Introduction

By including a pair of Yamaha NS-6490 bookshelf speakers, you can transform your present 5.1 home theatre into a 7.1-Channel surround sound setup. The NS-6490 speaker was created with the potential to offer a full, clean, and tight sound response for both professionals and home entertainment aficionados. This sophisticated 3-way shelf speaker uses a stunning 8″ high-output woofer, a 4″ midrange driver, a 7/8″ balanced dome tweeter, and 140W of power to provide rich, room-filling, high-fidelity sound.

PRECAUTIONS

Read these precautions carefully before using your speakers.

  • To assure the finest performance, please read this manual carefully. Keep it in a safe place for future reference.
  • Install the speakers in a cool, dry, clean place – away from windows, heat sources, sources of excessive vibration, dust, moisture and cold. Avoid sources of humming (transformers, motors). To prevent fire or electrical shock, do not expose the speakers to rain or water.
  • To prevent the enclosure from warping or discoloring, do not place the speakers where they will be exposed to direct sunlight or excessive humidity. Do not place the following objects on the speakers: Glass, china, etc. If glass etc. falls by vibrations and breaks, it may cause bodily injury. A burning candle etc.
  • If the candle falls by vibrations, it may cause fire and bodily injury. A vessel with water in it  If the vessel falls by vibrations and water spills, it may cause damage to the speakers, and/or you may get an electric shock.
  • Do not place the speakers where foreign objects such as water drips might fall. It might cause a fire, damage to the speakers, and/or bodily injury.
  • Do not place the speakers where they are liable to be knocked over or struck by falling objects. Stable placement will also ensure better sound performance.
  • Placing the speakers on the same shelf or rack as the turntable can result in feedback.
  • Any time you note distortion, reduce the volume control on your amplifier to a lower setting. Never allow your amplifier to be driven into “clipping”. Otherwise, the speakers may be damaged.
  • When using an amplifier with a rated output power higher than the nominal input power of the speakers, care should be taken never to exceed the speakers’ maximum input.
  • Do not attempt to clean the speakers with chemical solvents as this might damage the finish. Use a clean, dry cloth.
  • Do not attempt to modify or fix the speakers. Contact qualified YAMAHA service personnel when any service is needed. The cabinet should never be opened for any reason.
  • Secure placement or installation is the owner’s responsibility. YAMAHA shall not be liable for any accident caused by improper placement or installation of speakers.

PLACING THE SPEAKERS

Better stereo images will be obtained when the speakers are slightly angled in toward the listeners.

Using as main speakers in a multi-channel system
Position the speakers on both sides of the TV. The positioning of speakers is important because it controls the whole sound quality of a multi-channel system. Set up the speakers on the basis of your listening position by following the owner’s manual supplied with your amplifier.

Note
These speakers feature a magnetically shielded design, but there is still a chance that placing them too close to a TV set might impair picture color. Should this happen, move the speakers away from the TV set.

CONNECTIONS TO YOUR AMPLIFIER

Before making connections, make sure that the amplifier is switched off. Connections

  • Connect the input terminals at the rear of the speakers to the speaker output terminals of the amplifier (or receiver) with the provided speaker cables.
  • Connect the (+) terminals on both the amplifier (or receiver) and the speakers using one side of the cable. Connect the (–) terminals on both components using the other side of the cable.
  • Connect one speaker to the left (marked L) terminals of the amplifier (or receiver) , and another speaker to the right (marked R) terminals, making sure not to reverse the polarity (+, –). If one speaker is connected with reversed polarity, the sound will be unnatural and lack bass.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Are these speakers available and in stock?
You mean, like, available here, on Amazon, or, like, available, as in, like, marriage, and in stock, like, in beef or member chicken stock, like, for cooking? I don’t get it.
  • How loud do they get without distorting?
The speakers can take 140 watts but my amplifier only puts out 100 watts. There is no distortion at full power.
  • Are these speakers in wood?
Even the best speakers are made with MDF, Medium Density Fiberboard. The higher-end speakers just have better internal bracing which makes for a stronger cabinet and they may use a higher quality MDF as well. They also have nice, real wood veneers applied to the shell.
  • Is this speaker match with the Yamaha R-S201 receiver?
. I used these speakers with a Yamaha AV Receiver (RX-V575) and they were fine. However, although I’ve not heard any of the Natural Sound range for a while, I know they can sound quite good, so I am not sure the 6490s would be a good match. However, they will work (crocodile clips on the speakers, so you’ll need bare wire on the speaker end).
  • These speakers are listed at 140 watts. is that total, or per channel? my current system is 150 w total, 2 x 70w ftc, 6 ω, 60khz-12.5khz 10% thd.?
140 watts per speaker. My husband has 4 of these. My husband loves these speakers. They sound deep and very excellent quality. Well worth the investment. My husband paid $120 per pair. He says they are worth the $150 a pair also. But we watch for sales. These will not disappoint.
  • Are these speakers in wood?
No, they are typically constructed of what is called in the audio speaker construction industry as standard MDF(medium density fiberboard); do-it-yourselfers constructing their own speakers from scratch can buy the MDF by the sheet at one local Home Depot/ Lowes also as well.
  • Are there any good for gaming?
I listen to these speakers for hours almost every day sometimes quite loud. They always sound great so I imagine that they would be just fine for gaming.
  • Can you share tips on installing a 3-way crossover and maybe a video on how it sounds? Does it make a big difference?
Sorry I missed this question when it came out. Yes, it does make a big difference. I installed a real 3-way crossover and listened to side by side with the stock version. Huge improvement! The stock setup just puts a low-end cap on the mid and tweeter to keep low frequencies out. Otherwise, all three drivers are full range! When all three hit the same notes it can be quite harsh. No video but I can send a photo of the installation if anyone wants to see it.
  • Do these come with speaker wire?
Speaker wire does not come with the speakers, you have to purchase them separately. You can buy them on Amazon.com, make sure you get the 100 ft wire. The thicker the wire, the better he sounds. The thin cheap wire will not give your Speakers quality sound.
  • Is it compatible with Pyle 3000 watts amplifier?
You should match the OHM’s . If the amp uses 8ohms use 8ohms speaker. One of the woofers blew out after three months. The Woofers could take 70RMS . The cabinets were solid so I went online to Parts Express. I got 2 Eminence 150RMS- 300max speakers for $120.00.
