Product Overview

The Oregon Scientific WR602 is a compact and portable weather radio designed to provide critical alerts for severe weather and civil emergencies. It utilizes S.A.M.E. (Specific Area Message Encoding) technology to filter broadcasts and target specific local areas.

• S.A.M.E. Technology: Filters out distant broadcasts to provide alerts relevant to your specific local area (up to seven counties).

Setup

1. Battery Installation

The WR602 can be powered by the included rechargeable NiMH battery or three standard AA batteries (not included).

1. Locate the battery compartment cover on the back of the radio.
2. Slide the cover off.
3. Insert the rechargeable NiMH battery, observing the correct polarity (+/-). If using AA batteries, insert three AA batteries, ensuring correct polarity.
4. Replace the battery compartment cover.

2. Charging the NiMH Battery

For optimal performance, fully charge the NiMH battery before first use.

1. Connect the AC adapter (if included, or use a compatible USB power source) to the charge cradle.
2. Place the WR602 radio into the charge cradle, ensuring the charging contacts align.
3. A charging indicator light (typically red) on the cradle or radio will illuminate. If the light does not illuminate, ensure the radio is seated correctly and the power source is active.
4. Allow approximately 8-12 hours for a full charge.

3. Initial Power On and Language Setting

Press and hold the POWER button to turn on the radio. The display will prompt you to select a language.

1. Use the UP/DOWN buttons to scroll through English, French, or Spanish.
2. Press the SELECT button to confirm your choice.

4. Setting Time and Date

Follow the on-screen prompts to set the current time and date. Use the UP/DOWN buttons to adjust values and SELECT to move to the next field.

5. Programming S.A.M.E. Codes

S.A.M.E. codes allow the radio to receive alerts specific to your county or region. The WR602 simplifies this process by allowing you to select your state and county by name.

1. Enter the programming menu (refer to your radio's specific button for 'MENU' or 'PROGRAM').
2. Select the option for 'S.A.M.E. Codes' or 'County Codes'.
3. Choose 'Add New' or similar.
4. Use the UP/DOWN buttons to scroll through the list of states and press SELECT.
5. Next, scroll through the list of counties within your selected state and press SELECT for each county you wish to monitor (up to 7).
6. Exit the programming menu. The radio will automatically translate the county name into the correct FIPS code.

6. Channel Selection

The radio can automatically scan for the strongest NOAA weather radio channel or be set manually.

• Automatic: The radio will typically default to automatic channel selection upon initial setup or when entering Travel Mode.
• Manual: In the settings menu, you can manually select a specific NOAA weather radio frequency if known.

Operating Instructions

1. Receiving Alerts

When an alert is broadcast for your programmed area, the WR602 will activate with both an audible alarm and a visual indication on the display. The display will scroll the warning message.

• Audio Alarm: A loud tone will sound to notify you of an incoming alert.
• Visual Alert: The display will show the type of alert (e.g., Tornado Warning, Flood Watch) and relevant details. An indicator light may also flash (e.g., red for warning, green for normal operation). Note that the indicator light may appear dim in bright daylight.
• To silence the audio alarm, press any button. The message will continue to scroll on the display.

2. Understanding Message Levels

NOAA weather radio broadcasts different levels of messages:

• Statement: Informational message, less urgent.
• Watch: Conditions are favorable for a hazardous weather event to occur. Be prepared.
• Warning: A hazardous weather event is occurring or is imminent. Take immediate action.
• Test: Routine weekly or monthly test of the alert system.

3. Travel Mode

The Travel Mode feature is useful when you are away from your home area.

• Press the TRAVEL/HOME button to activate Travel Mode.
• In Travel Mode, the radio will automatically scan for the strongest NOAA weather radio signal and monitor all FIPS codes within range, rather than just your pre-programmed home counties.
• Press the TRAVEL/HOME button again to return to your home settings.

4. Alarm Function

To set or adjust the digital clock alarm:

1. Access the alarm settings through the menu.
2. Use the UP/DOWN buttons to set the desired alarm time.
3. Press SELECT to confirm and activate the alarm.

5. Volume Control

Use the dedicated VOLUME UP/DOWN buttons to adjust the audio output level of the radio and alerts.

Maintenance

1. Battery Care

• Rechargeable NiMH Battery: For best battery life, allow the NiMH battery to fully discharge occasionally before recharging. If the radio will not be used for an extended period, remove the battery.
• Standard AA Batteries: If using standard AA batteries, replace them when the low battery indicator appears. Do not mix old and new batteries, or different types of batteries.

2. Cleaning

Wipe the radio and charge cradle with a soft, damp cloth. Do not use abrasive cleaners or solvents, as these can damage the finish.

3. Storage

When storing the radio for an extended period, remove all batteries and store the device in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight.

Troubleshooting

• Radio not charging in cradle:
  Ensure the radio is properly seated in the charge cradle and the charging contacts on both the radio and cradle are clean and making good contact. Verify the power adapter is securely plugged into a working outlet.
• No signal or excessive static:
  Try repositioning the radio to improve reception. Ensure the antenna is extended. If in Travel Mode, the radio will search for the strongest signal. If in Home Mode, verify your S.A.M.E. codes and channel selection are correct for your area.
• Alerts not received:
  Confirm that your S.A.M.E. codes are correctly programmed for your desired counties. Ensure the radio is powered on and not in a low-battery state. Check that the volume is not set to minimum.
• Display light is dim:
  The indicator light's visibility can be reduced in bright ambient light. This is a characteristic of the device and not necessarily a fault.
• Digital clock/alarm incorrect:
  Re-enter the time and date settings in the setup menu.
