1. Introduction

This manual provides detailed instructions for the operation and maintenance of your Zoom H2n Handy Recorder. 2.1 Key Components

• Microphone Grille: Houses the MS (Mid-Side) and XY stereo microphones.
• LCD Display: Shows recording status, settings, and menu options.
• Recording Button: Initiates and stops recording.
• Navigation Buttons: Used for menu navigation and playback control.
• Mic Gain Dial: Adjusts the input sensitivity of the microphones.
• Line In Jack: 3.5mm stereo input for external microphones or line-level devices.

3. Setup

3.1 Battery Installation

The H2n operates on two AA batteries. For optimal performance, use alkaline or rechargeable NiMH batteries.

1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the unit.
2. Slide the cover downwards to open it.
3. Insert two AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
4. Close the battery compartment cover by sliding it upwards until it clicks into place.

3.2 Inserting a microSD Card

The H2n records directly to a microSD or microSDHC card. A card is required for recording.

1. Locate the microSD card slot on the side of the unit.
2. Insert the microSD card with the contacts facing upwards until it clicks into place.
3. To remove, push the card gently until it springs out.

Note: Always format a new microSD card using the H2n's menu before first use to ensure compatibility and optimal performance.

4. Operating Instructions

4.1 Power On/Off

• To Power On: Slide the Power/Hold switch downwards and hold for a few seconds until the display illuminates.
• To Power Off: Slide the Power/Hold switch downwards and hold for a few seconds until the display turns off.
• Hold Function: Slide the Power/Hold switch upwards to the 'HOLD' position to lock all buttons and prevent accidental operation during recording or transport.

4.2 Basic Recording

1. Select Recording Mode: Use the menu to select your desired recording mode (e.g., MS, XY, 2ch, 4ch).
2. Adjust Mic Gain: Rotate the Mic Gain dial on the side of the unit to set the input level. Monitor the level meters on the LCD display to avoid clipping (distortion). Aim for peak levels around -12dB to -6dB.
3. Start Recording: Press the red RECORD button once. The recording indicator will illuminate, and the time counter will begin.
4. Stop Recording: Press the red RECORD button again. The recording will stop, and the file will be saved.

5. Recording Modes

The H2n offers multiple microphone configurations to suit various recording scenarios.

• MS (Mid-Side) Stereo: This mode uses a forward-facing 'Mid' microphone and a side-facing 'Side' microphone. It allows for adjustable stereo width after recording, providing flexibility in post-production. Ideal for capturing ambient sounds or music with a sense of space.
• XY Stereo: This configuration uses two unidirectional microphones positioned at a 90-degree angle. It provides a natural and realistic stereo image with excellent depth and localization. Suitable for recording live performances, interviews, or acoustic instruments.
• 2-Channel Mode: Records a standard stereo file using either the MS or XY microphone configuration.
• 4-Channel Mode: Simultaneously records both the MS and XY microphone signals as separate stereo pairs. This allows for advanced mixing and sound design possibilities, including creating immersive surround sound.

6. Playback and File Management

6.1 Playback

1. Press the PLAY/PAUSE button to enter playback mode.
2. Use the navigation buttons to select a file.
3. Press PLAY/PAUSE again to start playback.
4. Adjust the volume using the VOLUME +/- buttons on the side.

6.2 Transferring Files to a Computer

Connect the H2n to your computer using a USB cable to transfer recorded files.

1. Ensure the H2n is powered off.
2. Connect the H2n to your computer's USB port using a Mini-USB cable.
3. Power on the H2n. The device will prompt you to select "Storage" or "Audio Interface".
4. Select "Storage" to access the microSD card as a removable drive on your computer.
5. Drag and drop files from the H2n's storage to your computer.
6. Safely eject the H2n from your computer before disconnecting the USB cable.

7. Advanced Features

The H2n includes several advanced functions to enhance your recordings and playback.

• Lo-cut Filter: Reduces unwanted low-frequency noise such as wind or rumble.
• Compressor/Limiter: Helps to control dynamic range, preventing clipping and making quiet sounds more audible.

• Key Control: Changes the playback key without altering speed.

• Normalize: Adjusts the overall volume of a recording to a consistent level.
• MP3 Post-Encode: Converts WAV files to MP3 format after recording.
