1. Introduction
This manual provides essential information for the proper use, setup, operation, and maintenance of the Mitutoyo 543-400B Absolute LCD Digimatic Indicator. This precision measuring instrument is designed for accurate dimensional measurement in various industrial and scientific applications.
The 543-400B model features an LCD display, an absolute electrostatic capacitance type linear encoder, and offers functions such as origin-set/preset, zeroset, Go/No-Go judgment, counting direction switching, power on/off, data output, and inch/mm conversion (on inch/metric models). It is powered by a single SR44 battery, providing approximately 5,000 hours of life under normal use, and boasts an IP42 or IP53 dust/water protection level.
2. Key Features
- Compact design, comparable to standard Series 2 dial indicators, with a large, easy-to-read LCD.
- Go/No-Go Judgment functionality, allowing setting of upper and lower tolerance limits with full-size character display of results.
- Toggleable positive/negative count based on spindle movement.
- Equipped with an absolute linear encoder, displaying the spindle's "absolute position" from the origin upon power-on, eliminating over-speed errors due to unlimited response speed.
- The indicator face can be rotated 330 degrees for optimal viewing angle.
- Features SPC data output for statistical process control integration.
- Includes alarms for low voltage, counting value composition error, over-flow error, and tolerance limit setting error.
- Supports internal calculations using the simple formula F(x) = Ax.

Main Components:
- LCD Display: Large, clear digital readout for measurement values and function indicators.
- Control Buttons: MODE, SET, and DATA ON/OFF buttons for various operations and settings.
- Measuring Spindle: The movable rod with a contact point at its end, used to make contact with the workpiece.
- Stem: The cylindrical part (8mm diameter) used for mounting the indicator into a stand or fixture.
- Back: Flat back design for stable mounting.
- Battery Compartment: Houses the SR44 battery.
4. Setup
4.1 Battery Installation
- Locate the battery compartment cover on the side of the indicator.
- Carefully remove the cover.
- Insert one SR44 battery (part number 938882) with the correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
- Replace the battery compartment cover securely.
Note: The battery life is approximately 5,000 hours under normal use. Replace the battery when the low voltage alarm appears on the display.
4.2 Mounting the Indicator
The Mitutoyo 543-400B indicator features an 8mm stem diameter and an M2.5 x 0.45 thread for the contact point, allowing for versatile mounting options.
- Select a stable and appropriate indicator stand or fixture.
- Insert the 8mm diameter stem of the indicator into the clamping mechanism of the stand.
- Securely tighten the clamping screw on the stand to hold the indicator firmly in place. Ensure the indicator is perpendicular to the surface being measured, if applicable.
- Adjust the indicator's position and height as needed for your measurement application. The indicator face can be rotated 330 degrees for optimal viewing.
5. Operating Instructions
5.1 Power On/Off
- To power on the indicator, press the ON/OFF button. The display will illuminate.
- To power off the indicator, press and hold the ON/OFF button until the display turns off.
5.2 Zero-Setting and Origin-Setting
The absolute linear encoder ensures that the indicator always displays the spindle's "absolute position" from the origin at power-on, eliminating the need for repeated origin setting.
- Zero-Setting: To set the current spindle position as zero for relative measurements, press the SET button. The display will show "0.00" (or "0.000" depending on resolution).
- Origin-Setting (Preset): For specific applications requiring a preset origin, refer to the detailed instructions in the full product manual or contact Mitutoyo support. This function allows setting a specific value at a given point.
5.3 Inch/Millimeter Conversion
For models supporting both units, you can switch between inch and millimeter display modes.
- Press the MODE button to toggle between inch (IN) and millimeter (MM) units. The active unit will be indicated on the display.
5.4 Go/No-Go Judgment
This feature allows for quick pass/fail determination based on predefined tolerance limits.
- Setting Tolerance Limits: Access the tolerance setting mode (typically via the MODE button or a combination of buttons). Input the upper and lower tolerance limits according to your application requirements. Refer to the full manual for specific steps.
- Performing Judgment: As measurements are taken, the display will indicate "GO" (within tolerance) or "NG" (No-Go, outside tolerance) in full-size characters.
5.5 Data Output (SPC)
The indicator is equipped with SPC data output capability for integration with data collection systems.
- Connect the appropriate SPC data cable (sold separately) to the data output port on the indicator.
- Use compatible data collection software or devices to receive measurement data.
- Press the DATA button (or a combination) to transmit the current measurement value.
6. Maintenance
6.1 Cleaning
- Regularly wipe the indicator body and spindle with a clean, soft, lint-free cloth.
- For stubborn dirt, use a cloth lightly dampened with mild detergent or isopropyl alcohol. Avoid harsh solvents.
- Ensure no liquid enters the display or button areas.
- Keep the measuring spindle clean and free of debris to ensure smooth movement and accurate readings.
6.2 Battery Replacement
Replace the SR44 battery when the low voltage alarm is displayed or when the indicator fails to power on.
- Follow the battery installation steps outlined in Section 4.1.
- Dispose of used batteries according to local regulations.
6.3 Storage
- Store the indicator in its original case or a protective container when not in use.
- Keep it in a dry environment, away from direct sunlight, extreme temperatures, and excessive humidity.
- Avoid storing in areas with high vibration or magnetic fields.
7. Troubleshooting
| Problem | Possible Cause | Solution |
