Eaz-Lift ReCurve R6™ Adaptive Sway Control Weight Distributing Hitch System

Installation Instructions

The Eaz-Lift ReCurve R6 utilizes Innovative Adaptive Sway Technology™ to enhance the safety and handling characteristics of your trailer and tow vehicle combination. This system combats trailer sway by increasing resistance proportionally to the trailer's angular rotation, dampening oscillations and returning the rig to a stable configuration. Unlike conventional hitches that provide constant resistance, the ReCurve R6 adaptively applies sway control only when needed and disengages automatically for maneuvering.

Ball Mount Installation

WARNING: Towing a trailer changes the handling characteristics of the tow vehicle, potentially causing sudden trailer sway. The Eaz-Lift ReCurve Weight Distributing Hitch with Adaptive Sway Control dampens and reduces trailer sway and improves handling by distributing trailer tongue weight. Short wheelbase vehicles may induce sway when towing a trailer; use extreme caution.

Determining Ball Height:

  1. The ReCurve hitch comes with a pre-installed 2-5/16" hitch ball. Measure the trailer from ground level to the top of the ball coupler, ensuring the trailer is parallel to the ground. For every 100 lb of tongue weight, add approximately 1/8" to this measurement to compensate for vehicle "squat". For example, if the coupler height is 17" and the tongue weight is 600 lb (6 x 1/8" = 3/4"), the target hitch setting height (top of ball, assembled) is 17-3/4".
  2. After ball height is determined, slide the shank into the receiver. Insert the hitch pin (48021) and spring clip (48028). Slide the ball mount up or down the shank (the shank can be used in the up or down position) until the nearest dimension is obtained and the holes align with the shank. Insert bolt (10c), lock washer (10f), and nut (10d) into the bottom hole, but do not tighten yet.
  3. The thumbscrew (48037) is used to gain the correct downward angle of the spring bars. It threads into the 5/8" threaded hole in the ball mount's "U" bracket. Start with the top plate of the ball mount level with the ground to determine the spring bar angle. The spring bar angle affects the weight distribution load. Thread the thumbscrew to achieve the proper angle. Angling the spring bars down will produce more preload on the spring bars, distributing more tongue weight to the front axle. Angling them upward away from the ground reduces preload, distributing less weight to the front axle. The goal is to have both the tow vehicle and trailer level with the ground. Excessive preload can unbalance tow vehicle axles; insufficient preload can cause the rear axle to carry too much weight. Use the thumbscrew and jack screw to temporarily secure the ball mount while determining the spring bar angle.

To confirm even tongue weight distribution, measure front and rear bumper heights before and after applying trailer tongue weight with loaded spring bars. Both bumper heights should decrease by approximately the same amount. If the difference exceeds 1", adjust spring bar preload. To ease hooking up, raise the front of the trailer and rear of the towing vehicle slightly using the trailer tongue jack to reduce tension between the spring bar and hook-up hanger.

Once the desired spring bar angle is set, insert the top bolt (10c) with serrated washer (10a). Install the second serrated washer and nut (10d) to secure the unit. Before tightening bolts, lock the set screw. Tighten the 3/4" top bolt to 260 ft-lbs and the lower bolt to 260 ft-lbs. After the first day of towing, check the set screw for tightness.

CAUTION: Do not use air shocks or air bags to support any of the trailer's tongue weight. These should only support added weight loaded in the rear of the tow vehicle.

Diagram descriptions:

  • Figure 1 shows maximum tilt down with the thumbscrew threaded out.
  • Figure 2 shows maximum tilt up with the thumbscrew fully threaded in.
  • Figure 3 illustrates using the thumbscrew and the 5/8" adjustment point.
  • Figure 4 shows the ball-together ball mount with 7-5/8" adjustment, each adjustment 1-1/4". Extra hi-low shanks are available.
  • Before Hooking Up: Spring bars should slope at the angle determined by the thumbscrew.
  • After Hooking Up: Spring bar should be parallel with trailer frame.

Hook-Up Brackets Installation

Spring Bar Insertion:

  1. Spring bars can be inserted into either side of the Ball Mount. Insert the Spring Bar into the Ball Mount socket; it will automatically lock by the Spring Bar Locking Device. Test by moving the bar up and down. To remove, swing the bar parallel to the bumper to disengage the locking device, then lift the bar out.
  2. Hook Up Hanger Placement: Position the Hook Up Hanger centerline 32" from the center of the coupler ball socket. This placement ensures proper alignment of the trunnion and sway control mechanism. To confirm, position the tow vehicle and trailer in a straight line. Rotate the spring bar stud to the slot in the Hook Up Hanger. The stud should locate in the slot in approximately the same position on both sides. If not, check hanger position and confirm trunnion orientation is straight.
  3. Securing the Hanger: Once the correct location is determined, insert the supplied 1/2" flat head screws into the hanger's corresponding holes based on the trailer frame height. Place the Hook Up Strap on the opposite side of the trailer frame, aligning its holes with the screws. Install the supplied 1/2" serrated flange nuts. Do not tighten fully; snug the nuts so the hanger is held but can still slide on the frame. (Use #48740 Hanger for bottom mount couplers).
  4. Loading the Spring Bar: The hanger height is set to ensure spring bars are level. Additional preload is achieved by adjusting the ball mount tilt using the thumbscrew. Load the spring bar to confirm hanger orientation. Insert the pivot pin of the Hook Up Tool into the pivot hole of the Hook Up Hanger. Position the Spring Bar in the throat of the Hook Up Tool and rotate the handle upward until the spring bar seats on the hanger, aligning the spring bar stud with the hanger slot. If the stud does not fall freely into the slot, recheck hanger placement and sway control function. Secure the spring bar by inserting pin (#48743) through the hanger's pivot hole. The hanger should rotate to accommodate the angled bottom of the spring bar. Ensure the bottom of the spring bar contacts the hanger across its full width. The spring bar stud should be centered in each hanger, and the ball mount centered. Re-measure the distance from the coupler center to the hanger center on both sides; they should be equal. Reposition the hanger if necessary and confirm the stud is still centered. Tighten the hanger nuts in an alternating pattern to ensure the hanger and strap are squarely clamped to the trailer frame.
  5. Releasing Spring Bar Tension: Raise the front of the trailer and rear of the towing vehicle approximately 3" using the trailer tongue jack to relieve tension. Remove the pin (#48743). Insert the Hook Up Tool pivot pin into the hanger's pivot hole with the spring bar in the tool's throat. Carefully rotate the Hook Up Tool downward until spring bar preload is relieved. Remove the Hook Up Tool from the hanger.

How-to-Use

Activating the Adaptive Sway System: The ReCurve R6 is factory pre-calibrated for optimal sway control. Activation Cams engage and disengage the system. To engage, rotate the Activation Cam clockwise using the included hex key wrench. It is recommended to park the tow vehicle and trailer in an angled configuration to reduce torque. The sway control function will self-engage once the vehicle and trailer return to a straight-line orientation.

Disengaging the Adaptive Sway System: To disengage, rotate the Activation Cam counterclockwise using the hex key wrench. Again, an angled configuration can make this easier.

Storage of the ReCurve R6 Hitch: It is recommended that the hitch be stored in an area protected from environmental elements when not in use. Remove preload from the adaptive sway system by repeating the disengagement steps.

ReCurve Maintenance: Lubricate the trunnion spindle and the two engagement ball guides. The trunnion spindle has a factory-installed grease fitting. For engagement ball and guide lubrication: disengage the Adaptive Sway System. Rotate the trunnion so the engagement balls and guides are visible. Apply wheel bearing grease to the surface of the engagement ball. Rotate the engagement balls while applying grease to work it into the ball guide pocket. Ensure these three critical areas have been sufficiently lubricated prior to each use.
