1. Introduction
The TASCAM DR-05 brings high-quality stereo recording to an easy-to-use portable powerhouse. It records in MP3 or WAV format, including 96kHz/24-bit high-resolution audio, to microSD or microSDHC media. Featuring a pair of all-new microphones capable of handling up to 125dB SPL with sensitivity to capture every detail, the DR-05 also includes new recording features like Peak Reduction and Quick Menu for album-quality recording in the palm of your hand.

2. What's in the Box
Your TASCAM DR-05 package should include the following items:
- Portable Digital Recorder (TASCAM DR-05)

- 2 AA Batteries (included)
- USB Power or Optional AC Adapter (Tascam PS-P515U, sold separately)

3. Setup
3.1. Installing Batteries
The DR-05 operates on two AA batteries. To install, open the battery compartment cover on the rear of the unit and insert the batteries according to the polarity indicators (+/-). Ensure the cover clicks securely into place.

3.2. Inserting MicroSD Card
Locate the microSD card slot on the side of the unit. Gently push the microSD card into the slot until it clicks and is securely seated. To remove, push the card in again until it springs out.

4. Operating Instructions
4.1. Power On/Off
To power on the unit, press and hold the /I HOME button until the display lights up. To power off, press and hold the same button until the display turns off.

4.2. Recording Audio
To begin recording, press the RECORD button once to enter record standby mode. The REC indicator will blink. Press RECORD again to start recording. The REC indicator will light continuously. To stop recording, press the STOP button.
The DR-05 features built-in omni-directional microphones. You can also connect an external microphone or line-level source via the 1/8" stereo mic/line input, which supports plug-in power.

The Peak Reduction function, optimized for music recording, automatically sets the gain of while recording. Limiter and low-cut filter features help prevent distortion.
4.3. Playback
To play back a recorded file, navigate to the desired file using the directional buttons and press the PLAY button. Press STOP to halt playback.
The DR-05 offers Variable Speed Playback (50%-150%) without changing the pitch, useful for transcribing. It also supports Loop and Repeat Playback. The Level Align feature prevents uneven volume levels during playback.

4.4. Menu Navigation
Press the MENU button to access the main menu. Use the directional buttons (+, -, left, right) to navigate through options and the PLAY button to confirm selections.
Within the menu, you can adjust various settings including recording format (WAV/MP3), sample rate (up to 96kHz/24-bit), and microphone power for external mics. The unit also includes a built-in Chromatic Tuner.
5. Maintenance
To ensure the longevity and optimal performance of your TASCAM DR-05, follow these maintenance guidelines:
- Cleaning: Use a soft, dry cloth to clean the unit. Avoid using liquid cleaners or aerosols.
- Storage: Store the recorder in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
- Battery Care: Remove batteries if the unit will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage.
- Microphone Protection: When not in use, consider using a microphone cover or storing the unit in a protective case to prevent dust and debris from entering the microphone capsules.
6. Troubleshooting
If you encounter issues with your TASCAM DR-05, refer to the common problems and solutions below:
- No Power:
- Ensure batteries are correctly inserted with proper polarity.
- Replace old batteries with new ones.
- Check if the unit is connected to a USB power source (if applicable).
- No Recording/Playback:
- Verify that a microSD card is inserted and has sufficient free space.
- Check the recording level settings to ensure they are not too low.
- Ensure the HOLD switch on the side of the unit is not engaged, as this locks all buttons.
- Distorted Audio:
- Reduce the recording level to prevent clipping.
- Enable the Limiter or Peak Reduction function in the recording settings.
- Check for external noise sources in the recording environment.
- Microphone Noise:
- Ensure the low-cut filter is enabled if recording in windy or noisy environments.
- Use an external windscreen (sold separately) for outdoor recording.
