Genuine Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) Part

1. Introduction

This manual provides essential information for the safe and efficient operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of your Briggs & Stratton 31R977-0029-G1 engine. This 500cc single-cylinder engine delivers 17.5 horsepower, featuring a premium pleated paper air filtration system, electric start with recoil backup, and a maintenance-free Magnetron electronic ignition. It includes a Dura-Bore cast iron cylinder sleeve for extended life, an installed muffler, a fuel pump, and a 9 amp charging system.

Please read this manual thoroughly before installing or operating the engine to ensure proper use and to prevent injury or damage.

2. Safety Information

Always prioritize safety when working with engines. Failure to follow safety instructions can result in serious injury or death.

  • Read the Manual: Understand all instructions and warnings before operation.
  • Ventilation: Operate the engine in a well-ventilated area to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
  • Fuel Handling: Handle fuel with extreme care. Fuel is highly flammable. Store in approved containers.
  • Hot Surfaces: The engine and muffler become very hot during operation and remain hot for a period afterward. Avoid contact to prevent burns.
  • Moving Parts: Keep hands, feet, and clothing away from moving parts.
  • Spark Plugs: Disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance to prevent accidental starting.
  • Eye Protection: Always wear appropriate eye protection.

WARNING: Read and follow operating instructions. Allow engine to cool at least 2 minutes before refueling. Exhaust gases contain carbon monoxide. Do NOT run in enclosed area. Muffler area temperature may exceed 150°F. Do not touch hot parts.

  1. Ensure the equipment is in a safe operating position.
  2. Set the throttle control to the 'FAST' position.
  3. If equipped, engage the choke for cold starts.
  4. Electric Start: Turn the ignition key to the 'START' position. Release the key once the engine starts.

4.3 Stopping the Engine

To stop the engine, move the throttle control to the 'STOP' or 'OFF' position. If the engine does not stop, turn the ignition key to 'OFF' or disconnect the spark plug wire.

5. Maintenance

Regular maintenance is essential for optimal performance and extended engine life. Always disconnect the spark plug wire before performing any maintenance.

5.1 Air Filter

This engine features a premium pleated paper air filtration system. Inspect and clean or replace the air filter regularly, especially in dusty conditions. A dirty air filter can reduce engine performance and increase wear.

5.2 Oil Changes

Change the engine oil at recommended intervals. The Dura-Bore cast iron cylinder sleeve provides enhanced durability, but clean oil is vital for all internal components. Refer to your equipment's manual for specific oil change schedules and oil type.

5.3 Spark Plug

Inspect and clean or replace the spark plug as needed. A fouled or worn spark plug can lead to starting difficulties and poor engine performance.

5.4 Fuel System

The engine is equipped with a fuel pump. Periodically check fuel lines and the fuel filter for cracks, leaks, or blockages. Replace components as necessary.

5.5 Charging System

This engine includes a 9 amp charging system. If you experience issues with battery charging, inspect the charging system components and connections.

5.6 General Cleaning

Keep the engine clean from debris, especially around the cooling fins and air intake areas, to prevent overheating.
