allows manual adjustment to your desired frequency for optimal SWR.
  • SuperCoil: A high-Q precision tuning coil rated at 500 Watts, designed to maximize power efficiency.
  • Extension Rods: Used to increase the antenna's height for improved performance or can be removed for a lower profile setup.
  • Standard 3/8"-24 Fittings: All modules feature these strong and compatible fittings, allowing attachment to most standard ham and CB mounts.
  • FG1 Frequency Guide SWR Ruler: A tool included to assist in setting the HF frequency calibration.

5. Setup and Assembly

Follow these steps to assemble your Super Antenna MP1C:

  1. Attach the Base: Secure the antenna's base (which has the 3/8"-24 male fitting) to a compatible mount. Recommended mounts include SuperAntenna models UM2, UM3, UM3SP, TM1, TM4, or any standard 3/8"-24 ham/CB mount. Ensure the mount is stable and properly grounded if required for your setup.
  2. Connect Extension Rods: If desired, screw the two extension rods into the base of the antenna using the coupling nut. These rods provide additional height.
  3. Install the SuperCoil and SuperSlider: The SuperCoil is integrated with the SuperSlider. Ensure it is securely attached to the extension rods or directly to the base if no extension rods are used.
  4. Attach the Telescopic Whip: Screw the telescopic whip onto the top of the SuperSlider/SuperCoil assembly.
  5. Extend the Whip: Gently extend the telescopic whip to its full length or desired operating length.
  6. Connect Coaxial Cable: Attach your coaxial cable (sold separately) to the appropriate connector on your mount or antenna base.

6. Operating Instructions

The Super Antenna MP1C is designed for ease of tuning across various bands. Follow these steps for operation:

  1. Select Your Frequency Band: Determine the HF or VHF band you wish to operate on.
  2. Adjust the SuperSlider: Manually slide the SuperSlider coil up or down to the desired frequency setting. Use the included FG1 Frequency Guide SWR Ruler as a reference for initial settings. The rubberized grip on the SuperSlider provides better control during adjustment.
  3. Tune for Minimum SWR: Connect an SWR meter or antenna analyzer to your radio system. Transmit a low power signal (if using an SWR meter) or use the analyzer to fine-tune the SuperSlider position for the lowest possible SWR (Standing Wave Ratio) on your chosen frequency. A low SWR indicates efficient power transfer from your radio to the antenna.
  4. Optimize Performance: For best results, especially on different bands, slight adjustments to the telescopic whip length may also be necessary in conjunction with the SuperSlider.
  5. Counterpoise/Radial Considerations: For optimal performance, especially on HF bands, the antenna requires a proper counterpoise or radial system. Super Antenna offers various radial sets (e.g., MR4010, MR642, MR1710, MR4020, MR8060, MR8075, MR6060) that can significantly improve efficiency.

The MP1C is highly versatile for portable operations, including Emcomm deployments, Dxpeditions, temporary base installations, manpack, and pedestrian mobile (P/M) work.

7. Maintenance and Care

To ensure the longevity and continued performance of your Super Antenna MP1C, follow these maintenance guidelines:

  • Cleaning: Wipe down the antenna components with a clean, dry cloth after use, especially if exposed to dirt, dust, or moisture. Avoid abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Inspection: Periodically inspect all connections, threads, and the telescopic whip for any signs of wear, corrosion, or damage. Ensure the coupling nut and other threaded connections are secure.
  • Storage: When not in use, collapse the antenna to its compact size and store it in a dry, clean environment, ideally in its original packaging or a protective bag. This prevents damage to the telescopic whip and other delicate components.
  • Material Care: The antenna is constructed from durable materials including aluminum, brass, stainless steel, beryllium, copper, and polymers. While robust, proper care will prevent premature wear.

8. Troubleshooting

Common Issues and Solutions
ProblemPossible CauseSolution
High SWR / Difficulty Tuning
  • Incorrect SuperSlider position.
  • Improper or missing counterpoise/radials.
  • Damaged coaxial cable or connectors.
  • Antenna not fully extended or obstructed.
  • Carefully adjust the SuperSlider using the FG1 guide and an SWR meter/analyzer.
  • Ensure proper counterpoise or radial system is connected and deployed.
  • Check all cable connections and inspect for damage.
  • Ensure the telescopic whip is fully extended and there are no nearby metallic obstructions.
Missing ComponentsPackage contents not fully checked upon receipt.Refer to the "Package Contents" section (Section 3) and contact Super Antenna customer support immediately if any parts are missing.
Poor Reception/Transmission
  • Antenna not tuned correctly.
  • Environmental factors (e.g., local noise, obstructions).
  • Radio or other equipment issues.
  • Re-tune the antenna for minimum SWR.
  • Relocate the antenna to a clearer area if possible.
  • Verify your radio and other equipment are functioning correctly.
