CHERRY TOMATO BLOCK CUTTING INSTRUCTIONS:
The cutting instructions below list the amounts needed to make one Cherry Tomato Block. To make multiple blocks, multiply the quantity listed for each piece by the number of blocks you plan to make. For example, if you’re making 13 Cherry Tomato Blocks, multiply the single block quantity for Piece A1 by 13, so you would cut (13) A1 pieces in total.
FROM THE TOMATO FABRIC, CUT:
A1 | (1) 6 1/2” x 4 1/2” |
B2 | (2) 2 1/4” x 1 1/2” |
C3 | (4) 1” squares |
FROM THE LEAF FABRIC, CUT:
D4 | (1) 4” x 1” |
E5 | (2) 1 3/4” x 1 1/2” |
F6 | (1) 1” x 1 1/4” |
FROM THE BACKGROUND FABRIC, CUT:
G7 | (1) 10” x 2” |
H8 | (1) 10” x 2 1/4 |
I9 | (2) 2 1/4” x 6 3/4” |
J1 | (2) 2” squares |
K2 | (2) 2” x 1 1/4” |
L3 | (4) 1 3/4” squares |
M4 | (2) 1” squares |

DIAGONAL SEAM INSTRUCTIONS:
1. Using a water soluble pen or pencil, draw a diagonal line from one corner to the opposite corner on the backside of a square piece of fabric. Place this square in the corner of a larger rectangle or square piece of fabric, RST. It is important to pay attention to the direction of the marked line. The line should intersect with two edges of the fabric underneath it.
2. With the two pieces RST, carefully sew along the marked line from one corner to the opposite corner.
3. Trim 1/4″ away from the sewn line.
4. With a hot, dry iron press the seam as instructed.
ASSEMBLING THE CHERRY TOMATO BLOCK:
1. Sew diagonal seams with two C3 pieces and one E5 piece, RST, as illustrated in Figure A. Press the seams toward the E5 pieces (Figure A).
2. Sew diagonal seams with two C3 pieces and one E5 piece, RST, as illustrated in Figure B. Press the seams toward the C3 pieces (Figure B).
3. Sew a Figure A unit to the left side of a Figure B unit, RST. Press the seam open.
4. Sew a B2 piece to the left and right sides of the Step 3 unit, RST. Press the seams toward the B2 pieces (Figure C).

An example of how you can incorporate the Cherry Tomato Block in the Chance of Rain quilt!
The Chance of Rain quilt pattern is available at penandpaperpatterns.com!
TIP: To make the quilt shown on the right, only cut the Flower Block pieces (C, P, Q, R, S, T, and U) from the Chance of Rain pattern, regardless of which size (Baby, Large Throw, or Twin) you’re making. You’ll also need to cut the Cherry Tomato Block pieces using this pattern to complete your quilt.
The Cherry Tomato Quilt mock up was made in Kona solids. The name of those solids are:
Cedar, Persimmon, Artichoke, Peach, Thistle, and Shell.
