Intended Use The USB Recovery Stick UEFI is intended to be used for creating and restoring Symantec GhostTM Images of Microsoft Windows Operating Systems on the Advantech devices defined in manual section Scope. As images can’t be created/restored online, the USB Flash drive (UFD) is bootable and intended to be used this way. As operating system the Windows Pre-Installation Environment (WinPE) is used. 2.2. Scope 2.2.1. NOTICE: Physical damage Functionality of the Advantech USB Recovery Stick UEFI can only be guaranteed using the GhostTM software version 12.0.0.10514 or 12.0.0.11566. Always use one of these versions for creating and restoring images with the Advantech USB Recovery Stick UEFI. Using the USB Recovery Stick UEFI The USB Recovery Stick UEFI is intended to be used for creating and restoring Symantec GhostTM Images of Microsoft Windows Operating Systems on the Advantech devices defined in manual section Scope. As images can’t be created/restored online, the USB Flash drive (UFD) is bootable and intended to be used this way. As operating system the Windows Pre-Installation Environment (WinPE) is used. To boot an Advantech device from the UFD the stick has to be connected to an USB port. Therefore, it might be necessary to remove the cable cover respectively the antenna cap. An USB keyboard will be necessary too. After booting a device from the UFD the user will be guided through a simple full screen menu. 3.1. Choosing this menu item gives more flexibility respectively full control over Symantec GhostTM. Through this menu item WinPE will be shut down. Automatic image backup/restore with Symantec GhostTM Figure 3.3: Restore image or create image Item Restore Image Create Image Back to Main Menu Description Via this menu item only an image file has to be chosen for restore. Via this menu item only an image file name has to be specified for backup creation. This button will be grayed out and not clickable if no partition on the storage medium could be found during boot up. Create image Using the USB Recovery Stick UEFI Figure 3.4: Create image A path and filename for the image to be created must be specified. As default path the IMAGES folder on the root directory of the UFD is used. For filename input a USB keyboard has to be connected to the device. Restore image Figure 3.8: Restore image A Symantec GhostTM file with the extension .gho has to be chosen for restore. By default, the IMAGES folder on the root directory of the UFD is opened for browsing. Using the USB Recovery Stick UEFI In some cases, it might not be possible or useful to choose the Automatic backup/restore process. E.g., if an image with more than one partition is to be restored and the size of the partitions has to be specified exactly or if an image has to be restored on another storage medium than the primary boot medium. In this case the Symantec GhostTM software can be fully operated by choosing the Manual image backup/restore menu option.
