The ONKYO FR-N9NX is a versatile mini component system designed for high-quality audio playback. It features a USB Direct Play terminal for comfortable playback of PC sound sources, a high-rigidity body with a high-grade aluminum panel and aluminum volume knob, and an authentic discrete configuration amplifier. It incorporates Wide Range Amplifier Technology (WRAT) developed for high-end amplifiers, ensuring superior sound performance. The unit includes a built-in FM/AM tuner with 30 station memory (with FM auto preset capability) and an optimum gain volume for rich sound quality at low volumes. It also provides abundant input/output terminals for system expansion with various optional devices such as an iPod dedicated dock or cassette deck.

2. Important Safety Instructions

  • Power Source: Connect the unit only to the specified AC voltage.

3. Setup and Connections

3.1 Unpacking

3.2 Connecting Speakers

Connect your speakers to the speaker terminals on the rear panel of the FR-N9NX. Ensure correct polarity (positive to positive, negative to negative) for optimal sound quality.

3.3 Connecting Audio Sources

  • Analog Devices: Use RCA cables to connect external analog audio devices (e.g., a cassette deck, turntable with a pre-amp) to the TAPE IN or VIDEO IN jacks.
  • Digital Devices: Connect digital audio sources (e.g., a TV, game console) to the OPTICAL DIGITAL IN terminal using an optical cable.
  • USB Devices: For direct playback of digital audio files, insert a USB storage device into the front USB port.

3.4 Antenna Connection

Connect the supplied FM and AM antennas to their respective terminals on the rear panel for radio reception.

3.5 Power Connection

After all other connections are made, plug the power cord into an AC outlet.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Basic Operation

  • Power On/Off: Press the ON/STANDBY button on the front panel or the remote control to turn the unit on or off.
  • Source Selection: Use the INPUT/CURSOR buttons on the front panel or the dedicated source buttons (CD, MD, FM/AM, USB, LINE IN) on the remote control to select your desired audio source.
  • Volume Control: Rotate the VOLUME knob on the front panel or use the VOLUME +/- buttons on the remote control to adjust the sound level.

4.2 CD Playback

  1. Press the CD button to select the CD source.
  2. Press the OPEN/CLOSE button to open the CD tray.
  3. Place a CD with the label side up in the tray and press OPEN/CLOSE again to close it.
  4. Press the PLAY button to start playback.

4.3 MD Playback and Recording

  1. Press the MD button to select the MD source.
  2. Insert an MD into the MD slot.
  3. Press the PLAY button for playback.
  4. For recording, select the desired input source (e.g., CD, Tuner, LINE IN), then press the REC button on the MD section.

4.4 Tuner Operation (FM/AM)

  1. Press the FM/AM button to select the tuner source.
  2. Use the TUNING +/- buttons to manually tune to a station.
  3. To automatically scan for stations, press and hold the TUNING +/- buttons.
  4. To store a station, tune to the desired frequency, then press MEMORY followed by a preset number.

4.5 USB Playback

  1. Insert a USB storage device into the front USB port.
  2. Press the USB button to select the USB source.
  3. Use the navigation buttons on the remote control to browse and select files.
  4. Press the PLAY button to start playback.

4.6 Remote Control

The included remote control provides full functionality for the FR-N9NX. Ensure batteries are correctly inserted (2 AA alkaline batteries).

5. Maintenance and Care

  • Cleaning the Unit: Wipe the unit with a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn dirt, dampen the cloth with a mild detergent solution, then wipe dry. Do not use abrasive cloths, thinners, alcohol, or other chemical solvents, as they may damage the finish.
  • Cleaning Discs/MDs: Use a clean, soft, dry cloth to wipe discs/MDs from the center outwards. Do not use solvents or abrasive cleaners.
  • Ventilation: Regularly check that the ventilation openings are not blocked by dust or debris.
  • Power Cord: Handle the power cord carefully. Do not pull it to disconnect from the outlet.
