2. Time and Date Setting

The Explorer II features an automatic movement. Before setting, ensure the watch is sufficiently wound.

  1. Unscrew the Winding Crown: Gently unscrew the winding crown (located at 3 o'clock) counter-clockwise until it springs free from the case.
  2. Manual Winding (Position 1): In this position, turn the crown clockwise to manually wind the watch. Approximately 25-30 turns are sufficient to start the movement.
  3. Setting the Date (Position 2): Pull the crown out to the second position. Turn the crown clockwise or counter-clockwise to adjust the date. Note: Avoid setting the date between 9 PM and 3 AM, as this can damage the movement.
  4. Setting the Time and GMT Hand (Position 3): Pull the crown out to the third position. The seconds hand will stop. Turn the crown to set the hour and minute hands. The 24-hour hand (orange) moves in sync with the main hour hand. Set the time to your local time.
  5. Screw Down the Winding Crown: Once set, push the crown back in and screw it down clockwise firmly against the case to ensure water resistance.

3. Bracelet Adjustment

For optimal comfort and security, the Oyster bracelet should fit snugly but not too tightly on your wrist. Adjustments to the bracelet length should be performed by an authorized Rolex retailer to prevent damage. The Oysterclasp features a 5mm Easylink extension system for minor adjustments.

Operating Your Explorer II

1. Automatic Winding

Your Explorer II is equipped with a self-winding mechanical movement. It is continuously wound by the natural motion of your wrist. When fully wound, it has a power reserve of approximately 48 hours. If the watch stops, it can be restarted by manually winding it (as described in the Setup section) or by wearing it for a few hours.

2. Using the GMT Function

The distinctive orange 24-hour hand and the fixed 24-hour engraved bezel allow you to read a second time zone.

  • The main hour, minute, and seconds hands display your local time.
  • The orange 24-hour hand, in conjunction with the 24-hour markings on the bezel, indicates the time in a second time zone (e.g., home time or a reference time).
  • To set the 24-hour hand independently, refer to the "Time and Date Setting" section and adjust the crown accordingly.

3. Water Resistance

The Rolex Explorer II (Model 16570) is water-resistant to 100 meters (330 feet). This makes it suitable for swimming and snorkeling. However, it is not designed for deep-sea diving. Always ensure the winding crown is fully screwed down before exposing the watch to water.

Maintenance

1. Cleaning Your Watch

To maintain the appearance of your Rolex, clean it regularly. After exposure to saltwater, rinse the watch thoroughly with fresh water. Use a soft cloth to dry it. For general cleaning, use a soft brush and soapy water, then rinse and dry.

2. Regular Servicing

Rolex recommends having your watch serviced approximately every 10 years by an authorized Rolex service center. Regular servicing ensures the movement remains lubricated, accurate, and water-resistant.

3. Storage

When not wearing your watch for extended periods, store it in a cool, dry place, preferably in its original box or a watch winder.

Troubleshooting

  • Watch Not Running: If your watch has stopped, it may simply need winding. Manually wind the watch by unscrewing the crown and turning it clockwise for 25-30 rotations. If the issue persists, contact an authorized service center.
  • Incorrect Time/Date: Refer to the "Time and Date Setting" section to re-adjust the time and date. Ensure the crown is fully screwed down after adjustment.
  • Condensation Under Crystal: If you notice condensation under the crystal, this indicates a potential breach in water resistance. Immediately take the watch to an authorized Rolex service center to prevent further damage.
