4. Setup & Installation
Proper installation is crucial for optimal performance and longevity of your amplifier. Follow these steps carefully.
4.1 Mounting the Amplifier
Choose a mounting location that is dry, well-ventilated, and secure. Ensure there is sufficient space around the amplifier for air circulation. Avoid mounting on carpet or directly to metal surfaces without insulation.

4.2 Power and Ground Wiring
Connect the power, ground, and remote turn-on wires as follows:
- +12V (Power): Connect to the positive terminal of the vehicle's battery using an appropriate gauge power cable (8ga recommended, 0ga reducer included). Install an in-line fuse holder within 18 inches of the battery.
- GND (Ground): Connect to a clean, unpainted metal surface of the vehicle's chassis. Ensure a solid, low-resistance connection. Use the same gauge wire as the power cable.
- REM (Remote Turn-On): Connect to the remote output of your head unit. This wire turns the amplifier on and off with your car's audio system.

4.3 Speaker Connections
The TN4.900D is a 4-channel amplifier. Connect your speakers to the CH1, CH2, CH3, and CH4 terminals. Ensure correct polarity (+ to + and - to -). Refer to the diagram below for typical 4-channel and bridged configurations.
Speaker Wiring Configurations:
- 4-Channel Stereo: Connect one speaker to each channel (CH1, CH2, CH3, CH4). Minimum impedance per channel is 2 Ohms.
- 2-Channel Bridged: Bridge channels 1 & 2 for one speaker, and channels 3 & 4 for another speaker. Minimum impedance per bridged pair is 4 Ohms. This configuration provides higher power output for subwoofers or high-power component sets.
4.4 Input Connections (RCA)
Connect the RCA output cables from your head unit or signal processor to the amplifier's RCA input jacks (CH1, CH2, CH3, CH4).

Figure 3: View of the control panel on the Soundstream TN4.900D, showing RCA inputs, gain controls, and crossover adjustments.
4.5 Initial Settings Adjustment
Before powering on, set all gain controls to minimum. Set crossover switches to "FULL" or "LPF" / "HPF" as required for your speaker setup. Adjust these settings carefully after the system is powered on.
5. Operating Instructions
Once installed, the amplifier will turn on automatically with your head unit via the remote turn-on wire.
5.1 Gain Adjustment
The gain control matches the amplifier's input sensitivity to the output of your head unit. To set the gain:
- Turn the head unit volume to about 75% of its maximum.
- Slowly increase the amplifier's gain control until you hear slight distortion, then back it off slightly.
- Repeat for all channels.
Note: The gain control is not a volume control. Setting it too high can cause distortion and damage to speakers.
5.2 Crossover Adjustment
The TN4.900D features variable high-pass (HPF), low-pass (LPF), and subsonic crossovers to optimize sound output for different speakers.
- HPF (High Pass Filter): Allows frequencies above the set point to pass through. Typically used for full-range speakers to prevent low bass frequencies from causing distortion. Adjustable from 20Hz-4kHz.
- LPF (Low Pass Filter): Allows frequencies below the set point to pass through. Typically used for subwoofers. Adjustable from 50Hz-5kHz.
- Band-Pass Crossover: Allows a specific range of frequencies to pass through. This is achieved by combining HPF and LPF settings.
- Subsonic Filter: Filters out extremely low frequencies that are inaudible and can damage subwoofers.
Adjust these filters to match the frequency response capabilities of your speakers for optimal sound quality and speaker protection.
6. Maintenance
The Soundstream TN4.900D amplifier requires minimal maintenance. Regular checks can help ensure long-term performance.
- Cleaning: Periodically wipe the amplifier's exterior with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaners. Ensure ventilation fins are free from dust and debris.
- Connection Checks: Annually, inspect all power, ground, remote, and speaker connections to ensure they are secure and free from corrosion. Loose connections can lead to poor performance or damage.
- Ventilation: Ensure that the amplifier's mounting location remains clear of obstructions to allow for proper airflow and prevent overheating.
7. Troubleshooting
If you experience issues with your amplifier, refer to the following common problems and solutions before contacting support.
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| No Power / Amplifier Not Turning On |
|
|
| No Sound Output |
|
|
| Distorted Sound |
|
