nVent RAYCHEM RayStat-M2

Electronic Controller for Ice and Snow Melting

Product Overview

The nVent RAYCHEM RayStat-M2 is an electronic controller designed for economical ice and snow melting on outdoor areas and in gutters. It detects temperature and moisture to activate snow melting systems only when snow or ice is present, ensuring energy efficiency. The RayStat-M2 is suitable for controlling electric heating cables.

Product Range

  • RayStat-M2: Thermostat/Controller.
  • RayStat-M2-G-Sensor: Ground sensor for detecting temperature and moisture in outdoor areas.
  • RayStat-M2-R-Sensor: Gutter sensor for detecting moisture, for gutters and downpipes.
  • RayStat-M2-A-Sensor: Ambient temperature sensor, for wall mounting.

Installation Guidelines

Important Safety Instructions: Always disconnect the power supply before installation or maintenance. Installation should only be performed by qualified electricians in accordance with local regulations.

Sensor Installation

  • Ground Sensor (G-Sensor): For outdoor surfaces prone to ice and snow. Embed horizontally, flush with the surface. Protect cable with pipes. Use provided installation plate.
  • Roof Sensor (R-Sensor): For gutters or downpipes on the sunny side of the building. Ensure contact elements face meltwater flow. Do not connect pink (2) and grey (1) wires. Detailed instructions are supplied with the sensor.
  • Outdoor Temperature Sensor (A-Sensor): For use with R-Sensor or separately for temperature detection. Mount on the wall under eaves on the north side of the building.

Sensor Cables: Cables are typically 10m and can be extended up to 200m (G/R-Sensor) or 50m (A-Sensor) using standard installation cable. Install cables according to regulations and avoid running them parallel to power cables to prevent interference.

Controller Installation

Mount the control unit on a DIN-rail in an approved panel. Connect supply voltage to terminals 1 and 2. Ensure electrical installation complies with local regulations.

Setup and Programming

The RayStat-M2 can be configured for ice and snow melting using G-Sensors for outdoor areas or R-Sensor and A-Sensor for gutters/downpipes.

Programming Sensitivity

Follow these steps:

  1. Turn off power.
  2. Bridge terminals 8-9 and 10-11 with wires.
  3. Set TIME SET to maximum (constant on) and TEMP SET to maximum (10).
  4. Turn power on; the ON LED will flash. Factory settings are indicated by constant TEMP, MOIST, RELAY LEDs.
  5. Adjust sensitivity using the TIME SET knob (1=min, 5=max). LED combinations indicate the programmed sensitivity.
  6. Turn power off, set desired temperature (TEMP SET) and after-run time (TIME SET).
  7. Remove bridge wires.
  8. Install sensors normally.

Refer to the LED indicator table for sensitivity levels.
