5 Branches of Sustainable Product Development at HONOR
HONOR focuses on five key areas for sustainable product development:
- Environment
- Restricted Substances
- Energy Efficiency
- Materials
- Recycling
Environmental Impact
Carbon Footprint
Honor's smart devices are assessed using lifecycle assessment (LCA) methodology according to ISO 14040 and ISO 14044. Data is collected on the product bill of material (BOM), energy consumption, distribution, usage scenario, and disposal, modeled using SimaPro software to determine potential environmental impact throughout the product lifecycle.
The product carbon footprint (PCF) for the HONOR 400 Lite, based on an 8GB RAM and 256GB ROM configuration, is 50.9 kg CO2e. This assessment, using SimaPro Version 9.6.0.1, considers a functional unit of 3 years of smartphone usage, including accessories and packaging. The breakdown of the impact across different life cycle stages is as follows:
- Raw Material & Manufacturing: 83.89%
- Mobile Phone Assembly: 1.28%
- Distribution: 5.13%
- Consumer Use: 9.49%
- End of Life Disposal: 0.21%
Note: Results depend on assessment methods, scoping, and assumptions, and may not be directly comparable with other parties' assessments.
Restricted Substances
Restrictions of Hazardous Substances
HONOR complies with European directives such as the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive (2011/65/EU), REACH (Regulation No 1907/2006), EU Battery Directive (2006/66/EC), and EU Packaging Directive (94/62/EC). Furthermore, HONOR restricts the use of additional harmful substances beyond regulatory requirements, including:
- BFR (Brominated Flame Retardants) free
- CFR (Chlorinated Flame Retardants) free
- PVC free
- Arsenic- free display glass
- Antimony trioxide free (except in ceramic and glass components)
- Beryllium (and its compounds) free
These measures aim to reduce environmental impact and promote material resource recycling.
Energy Efficiency
Power Efficiency
The HONOR 400 Lite utilizes power-efficient components and software to intelligently manage power consumption, thereby reducing greenhouse gas emissions during the device's use phase. The device and its recommended charger meet the energy efficiency requirements of EU ErP Directive (EU) 2019/1782 and Commission Regulation (EU) 2023/826.
Materials
Material Selection & Recyclability
HONOR minimizes the materials used in the product and packaging, prioritizing recyclability. The packaging is primarily made from highly recyclable fiberboard. To reduce CO2 emissions, sustainable, low-carbon materials are selected, including recycled and biobased materials. For example, the mainboard frame incorporates approximately 30% post-consumer recycled plastic, and the tray-pushrod assembly uses approximately 30% biobased plastic.
HONOR 400 Lite Material Overview:
- Metals: 25.84%
- Plastics: 12.35%
- Glass & Ceramics: 17.09%
- Battery: 34.54%
- Circuit Board: 6.21%
- Others: 3.86%
Recycling
A New Life for Devices
HONOR designs devices for ultracompactness, ease of disassembly, and environmental friendliness to minimize material waste at the end of life. Recyclable materials are used, and landfill waste is minimized through professional recycling. HONOR cooperates with qualified third-party recycling companies to offer trade-in services, initially launched in China and planned for expansion to other countries.
