Setup

1. Physical Installation

The MTS800 SSD uses the M.2 form factor, which is designed for compact spaces. Before installation, ensure your device (laptop, ultrabook, or desktop motherboard) has a compatible M.2 slot (Type 2242, 2260, or 2280). The MTS800 is an 80mm module (Type 2280).

  1. Power Off: Completely power off your computer and disconnect all power sources.
  2. Access M.2 Slot: Open your computer case or access panel to locate the M.2 slot on your motherboard. Refer to your computer or motherboard manual for exact location and access instructions.
  3. Insert SSD: Gently insert the Transcend MTS800 SSD into the M.2 slot at a slight angle. The gold contacts on the SSD should align with the slot.
  4. Secure SSD: Once fully seated, push the SSD down and secure it with the small screw provided with your motherboard or computer.
  5. Close Case: Reassemble your computer.

2. Software Setup

After physical installation, you will need to prepare the SSD for use by your operating system.

  • BIOS/UEFI Configuration: Enter your system's BIOS/UEFI settings upon startup. Ensure the M.2 slot is enabled and configured correctly (e.g., SATA mode set to AHCI for optimal SSD performance). You may also need to adjust the boot order if you intend to install an operating system on the SSD.
  • Operating System Installation:
    • Clean Install: For best performance, a clean installation of your operating system (Windows XP/Vista/7/8 or Linux Kernel 2.6.31 or later) is recommended directly onto the MTS800 SSD.
    • Cloning: Alternatively, you can clone your existing operating system from another drive to the MTS800 SSD using disk cloning software. Ensure the cloning software supports SSD optimization features like TRIM alignment.
  • Driver Installation: Typically, standard SATA drivers provided by your operating system are sufficient. No specific drivers are usually required for the MTS800 SSD itself.
  • TRIM Command: Ensure your operating system has TRIM enabled. TRIM helps maintain the performance of the SSD over time by allowing the OS to inform the SSD which data blocks are no longer in use and can be wiped. Modern operating systems usually enable TRIM by default for SSDs.

Operating

The Transcend MTS800 SSD is designed to significantly improve system responsiveness and application load times. Once installed and configured, it operates as a standard storage device within your system.

  • Boot Drive: When used as a boot drive, expect significantly faster boot times compared to traditional hard disk drives.
  • Application Performance: Applications installed on the SSD will launch and operate more quickly.
  • Data Transfer: Benefit from high read and write speeds for large file transfers. The MTS800 offers exceptional transfer speeds of up to 560MB/s read and 310MB/s write.
  • DevSleep Mode: This feature allows the device to completely shut down the SATA interface when not in use, conserving battery life in mobile devices. This is an automatic power-saving feature managed by the SSD and compatible systems.
  • Power Shield: The integrated Power Shield technology helps prevent data loss in the event of a sudden power outage, enhancing data integrity.

Maintenance

To ensure optimal performance and longevity of your Transcend MTS800 SSD, consider the following maintenance practices:

  • TRIM Command: Regularly verify that the TRIM command is active on your operating system. This command helps the SSD manage its storage efficiently and prevents performance degradation over time.
  • Firmware Updates: Periodically check the Transcend official website for any available firmware updates for your MTS800 SSD. Firmware updates can improve performance, enhance compatibility, and fix potential issues. Follow the manufacturer's instructions carefully when performing firmware updates, as incorrect procedures can lead to data loss.
  • SSD Management Software: Transcend may offer proprietary SSD management software (e.g., Transcend SSD Scope) that provides tools for monitoring drive health (S.M.A.R.T. data), performing secure erase, and managing firmware updates. It is recommended to use such tools if available.
  • Avoid Full Capacity: While SSDs perform well even when nearly full, maintaining some free space (e.g., 10-15%) can help the drive's wear-leveling algorithms operate more effectively, potentially extending its lifespan.
  • Regular Backups: As with any storage device, regularly back up your important data to an external drive or cloud storage to prevent data loss in case of unforeseen hardware failure.

Troubleshooting

If you encounter issues with your Transcend MTS800 SSD, consider the following troubleshooting steps:

  • SSD Not Detected:
    • Ensure the SSD is correctly seated in the M.2 slot.
    • Check your BIOS/UEFI settings to confirm the M.2 slot is enabled and configured for AHCI mode.
    • Verify that your motherboard's M.2 slot is compatible with SATA-based M.2 SSDs (some slots are PCIe/NVMe only).
    • If using an adapter, ensure the adapter is correctly installed and compatible.
  • Slow Performance:
    • Confirm that TRIM is enabled in your operating system.
    • Check for available firmware updates for the SSD.
    • Ensure your SATA controller drivers are up to date.
    • Verify that the SSD is connected to a SATA III (6Gb/s) port if applicable, and not a slower SATA II (3Gb/s) port.
    • Avoid running too many background processes that might consume disk I/O.
  • Operating System Errors/Crashes:
    • Run a disk check utility (e.g., CHKDSK on Windows) to identify and fix file system errors.
    • Ensure your operating system is fully updated.
    • If issues persist, consider reinstalling the operating system or performing a clean install.
  • Data Loss:
    • Immediately stop using the drive to prevent further data corruption.
    • Consult professional data recovery services if data is critical and cannot be recovered through software.
