Setup

Powering the Radio

The RCA RP7887 Super Radio 3 can be powered by AC (household current) or DC (batteries).

AC Power

  1. Ensure the radio is placed on a stable, flat surface.
  2. Locate the AC power cord (if included or connect a standard AC cord).
  3. Plug one end of the AC power cord into the AC input jack on the radio (usually located on the back).
  4. Plug the other end into a standard wall outlet (120V AC, 60Hz).
  5. The radio will automatically switch from DC to AC power when plugged in, conserving battery life.

DC (Battery) Power

The radio requires 6 D-size batteries (not included).

  1. Open the battery compartment cover, typically located on the back or bottom of the radio.
  2. Insert 6 D-size batteries, ensuring correct polarity (+/-) as indicated inside the compartment.
  3. Close the battery compartment cover securely.
  4. When operating on battery power, the radio will draw power from the installed batteries.

Note: Remove batteries if the radio will not be used for an extended period to prevent leakage and damage.

Antenna Setup

For optimal reception, extend the telescopic antenna for FM reception. For AM reception, the radio uses a built-in ferrite bar antenna, but an external AM antenna can be connected to the external antenna terminals for improved signal.

Operating Instructions

Turning On/Off and Volume Control

  1. To turn the radio on, rotate the VOLUME knob clockwise until a click is heard and the radio powers on.
  2. Adjust the volume by rotating the VOLUME knob clockwise to increase and counter-clockwise to decrease.
  3. To turn the radio off, rotate the VOLUME knob counter-clockwise until a click is heard and the radio powers off.

Tuning to a Station

  1. Select the desired band (AM or FM) using the BAND slide switch on the control panel.
  2. Rotate the TUNING thumbwheel control (located on the top right of the radio) to scan for stations. Observe the tuning dial to locate the frequency.
  3. For FM reception, fully extend and adjust the telescopic antenna for the best signal.
  4. For AM reception, rotate the radio for optimal signal strength, as the built-in ferrite bar antenna is directional.

Audio Adjustment

Use the TREBLE and BASS rotary knobs on the control panel to customize the sound output.

  • TREBLE: Adjusts the high-frequency sounds. Rotate clockwise for brighter sound, counter-clockwise for softer highs.
  • BASS: Adjusts the low-frequency sounds. Rotate clockwise for deeper bass, counter-clockwise for less bass.

Wide/Normal Band Switch

The WIDE/NORMAL slide switch (for AM band only) allows you to adjust the radio's selectivity.

  • WIDE: Provides a wider audio bandwidth, which can result in richer sound quality, especially for strong local stations.
  • NORMAL: Narrows the audio bandwidth, which can help in separating closely spaced stations and reducing interference from adjacent channels, useful for weaker signals.

Automatic Frequency Control (AFC)

The AFC slide switch (for FM band only) helps to stabilize FM reception.

  • ON: Engages the AFC, which automatically fine-tunes the frequency to maintain a stable signal, reducing drift.
  • OFF: Disables the AFC, allowing for manual fine-tuning, which can be useful for very weak or distant FM stations.

Maintenance

Cleaning

To clean the radio, use a soft, dry cloth. For stubborn marks, slightly dampen the cloth with water.

  • Do not use abrasive cleaners, waxes, or solvents (e.g., alcohol, benzene, thinners) as they may damage the cabinet finish.
  • Avoid spraying liquids directly onto the radio.

Battery Care

  • Replace all batteries at the same time. Do not mix old and new batteries.
  • Do not mix different types of batteries (e.g., alkaline and rechargeable).
  • Remove batteries if the radio will not be used for an extended period to prevent battery leakage and corrosion.
  • Dispose of used batteries responsibly according to local regulations.

Storage

When storing the radio, ensure it is turned off and disconnected from AC power. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and extreme temperatures.
