  5. If any of the device cabling becomes frayed, cut, or disconnected in any way, turn the power Off and do not operate until inspected, repaired, and/or replaced.

General Warnings

WARNING!

  1. Do not open or tamper with the CTRL+5 enclosure. Tampering could cause the internal circuit to fail.
  2. Do not tamper with fasteners on the CTRL+5 unless performing routine maintenance.
  3. Ensure mounting hardware is hand-tight.
  4. Check mounting hardware every month to ensure it is hand-tight.
  5. The wire harness from the CTRL+5 should not be loose or in the way of the seat functions. Ensure that wires are not pinched as the power chair is actuated.
  6. This product is intended for a single user.
  7. Always use parts and/or accessories that have been recommended or approved by Sunrise Medical when servicing this chair.
  8. Never pull on cables. This can result in wires breaking inside the connector or harness. To remove a plug or connector, always grasp the plug or connector itself.
  9. If a button on the CTRL+5 is accidentally pushed that function will become active.
  10. Do not reuse any mounting hardware including fasteners.
  11. Product labeling may fall off due to environmental heat, sun exposure, or moisture. Contact your Sunrise Medical authorized dealer for a new label if this occurs.
  12. Ensure the powerchair is off when not in use.
  13.  Ensure the powerchair is off when operating a motor vehicle.
  14.  Ensure not to hit, lean on, or hang things from your CTRL+5.
  15. Do not use your chair in a shower, pool, or other body of water.
  16. Avoid excess moisture (for example, do not leave your device in a damp bathroom while taking a shower).
  17. Dry your device immediately if it gets damp, or if you use water to clean it.
  18. Avoid contact with salt or salty conditions as this may cause damage to the device.

Safety Warnings

Safety: Temperature

WARNING!

  1. If you do not use the CTRL+5, ensure that it is not exposed to direct sunlight for lengthy periods. Certain parts of the CTRL+5, such as the keypad, the cable, and the enclosure can become hot or brittle if they have been exposed to full sunlight for too long. This may cause burns to the skin or render the CTRL+5 inoperable.
  2. Extended sun exposure can result in product labels becoming discolored, illegible, or falling off.

Safety: Electromagnetic radiation

CAUTION!

  • The standard version of your CTRL+5 device has been tested on the applicable requirements of electromagnetic radiation (EMC requirements). Despite these tests.
  • It cannot be excluded that electromagnetic radiation may influence the CTRL+5.

For example:

  1. Mobile telephones.
  2. Large scale medical apparatus.
  3. Other sources of electromagnetic radiation.
    • It cannot be excluded that the CTRL+5 may interfere with electromagnetic fields.

For example:

  1. Shop doors.
  2. Commercial and/or residential alarm systems.
  3. Garage door openers.
    • If an EMC event occurs there may be unintended operation of your device.
    • In the unlikely event that such problems do occur, we request that you notify your Sunrise Medical authorized dealer immediately.

Safety: Choking hazard

DANGER! This mobility aid uses small parts which under certain circumstances may present a choking hazard to young children.

Safety: Assignable controls

  • WARNING! It is possible to assign a function to an input control (buttons, jacks) to your seating system. If controls have been assigned to perform a dual or alternate function, ensure you know how each control operates.
  • Please contact your Sunrise Medical authorized dealer or the Sunrise Medical technical service department if you do not receive this information. Failure to do so may result in product or property damage and/or injury.

Maintenance Tips

The wheelchair’s lifespan is dependent on it being well maintained. For information concerning specific settings, maintenance, or repair work, please contact your Sunrise Medical authorized dealer.

Storage Tips:

WARNING!

  1. Store your device in a clean, dry area. If you fail to do so, parts may rust or corrode.
  2. Before using your device, ensure it is in proper working order.
  3. If you store the device for more than three months, have it inspected by a Sunrise Medical authorized dealer before use.

Cleaning and disinfecting:

  1. The CTRL+5 should be wiped down once per week.
  2. If a foreign substance is present wipe down with a slightly damp (not wet) cloth.
  3. Ensure that you dry all parts of the device prior to use.
  4. Ensure you clean your device regularly. This will help you find loose or worn parts. If you find loose, damaged, or worn parts, replace them before use.

CAUTION! Ensure that you dry all parts of the device if it becomes wet or damp, such as when cleaning, or if it is used in a wet or damp environment.

CAUTION!

  1. Do not use solvents, bleaches, or abrasives. synthetic detergents, wax polishes, or aerosols.
  2. Disinfectants may be used in dilution as specified by the manufacturer.
  3. Ensure surfaces are rinsed with clean water and dried thoroughly.

Hygiene measures when being re-used:

  • Prior to the wheelchair being re-used, it must be carefully prepared. All surfaces which come into contact with the user must be treated with a disinfection spray.
  • To do this, you must use a disinfectant as authorized/recommended in your country, for rapid alcohol-based disinfection for medical products and medical devices, which must be disinfected quickly.
  • Please be aware of the manufacturer’s instructions for the disinfectant you are using.
  • In general, a complete disinfection cannot be guaranteed on seams.
  • We, therefore, recommend that you dispose of the seat and back slings to avoid micro-bacterial contamination with active agents according to your local infection protection law.

Conditions For Safe Storage

  • Products should be stored in a dry place: at 20 – 75% Relative Humidity.
  • Protect from direct sunlight and dust for long periods.
  • Away from direct heat and at a temperature between 5°C (40°F) to 40°C (104°F)
  • Position and stack the packaged products according to the “this side up” arrows on the packaging.
  • If a package is high and narrow and therefore potentially unstable, ensure it is well secured on the pallet or in the racking, to prevent it from falling down.
  • Do not stack anything on top of the packaged products when the “do not stack” mark on the packaging is shown.
  • Products should never be stored outside and subject to the elements.

System Pre-check

Before each use perform the following:

  1. Ensure the powerchair is on and charged.
  2. Ensure buttons are programmed to the desired intended function.
  3. To ensure buttons are programmed as intended, press each button to verify functionality.
  4. Ensure the label above the keypad matches the functionality of the button.

Product Description

  • The Switch-It CTRL+5® is a switch box device that plugs into the PG Drives R-Net system and allows for the set up of a maximum of ten different functions in ten discrete buttons (each switch is two buttons). The CTRL+5 switches are pre-programmed from the factory to default values for the actuators on the chairs. The Sunrise Medical patented Assignable Buttons option allows the button assignments to be changed to any of the Assignable Buttons functions to best suit each unique user.
  • The system allows for having two standard CTRL+5 devices or one standard CTRL+5 and one CTRL+5 with Remote Seating on the same power wheelchair, if desired, for a total of up to 20 diff erent functions in twenty discrete buttons.
  • The intended lifetime of this product is 5 years.

Compatibility

  1. Penny & Giles R-Net Electronics required. Power wheelchairs must have an assignable buttons feature.
  2. In order to use the Switch-It Remote Seating app with your powerchair you must have the Remote Seating enabled CTRL+5 (Part Numbers 247375 and 247376) and a complex seating module (CxSM, with software version 5.0 or greater).

  • Customizable access – patented Assignable Button (option) technology and programming, with the use of the power wheelchair dealer’s PC Programmer and dongle, provide the user with direct access to up to 20 diff erent functions (10 per CTRL+5).
  • The CTRL+5 may be mounted in several ways for convenient access to seat function controls.
    1. Armrest mount (cover picture).

    4. The CTRL+5 has a built-in USB port for charging or powering peripheral devices (Fig. 5). The current is limited to 2.0 Amps, which is sufficient to charge most smartphones and tablets.SWITCH-IT-CTRL+5-Switch-for-Wheelchairs-FIG-11
  • The port is also on a pigtail so it can be moved from one side to the other depending on how the user prefers to access it.

Installation and Programming

Install the CTRL+5 in a location that is easy for the intended user to access. Only a Sunrise Medical authorized dealer should install this product.

Indicators

The behavior of the indicators is dependent on the seating module in the system.

  1. With an Intelligent Seating Module (ISM) the indicators (Fig. 6) will all be green or yellow.SWITCH-IT-CTRL+5-Switch-for-Wheelchairs-FIG-12
    • a. Yellow indicates a drive inhibit is acve, and green indicates there is no drive inhibit.
    • b. All white indicators mean the module has not connected with the powerchair.
  2. With a Complex Seating Module (CxSM) the indicators (Fig. 6) are linked to the button below them.
    • a. When a button is assigned to any other option but seating, the light will be solid white.
    • b. When a button is assigned to a seating Memory axis, and that axis is running, the light will be blinking green.
    • c. When a button is assigned to a seating Memory axis and a drive inhibit occurs, the LED will change to the drive inhibit color once the axis is stopped.
    • d. When a button is assigned to a seating Memory axis other than a Memory axis, the drive inhibit color change will happen when the inhibit happens.
    • e. The LED color will be Red for a lockout drive inhibit.
    • f. When a button is assigned to any seating axis and no actuator channel within that axis has called for a drive inhibit, the LED color will be green.

Programming Assignable Buttons

  1. Changing the assignable buttons of the CTRL+5 should only be done by a Sunrise Medical authorized dealer.

  3. Read Chair into the programmer by clicking on the blue down arrow in the toolbar, shown on the right.
  4. Open the Switch-It folder and the module you wish to change. Figure 7 shows Button 1 of module 1 is assigned to Speed Up and Speed Down.SWITCH-IT-CTRL+5-Switch-for-Wheelchairs-FIG-13
  5. To change this, double-click on the current assignment. In this case, you would double-click on the “Speed Up” text. This brings up the window as shown in Figure 8.SWITCH-IT-CTRL+5-Switch-for-Wheelchairs-FIG-14

  7. Continue this process until all buttons have the desired function.
  8. Now click the upload button, shown on the right.
  9. Now power cycle the chair. Your new assignments are now updated.

Different Configurations Offered

  1. Press the toggle buttons outlined with a red “X” as pictured and the following buttons will be reassigned according to the following tables.SWITCH-IT-CTRL+5-Switch-for-Wheelchairs-FIG-17
  2. To reset the CTRL+5 back to the memory positions that were assigned before the above changes, complete the following step:
    • a. Hold down the two far buttons and then press the top button in the fourth row as shown on the right. This will bring back the functionality of the CTRL+5, before the change.SWITCH-IT-CTRL+5-Switch-for-Wheelchairs-FIG-18

Troubleshooting

  • Issue: The powerchair hourglass shows on display and does not go away.
  • Solution:
    1. Turn the chair off.
    2. Unplug CTRL+5.
    3. Plug in CTRL+5.
    4. Turn the chair on.
  • Issue: New button assignments are not loading on the device.
  • Solution:
    1. Turn the chair off.
    2. Unplug CTRL+5.
    3. Plug in CTRL+5.
    4. Power cycle (turn off and turn back on) the chair and retry button assignments to ensure they function as intended.
  • Issue: Control lights stay on when a chair is off.
  • Solution:
    1. Turn the chair off.
    2. Unplug CTRL+5.
    3. Plug in CTRL+5.
    4. Turn the chair on.

Warranty

Each Switch-It device is carefully inspected and tested to provide peak performance. Every Switch-It device is covered under a limited, express warranty.

  1. All electronic components are covered under warranty for twelve (12) months from the date of shipment, provided normal use, unless modified or damaged.
  2. All mounting hardware is covered under warranty for twelve (12) months from the date of shipment, provided normal use, unless modified or damaged
  3. All wearable items (covers, pads, etc.) are covered under warranty for three (3) months from the date of shipment, provided normal use, unless modified or damaged.
  • Warranty claims should be processed through the nearest Sunrise Medical authorized dealer. A Return Authorization number must be obtained prior to returning the item for evaluation, along with details of the issue.
  • Items returned for a warranty claim must be evaluated by Switch-It before warranty determination is made. Should a defect in materials or workmanship occur during the warranty period, and the item has not been modified or damaged, Switch-It will, at its option, rework or replace it without charge.
  • Except for express warranties made herein, all other warranties, including implied warranties of merchantability and warranties of fitness for a particular purpose are excluded. There is no implied warranty beyond what is contained herein.
  • Remedies for breach of express warranties herein are limited to rework or replacement of the goods. In no event shall damages for breach of any warranty include any consequential damages or exceed the cost of non-conforming goods sold.SWITCH-IT-CTRL+5-Switch-for-Wheelchairs-FIG-19

  • The varieties of fitting variants, as well as the modular design, mean that it can be used by those who cannot walk or have limited mobility because of:
  • Paralysis
  • Loss of extremity (leg amputation)
  • Extremity defect deformity
  • Joint contractures/joint injuries
  • Illnesses such as heart and circulation deficiencies, disturbance of equilibrium, or cachexia as well as for elderly people who still have strength in the upper body.
