4. Setup
4.1. Battery Installation
The gauge requires 2 CR2 batteries. Ensure correct polarity when inserting the batteries into the compartment, typically located on the back or side of the digital unit.
4.2. Attaching the Base
The digital indicator unit attaches to the 4-inch 2-position base. The indicator can be mounted on the center or side of the base, providing flexibility for various measurement scenarios. Securely fasten the indicator to the base using the provided screw mechanism.
5. Operation
5.1. Power On/Off
Press the ON/OFF button to turn the gauge on or off. The gauge features a power-saving auto-off feature to conserve battery life.
5.2. Unit Conversion (Inch/MM/Fractions)
Press the inch/mm/F button to cycle through measurement units: inches (decimal), millimeters, and fractions of an inch. The current unit will be displayed on the LCD screen.
5.3. Zeroing the Gauge
To set a reference point, place the gauge on a flat, stable surface or the desired reference plane. Ensure the measuring probe is fully retracted or resting on the surface. Press the ZERO button. The display will show "0.000" (or "0.00" / "0" depending on the unit), indicating that the current position is set as zero.
5.4. Absolute (ABS) and Incremental Measurements
The gauge supports both absolute and incremental measurements. Press the ABS button to toggle between these modes. In absolute mode, measurements are taken relative to the initial zero point. In incremental mode, measurements are taken relative to the last zero set.
5.5. Using Extension Rods
For measuring deeper depths, the gauge includes six extension rods (1", 2", 3", 4", 5", 6"). To use an extension rod:
- Unscrew the existing feeler point from the probe.
- Screw the desired extension rod onto the probe.
- Attach a feeler point to the end of the extension rod.
- Re-zero the gauge on a known reference surface to ensure accuracy with the extended length.
5.6. Using Different Feeler Points
The kit includes four different feeler points to accommodate various measurement needs:
- Standard Point: General purpose depth measurement.
- Flat Point: Ideal for measuring flat surfaces or the bottom of wide grooves.
- Thin Point: Suitable for measuring narrow slots or small indentations.
- Sharp Point: For precise measurements in very small or pointed features.
To change a feeler point, simply unscrew the current point and screw on the desired one. Always re-zero the gauge after changing feeler points or extension rods.
5.7. Measuring in Tight Spaces (Offset Hole)
The 2-position base allows the digital indicator to be mounted in an offset hole. This feature is particularly useful when measuring depths in areas where the main body of the gauge would obstruct access, enabling measurements closer to an edge or within a confined space.
6. Maintenance
6.1. Cleaning
Wipe the gauge with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth after each use. For stubborn dirt, a cloth lightly dampened with isopropyl alcohol may be used. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners.
6.2. Storage
Store the depth gauge in its protective case in a dry, temperature-controlled environment. Avoid areas with high humidity, dust, or vibrations. Ensure the probe is retracted before storage to prevent damage.
6.3. Battery Replacement
When the display becomes dim or erratic, it is time to replace the batteries. The gauge uses 2 CR2 batteries. Open the battery compartment, remove the old batteries, and insert new ones, observing correct polarity. Dispose of old batteries responsibly.
