Precautions for Pruning

  • When pruning branches under a fallen tree, ensure the trunk is supported to prevent rolling. Trim branches from the main pole and avoid standing on the log.

Precautions for Logging

  • Inexperienced personnel should not approach dangerous logging sites. Do not cut wood alone.
  • Be aware of falling branches or objects that could injure onlookers.
  • Judge the direction of tree fall for a smooth descent.
  • Keep bystanders, children, and animals at a safe distance (2.5 tree lengths).
  • Observe tree crowns and adjacent trees to avoid interference during fall.
  • When the tree falls, the trunk may break or spring towards the operator; plan and use escape routes. Do not go uphill.
  • Clear obstacles from the work and escape routes.
  • Avoid using hinges or unstable ropes. Use stabilizing ropes. If the tree falls prematurely, follow the escape route.
  • When cutting, if the guide plate touches an object or clamps the chain, it may cause rebound.
  • If the tree fall direction is uncontrollable or falls onto other trees, stop the operation and use a vehicle to pull the tree with a rope.

Rebound Warning

The chain saw may rebound under the following conditions:

  • The guide plate head contacts a hard object or emergency brake.
  • The head of the running chain saw guide is touched.

Diagram Description (Figure 2): Illustrates conditions that may cause the chain saw to rebound.

Pull Warning

When cutting from top to bottom, the pulling force is opposite to the operator.

Operation of Timber Making

⚠️ If the chain saw rebounds, it may spring towards the operator, causing serious or fatal injury.

  • When cutting, cut at full speed.
  • Do not cut with the guide head.
  • Keep the chain saw at full speed and the guide plate vertical.
  • Expose the cut trees according to the width of the guide plate.
  • Add the weight of the chain saw to the guide plate.

Diagram Description: Illustrations show the correct technique for timber making cuts.

Pruning of Branches

  • Place the chain saw guide on the branch to be pruned.
  • Cut at full speed.

Timbering

  1. Confirm Escape Route:
    • Plan an escape route at a 45° angle in the reverse direction of tree inversion.
    • Ensure the escape route is free of obstacles.
    • Observe the top of the tree.

Diagram Description: Shows a tree with escape routes marked at 45° angles.

  2. Root Treatment of Cut Trees:
    • Clear obstacles under trees and work areas.
    • Clean up excess root parts.
    • For large trees with thick stumps, cut vertically before horizontally to remove excess root.
  3. Cut Out the Oblique Opening:

The oblique cut determines the direction of the tree. Cut an oblique cut on the toppling side, close to the ground. Make a horizontal cut from 1/5 to 1/3 of the trunk diameter, then cut diagonally. Do not cut the oblique cut too deep.

    • Cut off the whole width of the oblique incision.
    • The dorsal incision should be slightly higher than the oblique incision's baseline, horizontal, leaving about 1/10 of the stem diameter between them.
    • The uncut fiber acts as a hinge; do not cut the trunk completely. Insert a wedge on the back side incision.
    • Use only plastic or aluminum wedges; iron wedges are not allowed when the trunk is disconnected.
