Bike Activation

Important updates for your store
Dear Specialized retailers,
We are making improvements to the way you prepare, handover and service our Turbo bikes to enhance the rider`s purchasing and servicing experience. Please make sure this communication and SU training modules are shared with ALL store staff ahead of October 2024. Some of these enhancements were released on the 17th of September, whereas others will come early October. We recommend you take some time to walk your store through these updates and if you have any questions your local Specialized representative will be able to support you.

BIKE ACTIVATION

What is Bike Activation
With Bike Activation, we bring our riders a personalized onboarding experience tailored specifically for their new Specialized bike, ensuring your riders understand how to get the most out of their bike. Providing your riders with all the necessary knowledge, boosting their satisfaction and confidence in their new bike. This personalized approach strengthens the bond between you and your riders, encouraging repeat business tied with the set service interval reminders. By following the bike activation flow, you’ll benefit from accurate warranty start dates, sparing your riders the need to upload their proof of purchase.
Bike Activation adds a crucial layer of security for your store. Without activation or test mode, the bike’s motor support is disabled, deterring potential thieves and giving you peace of mind. It will also lead to a required record of a component change with Turbo Studio when exchanging parts while servicing the bike. Without a component change, there will be no motor support or system function.

Initial Update

After unboxing the bike, it will initially be in “Turtle” mode, indicated by the turtle symbol on the bike display when turned on, signifying motor support is restricted; in this state, there will be no motor support, only the walk assist will function). To remove turtle mode, connect the bike to Turbo Studio and proceed with the necessary bike firmware update instructions. After the initial bike update, the bike display will automatically switch to showing the QR code.

Handover

The Handover process involves transferring the Specialized bike from you, the retailer, to the rider. During this process, you will guide the rider through a step-by-step onboarding procedure to ensure a comprehensive understanding of their new bike. This includes setting up and activating the bike while explaining its key features and some best practices, giving peace of mind and boosting their confidence.
Note: Activation of the bike is contingent upon the completion of the Handover service.

Shop Floor Mode

When a Turbo bike arrives at the store, it will initially display Turtle mode on the MasterMind display. After the initial bike update, the bike will automatically switch to Shop Floor mode.
In Shop Floor Mode, when a rider turns on the bike, a QR code will appear on the MasterMind display. Riders can dismiss this QR code by pressing down on the joystick (remote), allowing them to preview the display as it would appear during riding. Scanning the QR code directs them to the app or to the app store (Google Play for Android, App Store for iOS) to download it. Riders can connect to the bike but cannot access the full app functionality, unless the retailer enables Test Mode. Having the bike in Shop Floor Mode is also beneficial for retailers to deter theft, as the bike lacks motor support until the handover service is completed or Test mode is enabled.

Test Mode

Test mode allows riders to access full bike support and app functionality for a customizable duration. It’s ideal for bike testing, events or rentals.
To manage Test mode settings, retailers can adjust the Test mode duration, extend, shorten, or deactivate Test mode entirely. These adjustments can be made when connected to the bike using the Specialized app or via Turbo Studio under the ‘Test and Activate’ tab. Please note that setting and editing Test mode settings are exclusive to retailers. To adjust the Test mode settings in the Specialized app, you should use your same login credentials as you use for Turbo Studio or B2B. Once the test period expires, when the bike is next turned off, the bike will revert to Shop Floor mode (showing the QR code).

Activation

Bike Activation can only occur after the handover service is complete. Once that is done, there are two ways of activating the bike:

  • Rider via Specialized app – view steps below
  • Retailers on behalf of the rider via Turbo Studio – view steps below

We would like the riders to perform the activation, so please encourage your riders to go through the Specialized app flow. In case they cannot, or do not want to use the app, you can use Turbo Studio alternatively.
Activating the bike will enable the bike’s motor support, start the warranty of the bike and brings other rider benefits.

Which bikes support Activation
This innovative feature is exclusively available for new Turbo Bike systems introduced from October 2024 onwards.
