Setup
1. Powering the Device
The Zoom H4n Pro can be powered by two AAA batteries (included) or via USB 2.0 high-speed connection. For optimal performance and to enable phantom power, it is recommended to use the included batteries or an external power supply (DC 5V 1A).
- Battery Installation: Open the battery compartment on the back of the unit (refer to Figure 4). Insert two AAA batteries, ensuring correct polarity.
- USB Power: Connect the H4n Pro to a computer or a USB power adapter using a USB cable. Note that phantom power and plug-in power cannot be set during recording and playback when using USB bus power.
2. Inserting an SD/SDHC Card
The H4n Pro records directly to SD/SDHC cards up to 32 GB. Locate the SD card slot on the side of the device (refer to Figure 2). Insert the card until it clicks into place. Ensure the card is formatted within the device before first use to prevent data corruption.
3. Connecting Microphones/Instruments
- Built-in X/Y Microphones: The device features integrated X/Y stereo microphones, adjustable between 90° and 120° for flexible stereo imaging.
- External Inputs: Two mic/line level inputs with XLR/TRS combo connectors are available at the bottom of the unit (refer to Figure 3). These inputs support +24V or +48V phantom power for condenser microphones.
- Stereo Mini Jack: A stereo 1/8" Mic In mini phone jack is provided for connecting external stereo microphones that require 2.5V plug-in power.
Operating Instructions
- Power On: Slide the POWER switch to the ON position.
- Select Mode: Use the MENU dial to navigate and select your desired recording mode (e.g., STEREO, 4CH, MTR).
- Adjust Input Level: Use the REC LEVEL +/- buttons on the side (refer to Figure 2) to adjust the input gain. Monitor the levels on the display to avoid clipping.
- Start Recording: Press the REC button once to enter record-ready mode. The REC indicator will flash. Press it again to begin recording.
- Stop Recording: Press the STOP button to stop recording.
2. Playback
- Select File: Use the FOLDER and FILE buttons to browse and select the desired audio file.
- Start Playback: Press the PLAY/PAUSE button.
- Adjust Playback Volume: Use the VOLUME +/- buttons (if available, or adjust output level via menu) to control the playback volume.
- Stop Playback: Press the STOP button.
3. Using as a USB Audio Interface
The H4n Pro can function as a 4-in/2-out USB Audio Interface. Connect the device to your computer using a USB cable. Select "Audio Interface" mode from the H4n Pro's menu. Install necessary drivers if prompted by your operating system (Windows Vista and newer, Mac OS X 10.6 and newer).
Maintenance
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the unit. Avoid using abrasive cleaners or solvents.
- Storage: Store the device in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures. Remove batteries if storing for extended periods to prevent leakage.
- SD Card Care: Regularly back up your recordings. Avoid removing the SD card while the device is powered on or actively recording/playing back to prevent data loss or card corruption.
- Firmware Updates: Check the Zoom website periodically for firmware updates to ensure optimal performance and access to new features.
