This document provides detailed information on the Grundfos COMFORT series of circulator pumps.
1. Product Description
The Grundfos COMFORT circulator pumps are designed for efficient circulation of liquids in various systems.

- European Approvals: Marked with VDE and GS certifications, indicating safety and quality standards.
- US Approvals: Certified by UL. Also recognized as a Drinking water system component for NSF/ANSI 61 and NSF/ANSI 372 compliance.
Applications
Grundfos COMFORT circulator pumps are designed for:
- Domestic hot-water systems in single- and two-family houses.
- Small heating systems.
- Cooling and air-conditioning systems.
The pumps are suitable for both open and closed systems and must be installed indoors.
Domestic Hot-Water Systems Diagram Description
Figure 3 illustrates a single-loop system. Figure 4 shows a branched system. Figure 5 depicts a domestic hot-water system with a hot-water storage tank, highlighting the circulation of drinking water, particularly recommending brass pump housings for systems with storage tanks.
Performance Range
The performance range indicates the pump's head (H) and flow rate (Q) capabilities.
- Figure 6 (Outside USA): Shows performance curves for COMFORT 15-14 B, BA, BDT and COMFORT 15-14 BX, BXA, BXDT models operating at 50/60 Hz, 230 V. The graph plots Head (H) in meters and kPa against Flow Rate (Q) in m³/h and l/s.
- Figure 7 (USA): Displays performance curves for COMFORT 10-16 models (e.g., 10-16 T, 10-16 BU) operating at 50/60 Hz, 115/230 V. The graph plots Head (H) in meters and feet against Flow Rate (Q) in US GPM and m³/h.
2. Operating Conditions
Pumped Liquids
The pumps are designed for:
- Thin, clean, non-aggressive, and non-explosive liquids without solid particles or fibers.
- Cooling liquids not containing mineral oil.
- Domestic hot water.
- Softened water.
The pump's hydraulic performance may be reduced with liquids of higher viscosity. For example, 50% glycol at 20°C (68°F) can reduce performance by approximately 15% due to increased viscosity.
Temperatures
- Liquid Temperature Range: 2 to 95°C (36 to 203°F).
- Operating Temperature Recommendation: Around 50°C (122°F) is recommended to minimize lime deposit buildup and be aware of legionella risk.
- Ambient Temperature: Must be lower than the liquid temperature to prevent condensation and not exceed 40°C (104°F).
Pressures
- System Pressure: Maximum system pressure is 1.0 MPa (10 bar / 145 psi) (PN 10).
- Inlet Pressure: A minimum inlet pressure of 0.5 bar (7.3 psi) or 5m head is required at the pump inlet to prevent cavitation and bearing damage.
Pump Location
Pumps must be installed indoors in a non-aggressive and non-explosive atmosphere. Maximum relative humidity is 95%.
3. Functions
COMFORT with AUTOADAPT
Models like COMFORT BA PM and BXA PM feature:
- AUTOADAPT mode
- Temperature control mode
- Continuous 100% mode
AUTOADAPT Mode
This function optimizes operating hours by learning user tapping patterns, ensuring comfort and saving energy. It reduces both electrical energy consumption of the pump and heat energy consumption of the hot-water system. The pump adapts over two weeks, initially operating in temperature mode.
Note: For heating systems with a thermostatic regulating valve, it is recommended to use a COMFORT pump without AUTOADAPT to avoid conflicting control systems. If AUTOADAPT is used, set the thermostatic valve to maximum to disable its regulation.
Control Function
The control function integrates:
- Detection of hot-water consumption via a temperature sensor.
- Event log function to record tapping events.
- Pump control based on logged data and temperature hysteresis.
Disinfection and Flushing: The pump performs a weekly 15-minute disinfection cycle. It also performs a 15-minute flush if it has been switched off for eight hours.
Fault Indication
Defective External Temperature Sensor: If the red error indicator is on and turns off when switching to temperature control mode, the external sensor is likely defective. The pump defaults to temperature control mode.
Defective Internal Temperature Sensor: If the red error indicator remains on when switching to temperature control mode, the internal sensor is defective. The pump then uses the external sensor for temperature control.
Temperature Control Mode for AUTOADAPT (BA, BXA) Variants
Regulation is based on a calculated temperature range, aiming for maximum comfort and energy savings.
Figure 10 illustrates a COMFORT pump in a heat application. Figure 11 shows the temperature control mode, where the pump switches on and off based on preset start (Tstart) and stop (Tstop) temperatures determined by the sensors.
Temperature Control Mode for Temperature Control (T) Variants
The COMFORT T PM variant offers integrated temperature control. It switches the pump off at a preset temperature limit (Toff) and back on at another (Ton). These limits are set automatically. After initial setup or power loss, the pump runs an identification cycle to determine system temperatures and calculate Ton and Toff. This cycle repeats every 12 hours.
- Ton = Tsys - 14°C (57°F)
- Toff = Tsys - 7°C (44°F)
Continuous 100% Mode
The pump operates at full speed continuously without any regulation.
COMFORT with Digital Timer
BDT and BXDT PM models include a digital timer for customized operating periods to optimize comfort and energy savings. Default periods are 6:00-9:00, 11:00-13:00, and 16:00-21:00. Users can select default schedules or create custom ones.
Setting the Pump
Settings are made directly on the pump's operating panel. Quick guides and instructional videos are available via QR codes.
Operating Panel Description (Figure 12)

Note: In case of power failure, the actual time LED (4) blinks, indicating the time setting may need adjustment.
4. Construction
Grundfos COMFORT PM circulator pumps feature various housing versions and lengths, often including integrated isolating and non-return valves. The motor can be separated from the pump housing for easier maintenance.
Key Characteristics
- Parts in contact with the pumped liquid are hermetically separated from the stator by a stainless-steel spherical separator.
- The bearing has no play and a single bearing point, resulting in very low friction, reduced power input, and noise.
Electrical Insulation
All Grundfos COMFORT PM models are double insulated (Protection Class II), eliminating the need for a protective earth connector. Figure 13 shows the Protection Class II symbol.
Motor
The motor is a single-phase, 12-pole, permanent-magnet type, compliant with EMC directives. It features a green indicator light when running and is impedance-protected and short-circuit-proof, requiring no additional motor protection. The terminal box is accessible with functional cable terminals, featuring a tight cable entry with relief. Enclosure class is IP44, and insulation class is F.

Stator
The stator creates a magnetic field that directly drives the magnetic rotor, causing it to rotate. Axial magnetic field components stabilize the rotor.
Spherical Separator
This stainless-steel component hermetically seals the water-conducting part from the motor's electrical components without an additional seal. Figure 14 illustrates the spherical separator.
Bearing Pin and Bearing Ball
The stainless-steel bearing pin is laser-welded to the spherical separator and bearing ball. Figure 15 shows the bearing pin.
Rotor
The rotor is gimbal-mounted on the bearing ball via its own step bearing. Figure 16 shows the rotor.
Pump Housing
Designed for high hydraulic efficiency, converting impeller energy into pressure. Threads allow connection to standard pipe dimensions. Figure 17 shows pump housings with and without valves.
Union Nut
Ensures a tight connection between the motor and pump housing. Its thread type presses the seal ring evenly across the sealing face. Figure 19 shows the union nut.
Isolating Valve and Non-Return Valve
Types BX (Europe) and BU (USA) include a built-in isolating valve (isolates inlet side for maintenance) and a non-return valve (isolates outlet side during maintenance).
Seal Ring
A single seal ring between the motor and pump housing, made of hydrolysis and aging-resistant material for extended pump life. Figure 18 shows the seal ring.

5. Performance Curves
Curve Conditions
The performance curves are based on the following conditions:
- Test Liquid: Airless water.
- Measurement Temperature: 20°C (68°F).
- Curves represent average values and are not guarantee curves. Individual measurements are required for specific minimum performance needs.
- Kinematic Viscosity: The curves apply to a kinematic viscosity of 1 mm²/s (1 cSt).
- Head to Pressure Conversion: Based on water density (ρ = 1000 kg/m³). For liquids with different densities, outlet pressure is proportional to density.
