Leviton VIZIØ6-1L Incandescent Dimmer
This document provides installation instructions for the Leviton VIZIØ6-1L, a Single Pole (One location) or 3-Way (Multi-location) Incandescent Dimmer. It is rated for 600W, 120VAC, 60Hz.
Warnings and Cautions
- To be installed and/or used in accordance with appropriate electrical codes and regulations.
- Consult a qualified electrician if unsure about any part of these instructions.
- Do not install to control receptacles, fluorescent lighting, motors, or transformer-operated appliances to avoid overheating.
- Use only with incandescent or 120V halogen fixtures.
- Vizia™ dimmers are not compatible with standard 3-way or 4-way switches; use compatible Vizia™ remotes for multi-location dimming.
- Use only one (1) Vizia™ dimmer in a multi-location circuit with up to 9 coordinating remotes (no LEDs) or up to 4 matching remotes (with LEDs).
- Dimmer may not operate with dioded lamps (e.g., Sylvania Designer 16™, Philips PAR-16™).
- Total minimum load must exceed 40W.
- Dimmer may feel warm during normal operation.
- Recommended minimum wall box depth is 2-1/2 inches.
- Maximum wire length from dimmer to all installed remotes cannot exceed 300 ft.
- Disconnect power at circuit breaker or fuse before servicing, installing, or removing.
- Use only with copper or copper-clad wire. For aluminum wire, use devices marked CO/ALR or CU/AL.
Tools Needed for Installation

Changing the Color of Your Dimmer
If a color change kit is provided and desired, follow specific instructions for color replacement. Otherwise, proceed to installation.
Installing Your Dimmer
Note: Use check boxes [ ] when steps are completed.
Step 1: Turn Off Power
WARNING: To avoid fire, shock, or death, turn off power at the circuit breaker or fuse and test that power is off before wiring.
Step 2: Identify Wiring Application
Note: If wall box wiring does not match configurations, consult a qualified electrician.
Single-Pole Wiring Application:
Identifies wires: 1. Line (Hot), 2. Neutral, 3. Ground, 4. Load.
3-Way Wiring Application:
Identifies wires: 1. Line or Load (tag common wire), 2. Neutral, 3. Ground, 4. First Traveler (note color), 5. Second Traveler (note color). For matching remote with LEDs, the First Traveler becomes Line Hot.
Important for 3-Way: Tag the common wire (usually black or labeled 'Common') from the old switch with electrical tape.
Step 3: Preparing and Connecting Wires
This dimmer uses side wire terminal screws or backwire openings. Ensure appropriate wire stripping:
Wire Stripping: Measure bare wire to 5/8" (1.6 cm) or use the gage on the back of the dimmer. Cut wires straight if necessary.
Side Wire Connection: Accepts #14 AWG solid copper wire only.
Back Wire: Accepts #14-12 AWG solid copper wire only.
General Preparation: Make wire ends straight. Remove insulation as shown. Proceed to Step 4 based on application.
Step 4a: Single-Pole Wiring Application
Wiring Dimmer:
Connect wires per diagram:
- Green or bare copper wire to Green terminal screw.
- Line Hot wall box wire to terminal screw marked "BK".
- Load wall box wire to terminal screw marked "RD".
- Dimmer terminal screw marked "YL/RD" should have a Red insulation label. If not, cover with electrical tape.
Proceed to Step 5.
Step 4b: 3-Way Wiring with Coordinating Remote (no LEDs)
Wiring Dimmer:
Note: Dimmer can be on Line or Load side. Max wire length to remotes: 300 ft.
- Green or bare copper wire to Green terminal screw.
- Line Hot (common) wire to terminal screw marked "BK".
- First Traveler wire to terminal screw marked "RD". This traveler connects to the remote's "RD" terminal.
- Remove Red label from "YL/RD" terminal.
- Second Traveler wire to terminal screw marked "YL/RD". This traveler connects to the remote's "YL/RD" terminal.
Wiring Coordinating Remote:
- Green or bare copper wire to Green terminal screw.
- Load wall box wire to terminal screw marked "BK".
- First Traveler wire to terminal screw marked "RD". This traveler connects to the dimmer's "RD" terminal.
- Second Traveler wire to terminal screw marked "YL/RD". This traveler connects to the dimmer's "YL/RD" terminal.
- Remote terminal screw marked "WH" should have a White insulation label. If not, cover with electrical tape.
Proceed to Step 5.
Step 4c: 3-Way Wiring with Matching Remote (with LEDs)
Note: Dimmer requires a Load connection. Remote requires Line Hot and Neutral. An additional Neutral wire may be needed for the remote.
Wiring Matching Remote (wall box with Line Hot):
- Green or bare copper wire to Green terminal screw.
- Line Hot (common) wire and First Traveler to dimmer terminal screw marked "BK".
- Second Traveler wire to remote terminal screw marked "YL/RD". This traveler connects to the dimmer's "YL/RD" terminal.
- Line Neutral wall box wire to remote terminal screw marked "WH".
Wiring Dimmer (wall box with Load connection):
- Green or bare copper wire to Green terminal screw.
- Load wall box wire to dimmer terminal screw marked "RD".
- First Traveler Line Hot to dimmer terminal screw marked "BK".
- Remove Red label from "YL/RD" terminal.
- Second Traveler wire to dimmer terminal screw marked "YL/RD". This traveler connects to the remote's "YL/RD" terminal.
Proceed to Step 5.
Step 5: Testing Your Dimmer
Note: Have a flashlight ready if this is the only light source.
Preparation: Position wires for space in the wall box. Ensure [TOP] is facing up on the device strap. Partially screw in mounting screws.
Testing:
- Restore power at the circuit breaker or fuse.
- Press the push pad until the locator light turns OFF. Lights should turn ON.
- If lights do not turn ON, press the upper half of the DIM/BRIGHT bar until lights brighten.
- If lights still do not turn ON, refer to the Troubleshooting section.
Operation
Note: The locator light illuminates when the load is OFF, aiding visibility in the dark.
Note for 3-Way: Lights turn ON to the brightness set on the dimmer's DIM/BRIGHT bar. Control is possible from either the dimmer or remote location.
Push Pad
- Turn ON from OFF: Tap for preset level, Press and Hold for full bright.
- Turn OFF from ON: Tap to turn lights OFF.
DIM/BRIGHT Bar
- BRIGHTEN: Press upper half of bar to increase brightness.
- DIM: Press lower half of bar to decrease brightness. Holding the lower half dims to minimum and turns lights OFF.
Note: When lights are OFF, the DIM/BRIGHT bar can be used to set the ON brightness level.
If power is interrupted, lights will return to the last setting upon restoration.
Step 6: Dimmer Mounting
Turn off power at circuit breaker or fuse.
Mounting: Tighten mounting screws into the wall box. Attach the wallplate.
Step 7: Restore Power
Restore power at the circuit breaker or fuse. Installation is complete.
Advanced Programming Features
Air-Gap Switch: Gently pull the bottom of the push pad until it lifts and clicks, turning OFF all LEDs. This cuts power to the fixture for bulb replacement. Push pad back in for normal operation.
To Program:
Note: Have a flashlight handy.
- Engage the air-gap switch (pull bottom of push pad until it lifts and clicks, all LEDs OFF).
- Press push pad back in and hold for 7 seconds until locator light and top LED (LED 1) blink.
- Mode 1 (Set Minimum Brightness): Locator light blinks once per second. Use DIM/BRIGHT bar to set minimum brightness (1-50%). Setting is saved automatically.
- Mode 2 (Set Dim-Lock Level): Tap push pad. Locator light blinks twice per second. Use DIM/BRIGHT bar to set ON brightness (1-100%). To disable, press and hold lower half of bar until no LED is lit. Setting is saved.
- Mode 3 (Set Fade Rate): Tap push pad. Locator light blinks 3 times per second. Use DIM/BRIGHT bar to select fade rate (1-7 presets). Setting is saved by tapping push pad to exit.
LED Brightness Display: 7 segments, LED 1 (top) to LED 7 (bottom), represent preset levels.

Note: Program mode exits after 3 minutes of inactivity.
Troubleshooting
- Lights Flickering: Bad lamp connection or loose wire connections.
- Light does not turn ON / Locator LED does not turn ON: Circuit breaker tripped, lamp burned out, or lamp neutral not wired.
- Intermittent dimmer operation: Minimum load is under 40W.
- Remote does not operate lights: Ensure total wire length does not exceed 300 ft.
