Parts Needed
- Headshell
- Cartridge
- Mounting Hardware
- Cartridge Alignment Protractor
- Mini Flat-Tip Screwdriver
- Needle Nose Pliers
Removing the Installed Cartridge
- Secure the tonearm and install the stylus protector to prevent accidental damage to the stylus.
Note: Step 2 and 3 can be skipped if using a spare headshell for the new cartridge. Retrolife headshells are available at: https://retrolifeplayer.com/collections/turntable-stylus/products/turntable-needle-4pcs
- Use the flat-tip screwdriver to loosen the screws on top of the headshell and remove the cartridge.
- Using the needle nose pliers carefully disconnect the wires from the cartridge. Once fully disconnected store the cartridge and screws in a safe location.
Mounting Your New Cartridge
- Connect the headshell wires to the posts on the cartridge. Ensure the correct color is connected to the correct post.
Wire Channel White Left (+) Blue Left (-) Red
Right (+) Green
Right (-) - Position the cartridge mounting holes under the slots on the headshell. Using the screws provided with your cartridge, affix the cartridge to the headshell. Do not over-tighten.
Balancing the Tonearm
Important:
Complete all tonearm balancing steps; improper balancing may damage the stylus and records. For further assistance, scan the YouTube QR code fora tutorial video ofthis process.
Remove the stylus protector.
- Unlock the tonearm and lift the cueing lever.
- Position the tonearm over the platter.
- Hold the headshell and lower the cueing lever completely. Protect the stylus from touching the platter.
- With the cueing lever now lowered, turn the entire counter weight until the tonearm is balanced and floating horizontally when headshell is released.
- Set only the counterweight indicator ring to “0” on the center line while keeping the tonearm balanced then lock the tonearm on the tonearm rest.
Setting the Tracking Weight
- Rotate the entire counterweight counterclockwise until the indicator ring is set to the recommended tracking force of the new cartridge.
Example: The ATN-3600L uses 3.5 gram tracking force.Tip: When setting the counterweight make sure you are turning the entire weight and not just the counterweight indicator ring.
Aligning the Cartridge
Correct cartridge alignment ensures the stylus is positioned properly relative to the grooves on the record. Incorrect alignment can cause distortion and can also cause unwanted wear and tear on your stylus.
