Introduction to the Agilent Micro GC System

This manual provides comprehensive guidance for the operation of the Agilent P200 and P200H Micro Gas Chromatographs (GCs). These advanced, self-contained, and miniaturized GCs are engineered for rapid and precise gas analysis. They are designed to work seamlessly with the powerful Windows™-based EZChrom 200 software, which handles data management and instrument control, offering a complete and user-friendly gas analysis solution.

The Micro GC system enables high-speed gas analysis directly in the field. Each unit is equipped with one or two GC modules, an integrated carrier gas cylinder, and a rechargeable battery pack, ensuring portability and convenience.

The P200 model is optimized for analyzing gases with boiling points up to 150°C at ambient temperature. The P200H model extends this capability by analyzing heated samples (up to 110°C) with boiling points up to 220°C, and is also suitable for samples containing H2O vapor.

When used with a personal computer and the EZChrom 200 data system, the P200/P200H Micro GC allows users to:

  • Analyze gas samples at their source, minimizing sample transfer complexities and delays.
  • Conduct high-resolution gas analysis in mere seconds.
  • Efficiently manage instrument settings, including peak identification tables, calibration tables, and integration parameters.
  • Control instrument operation, upload/download experimental conditions, and monitor status.
  • Catalog and retrieve chromatographic data, integrate observed peaks, and set up automated sequences.
  • Perform calibration sequences and manipulate data displays using intuitive tools like zooming and scrolling.
  • Generate detailed analysis reports, including area%, normalization, and external standard calculations, for robust data accountability.
  • Store results in various formats for easy integration with spreadsheet applications.

Key Features and Components

Leveraging technology developed for integrated circuit manufacturing, the Micro GC's components are fabricated on silicon wafers through batch processing. This method ensures the production of repeatable, reliable, and inert components with minimal dead volume. The P200/P200H features a micromachined injection system, microbore analytical and reference columns, and a micromachined solid-state detector (SSD). This integrated design within a single GC module provides enhanced reliability and minimal band broadening, crucial for achieving high-resolution gas analysis.

Carrier Gas: Supports externally connectable supplies of Helium, Nitrogen, or Argon at 80 psi input.

Power:

  • P200: Internal 12-volt rechargeable lead-acid battery or 12 VDC power supply, offering 6 to 8 hours of operation with a maximum of 30 watts.
  • P200H: Internal 12-volt rechargeable lead-acid battery or 12 VDC power supply, providing 4 hours of operation with a maximum of 60 watts.

Environmental:

  • Operating temperature range: 0°C to 50°C.
  • Humidity range: 0 to 95% non-condensing.

Physical Dimensions:

  • P200: 15 cm (6 inches) high, 36 cm (14 inches) wide, 36 cm (14 inches) deep, weighing 10.4 kg (23 lb).
  • P200H: 15 cm (6 inches) high, 36 cm (14 inches) wide, 36 cm (14 inches) deep, weighing 13.2 kg (29 lb).

  • Ground the instrument: Connect the instrument chassis and cabinet to an electrical ground to minimize shock hazards. Use the provided three-conductor ac power cable.
  • Do not operate in explosive atmospheres: Avoid operating the instrument in environments containing flammable gases or fumes.
  • Keep away from live circuits: Disconnect power and discharge circuits before touching internal components. Only qualified personnel should perform internal service or adjustments.
  • Do not substitute parts or modify instrument: Use only approved parts and do not perform unauthorized modifications. Return the instrument to Agilent Technologies for service.
  • Do not over-pressurize internal gas cylinder: Adhere to the specified pressure limits for the internal gas cylinder. Use only approved carrier gases and refill kits.
  • Only Use Supplied Power Source: Utilize only the recommended Agilent power supplies to prevent equipment failure and potential injury.
  • Hot surfaces: Be aware of and avoid contact with heated surfaces, such as the heated inlets on the P200H, which can reach temperatures up to 110°C.
