4. Setup

4.1. Battery Installation

The NSHL-468 Network Cable Tester requires one 9V battery for operation (battery not included). Refer to Figure 3.4 for the battery compartment location.

  1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the master unit.
  2. Slide the cover open.
  3. Connect a 9V battery to the battery clip inside the compartment, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Place the battery into the compartment and close the cover securely.

4.2. Powering On/Off

The tester features a three-position slide switch labeled "OFF ON S" on the master unit.

  • OFF: Powers the unit off.
  • ON: Activates normal testing speed.
  • S (Slow): Activates a slower testing speed, useful for detailed observation of LED sequences.

5. Operating Instructions

5.1. Testing RJ45 Cables (CAT5/CAT5e/CAT6)

  1. Ensure a 9V battery is installed in the master unit.
  2. Connect one end of the RJ45 cable to the RJ45 port on the master unit.
  3. Connect the other end of the RJ45 cable to the RJ45 port on the remote unit. If testing an installed cable, detach the remote unit and connect it to the far end of the cable.
  4. Slide the power switch to "ON" for normal speed testing or "S" for slow speed testing.
  5. Observe the LED indicators on both the master and remote units. The LEDs will light up sequentially from 1 to 8, then G (Ground).

5.2. Testing RJ11/RJ12 Cables

  1. Ensure a 9V battery is installed in the master unit.
  2. Connect one end of the RJ11/RJ12 cable to the RJ11 port on the master unit.
  3. Connect the other end of the RJ11/RJ12 cable to the RJ11 port on the remote unit.
  4. Slide the power switch to "ON" or "S".
  5. Observe the LED indicators. The LEDs will light up sequentially according to the cable's pinout.

6. Interpreting Test Results

The sequential lighting of the LEDs on both the master and remote units indicates the status of each wire. A healthy cable will show corresponding LEDs lighting up in the same order on both units (e.g., Master LED 1 lights up, then Remote LED 1 lights up, and so on).

Crossed WiresLEDs light up in one sequence (e.g., 1-2-3).LEDs light up in a different sequence (e.g., 1-3-2).Wires are connected to incorrect pins at one or both ends.

7. Maintenance

  • Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the exterior of the tester. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents.
  • Storage: Store the device in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
  • Battery: Remove the 9V battery if the tester will not be used for an extended period to prevent battery leakage and damage to the unit.
  • Handling: Handle the tester with care to avoid dropping or subjecting it to strong impacts, which could damage internal components.

8. Troubleshooting

Table 8.1: Common Issues and Solutions
ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Tester does not power on.No battery installed or battery is dead.Install a fresh 9V battery. Ensure correct polarity.
LEDs do not light up or are erratic.Poor cable connection or faulty cable.Ensure cables are fully inserted into the ports. Test with a known good cable.
Remote unit LEDs do not match master unit.Cable fault (open, short, crossed).Refer to Section 6, "Interpreting Test Results," to diagnose the specific cable fault. Replace or repair the cable as needed.
Tester seems to be stuck or unresponsive.Temporary software glitch or low battery.Turn the tester off, remove the battery, wait 30 seconds, reinsert the battery, and turn it back on. Replace battery if issue persists.
