5 Branches of Sustainable Product Development at HONOR
HONOR's approach to sustainable product development is structured around five key branches:
- Environment: Assessing and minimizing environmental impact.
- Restricted Substances: Adhering to and exceeding regulations on hazardous materials.
- Energy Efficiency: Designing products for low power consumption.
- Materials: Selecting recyclable and low-carbon materials.
- Recycling: Facilitating the end-of-life management of devices.
Environmental Impact
Carbon Footprint
HONOR's smart devices undergo lifecycle assessment (LCA) based on ISO 14040 and ISO 14044 methodologies. Data from the product bill of material (BOM), energy consumption, distribution, usage scenarios, and disposal are collected and modeled using SimaPro software to determine potential environmental impact.
The HONOR 400 Pro has a product carbon footprint (PCF) of 57.6 kg CO2e, based on the configuration of 12GB RAM and 512GB ROM. The assessment considers a 3-year usage period, including accessories and packaging. The breakdown of the PCF across different lifecycle stages is as follows:
- Raw Material & Manufacturing: 82.92%
- Mobile Phone Assembly: 1.66%
- Distribution: 5.33%
- Consumer Use: 9.86%
- End of Life Disposal: 0.22%
Note: Results depend on assessment method, scoping, and assumptions, and may not be directly comparable with those from other parties.
Restricted Substances
Restrictions of Hazardous Substances
HONOR complies with European directives such as RoHS (2011/65/EU), REACH (Regulation No 1907/2006), EU Battery Directive (2006/66/EC), and EU Packaging Directive (94/62/EC). Furthermore, HONOR restricts the use of additional harmful substances not yet regulated:
- BFR (Brominated Flame Retardants) free
- CFR (Chlorinated Flame Retardants) free
- PVC free
- Arsenic- free display glass
- Antimony trioxide free***
- Beryllium (and its compounds) free
These measures aim to reduce environmental impact and promote material recycling.
***Except for the use of antimony trioxide in ceramic and glass components.
Energy Efficiency
Power Efficiency
The HONOR 400 Pro utilizes power-efficient components and software for intelligent power management, reducing greenhouse gas emissions during the device's use phase. The device and its recommended charger meet the energy efficiency requirements of EU ErP Directive (EU) 2019/1782 and Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/826.
Materials
Material Selection & Recyclability
Minimized materials are used in the product and packaging, with most materials being recyclable. The packaging and manual are printed using soy ink. To reduce CO2 emissions, HONOR incorporates low-carbon materials, including recycled and bio-based materials. For instance, the mainboard frame uses post-consumer recycled plastic (approx. 30% content), and bio-based plastic (approx. 30% content) is used in the sidekey-latch-assy and poke needle.
HONOR 400 Pro Material Overview:
- Metals: 27.54%
- Plastics: 10.89%
- Glass & Ceramics: 15.73%
- Battery: 34.93%
- Circuit Board: 5.96%
- Others: 4.96%
Recycling
A New Life for Devices
HONOR minimizes material waste at the end of life through ultracompact, ease-to-disassembly, and environmentally friendly design. Recyclable materials are used, ensuring minimal waste goes to landfill after professional recycling. HONOR cooperates with qualified third-party recycling companies for trade-in services, a project initially launched in China and planned for expansion to other countries.
