1. Introduction

The General Tools MMD4E Digital Pin-Type Moisture Meter is designed for accurate measurement of moisture content in various materials. It features a backlit LCD display, audible and visual alerts for low, medium, and high moisture levels, and an ergonomic design for comfortable use. This meter is suitable for assessing moisture in wood, concrete, drywall, and subflooring, aiding in early detection of water damage and mold prevention.

2. Setup

2.1 Battery Installation

The MMD4E meter requires one 9V battery (included). To install or replace the battery:

  1. Locate the battery compartment on the back of the device.
  2. Slide open the battery cover.
  3. Insert a new 9V battery, ensuring correct polarity.
  4. Close the battery cover securely.

2.2 Pin Cover and Calibration Check

The meter comes with a protective cap that covers the pins. This cap also serves as a calibration checker.

3. Operating Instructions

3.1 Power On/Off

Press the yellow power button () to turn the meter on. Press and hold the power button to turn it off.

3.2 Mode Selection

The MMD4E has two measurement modes: Wood and Building Materials. Press the MODE button to toggle between these two settings.

3.3 Taking Measurements

To obtain a moisture reading:

  1. Ensure the correct mode (Wood or Building) is selected for the material you are testing.
  2. Carefully push the two stainless steel pins into the surface of the material. Ensure both pins are fully inserted for an accurate reading.
  3. The moisture percentage will be displayed on the backlit LCD screen.

3.4 Interpreting Readings and Alerts

The meter provides both digital percentage readings and visual/audible alerts:

3.5 Hold Function

Press the HOLD button to freeze the current reading on the display. This is useful when taking measurements in hard-to-reach areas where the display cannot be easily viewed directly. Press the HOLD button again to release the reading.

4. Maintenance

4.1 Pin Care and Replacement

The stainless steel pins are designed for durability but may become loose or damaged over time, especially when used on very hard materials. If pins become loose, they can often be tightened with a small tool. Replacement pins are available if needed.

4.2 Cleaning

Wipe the meter with a soft, dry cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or immerse the device in water.
