Eaz-Lift Trekker Weight Distribution Hitch with Progressive Sway Control

Model: 48704

Brand: Eaz-Lift

Product Overview

The Eaz-Lift Trekker Weight Distribution Hitch with Progressive Sway Control is designed to enhance towing stability and safety by distributing the tongue weight of your trailer evenly across the axles of both the tow vehicle and the trailer. This system helps to reduce trailer sway, improve steering, and level the ride, providing a more controlled and comfortable towing experience.

  • Instant sway resistance for improved towing stability.
  • Noise suppressed design for quieter operation.
  • Easy on/off sway control allows for simple engagement and disengagement, adapting to various road conditions.
  • Automatic tension release disengages for tight maneuvering, reducing wear on components.

Safety Information

Read and understand all instructions before installation and operation. Failure to follow these instructions could result in serious injury or property damage. Always adhere to your vehicle and trailer manufacturer's towing capacity and tongue weight limits.

  • Professional Installation Recommended: If you are not comfortable with mechanical installations, seek professional assistance.
  • Weight Limits: Never exceed the maximum tongue weight or gross trailer weight rating of the hitch, your tow vehicle, or your trailer.
  • Proper Tools: Use appropriate tools, including a torque wrench, for all installations.
  • Regular Inspection: Before each tow, inspect all hitch components for wear, damage, or loose fasteners.
  • Clearance: Ensure adequate ground clearance and clearance for turning maneuvers.
  • Sway Control: Disengage sway control when backing up or performing tight turns to prevent damage to the system.

Setup and Installation

Proper setup is crucial for optimal performance and safety. This section provides a general guide; refer to the detailed instruction manual included in your package for precise measurements and torque specifications.

1. Prepare Tow Vehicle and Trailer

  1. Park the tow vehicle and trailer on a level surface.
  2. Ensure the trailer is loaded as it would be for travel.
  3. Measure the height of the front and rear bumper of the tow vehicle from the ground. Record these measurements.
  4. Measure the height of the trailer coupler from the ground.

2. Assemble Hitch Head and Shank

  1. Insert the receiver shank into your tow vehicle's receiver hitch. Secure with a hitch pin and clip.
  2. Attach the hitch head to the receiver shank using the provided bolts. Adjust the angle of the hitch head to achieve proper trailer leveling. This often involves trial and error to find the correct tilt.
  3. Install the hitch ball onto the hitch head. Ensure it is torqued to the manufacturer's specifications.

3. Install Spring Bars

  1. Insert the round spring bars into the sockets on the hitch head. Secure them with the provided pins.
  2. Position the frame-mounted sway control brackets on the trailer frame. The ideal location is typically 28 to 32 inches back from the center of the coupler. Ensure they are level and securely bolted to the frame.

4. Engage Sway Control

  1. Use the supplied wrench to tighten the red activation caps on the hitch head. These caps apply tension to the internal sway control mechanism.
  2. Tighten each cap to 45 ft-lbs. It is recommended to mark the position of the caps once torqued for easy re-setting.

5. Final Adjustments and Measurements

  1. After engaging the spring bars and sway control, re-measure the front and rear bumper heights of the tow vehicle. The goal is to return the vehicle to as close to its original unhitched height as possible, or to achieve a slight drop in the rear.
  2. Adjust the tilt of the hitch head and the position of the frame brackets as needed to achieve proper weight distribution. This may require several iterations.

Operating Instructions

Connecting the Trailer

  1. Ensure the tow vehicle and trailer are on level ground.
  2. Back the tow vehicle to align with the trailer coupler.
  3. Lower the trailer coupler onto the hitch ball and secure the latch.
  4. Raise the trailer tongue jack slightly to relieve tension on the spring bars.
  5. Insert the spring bars into the hitch head and secure with pins.
  6. Engage the sway control by tightening the red activation caps to their marked positions (45 ft-lbs).
  7. Lower the trailer tongue jack completely and retract it.
  8. Connect safety chains and trailer wiring.

Disconnecting the Trailer

  1. Park the tow vehicle and trailer on level ground.
  2. Chock the trailer wheels.
  3. Disconnect safety chains and trailer wiring.
  4. Loosen the red activation caps on the hitch head to disengage sway control.
  5. Raise the trailer tongue jack to relieve tension on the spring bars.
  6. Remove the pins and then the spring bars from the hitch head.
  7. Continue raising the trailer tongue jack until the coupler clears the hitch ball.
  8. Move the tow vehicle away from the trailer.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance ensures the longevity and safe operation of your Eaz-Lift Trekker hitch.

  • Lubrication: Periodically lubricate the hitch ball, spring bar sockets, and any pivot points with a good quality grease.
  • Inspection: Before each use, inspect all bolts, nuts, and pins for tightness. Check for any signs of wear, cracks, or damage on the hitch head, spring bars, and frame brackets. Replace any damaged components immediately.
  • Cleaning: Keep the hitch components clean from dirt, rust, and debris.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the hitch in a dry place to prevent corrosion.

Troubleshooting

ProblemPossible CauseSolution
Excessive Trailer SwayImproper weight distribution; sway control not engaged or insufficient tension; overloaded trailer; incorrect tire pressure.Re-adjust hitch head tilt and frame bracket position; ensure sway control caps are tightened to 45 ft-lbs; verify trailer loading and tire pressure.
Hitch Noise (Creaking/Groaning)Lack of lubrication; components rubbing.Lubricate hitch ball, spring bar sockets, and pivot points. Ensure all bolts are properly torqued.
Difficulty Engaging/Disengaging Spring BarsToo much tension on spring bars; not enough tongue jack lift.Ensure trailer tongue jack is raised sufficiently to relieve tension before attempting to remove or install spring bars.
Tow Vehicle Not LevelIncorrect hitch setup; insufficient weight distribution.Re-evaluate hitch head tilt and spring bar tension. Ensure trailer is loaded correctly.
