Product Usage Instructions

Surfaces Preparation
Before beginning your landscape painting, ensure that the surfaces are properly prepared. Apply two layers of primer, allowing each layer to dry completely before adding the next layer.

Palettes
For oil painters, a glass palette is provided with the product. However, you are encouraged to bring your own preferred palette if you have one.

  • Can I use different brands of materials for this painting?
    Yes, while the suggested brand names are ‘italicized’, you are welcome to use similar products and brands from other stores.
  • Do I need to apply additional layers on the surfaces?
    Yes, it is recommended to add 2 more layers to the surfaces, ensuring each layer dries between applications.

While all materials can be found at Opus Art Supplies, similar products and brands from other stores are welcome. Suggested brand names are ‘italicized’. Additional materials are also welcome.

WHAT WE PROVIDE

Easels, side tables, chairs & stools, containers for liquids, masking tape, saran wrap.

SURFACE

  • 2 Surfaces: any size between 8” x 10” to 12” x 16” (bring one surface to 1st class)
  • Stretched canvas is preferred. Canvas board or gessoed hardboard panel (aka ‘Artboard’ or ‘Ampersand’) are also welcome.
  • This surface require a total of 3 layers of acrylic white gesso. With pre-gessoed surfaces, please add 2 more layers, allowing to dry between layers.

PAINT

Oils are recommended, but acrylics or water-based oils are welcome. We suggest using artist-grade vs. student-grade paint.

  • Titanium White / Cadmium Yellow Lemon (or Cadmium Yellow Light) / Yellow Ochre / Cadmium Red Light (or any bright red) / Alizarin Crimson (or Permanent Alizarin) / Burnt Umber / Ultramarine Blue / Sap Green
  • Optional: Green Gold, Phthalo Blue, Cobalt Blue

MEDIUM

  • For Oil Painters: Linseed Oil + OMS (Odourless Mineral Spirits)
    • Use Gamblin’s ‘Gamsol’ only! Please do not bring other brands or turpentine
    • Bring an extra glass jar + lid to store excess dirty OMS after class
  • For Acrylic Painters:
    • Bring a small spray water bottle to keep your paint wet
    • Acrylic ‘Retarder’ to extend drying time

BRUSHES

Please bring whatever brushes you enjoy working with in a range of shapes and sizes.
We recommend the following long-handled brushes:

  • Synthetic Flat or Angled: sizes 4, 6, and 8 (1 of each)
  • 1 Bristle Filbert: any size between 10 and 12
  • 1 or more Synthetic Round: between size 0 and 4

PALETTES

  • For Oil Painters:
    A glass palette is provided, although you are welcome to bring your own
  • For Acrylic Painters:
    • It is recommended to use a ‘Masterson Sta-Wet’ palette (16″ x 12”): Click HERE

ADDITIONAL ITEMS

  • Graphite pencil (2B or HB is fine)
  • One kneadable eraser
  • Palette Knife: ‘Liquitex’ Small Painting Knife #5

  • Painting can be messy, please bring suitable clothing.

OPTIONAL

  • Gloves While Painting: Latex or ‘Gorilla Grip’ gloves (breathable + waterproof)
  • Gloves for Brush Cleaning: Waterproof rubber gloves are recommended.
  • Sketchbook 8.5” x 11” or smaller for taking notes
  • Mahl stick
