LX Sim v1.23 User Manual and Guide

LX Sim v1.23 User Manual

This document provides instructions and information for using LX Sim, a flight simulation software developed by LXNAV.

Introduction

What is LX Sim

LX Sim is a fully functional simulation tool for Windows operating systems. It allows users to experience the LX8000, LX8080, LX9000, LX9050, and LX9070 aviation instruments on a personal computer. The manual uses specific symbols to convey information:

  • Yellow triangle: Indicates parts of the manual that require very careful reading.
  • 💡 Light bulb icon: Indicates a useful hint for the reader.

System requirements

LX Sim is designed for Windows operating systems. Minimum requirements are:

  • Pentium processor
  • Windows XP or higher
  • .NET Framework 2.0
  • 20 MB of free disk space

Installing and uninstalling

To install LX Sim, download the installation program from the LXNAV website (www.lxnav.com) and follow the on-screen instructions. To uninstall, navigate to the LX Sim group in the program menu and run the uninstall icon, or use the Control Panel's "Add or Remove Programs" feature.

Starting LX Sim

After successful installation, an LX Sim program group is created, and an icon is placed on your desktop. Double-click the icon to launch the simulator.

Getting started

LX Sim window

Upon starting, LX Sim displays the interface of an LX9000 instrument. The instrument has full functionality and is controlled via mouse clicks on buttons and rotation of knobs, mimicking the real device. Knobs can also be rotated by hovering the mouse cursor over them and scrolling. Keyboard shortcuts, detailed in the next section, offer an alternative control method. The window features a menu bar at the top.

All controls and functions are described in the LX80xx & LX90xx manual, available on www.lxnav.com.

Keyboard shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts can also be used to control the instrument. The following diagrams illustrate these mappings:

LX8000 and LX8080

Visual Description: A screenshot of the LX8000 simulator interface is shown, with various keyboard keys labeled and pointing to corresponding functions or controls within the simulator. Key mappings include:

  • "Home" and "End" keys for specific functions.
  • "1", "2", "3" keys for certain actions.
  • Arrow keys ("Left", "Right", "Up", "Down") for navigation.
  • "Q", "W", "E", "R" keys for specific controls.
  • "Page Up" and "Page Down" keys for screen adjustments.

Below the simulator screenshot is an image of a standard QWERTY keyboard, highlighting the keys mentioned.

LX900, LX9050 and LX9070

Visual Description: A screenshot of the LX9050 simulator interface is displayed, similar to the LX8000 view but with slight interface differences. Keyboard keys are labeled and mapped to simulator functions:

  • "Page Up" and "Page Down" keys for screen adjustments.
  • "1", "2", "3", "4" keys for specific actions.
  • Arrow keys ("Left", "Right", "Up", "Down") for navigation.
  • "Q", "W", "E", "R" keys for specific controls.

A QWERTY keyboard image is shown below, indicating the relevant keys.

Main menu

File

The "Open" option allows loading an .igc file from a previous flight, which will restart and simulate that flight. The "Exit" option closes the program. Alternatively, pressing the Alt+F4 key combination also exits the program.

LX Sim is preloaded with the ALPS map. To simulate flights outside this region, additional maps must be installed as described in Chapter 4.

Device type

This option allows switching the type of device the program simulates. Users can choose between LX8000, LX8080, LX9000, LX9050, and LX9070. For the LX9000, LX9050, and LX9070, users can also select horizontal or vertical orientation.

Screen scale

This menu allows adjusting the screen scale from 10% to 100%. The default setting is 100%. This function is useful if the monitor is too small to display the full screen scale.

Play

Starts the simulation. If an .igc file was loaded, it will be the simulated flight. Clicking "Play" changes the button to "Pause". Clicking again un-pauses the simulation.

Speed

Adjusts the simulation speed. The default speed is 10x, but it can be decreased to 1x (real-time) or increased up to 200x.

About

The "About" dialog displays information about the current version of the LX Sim program.

SD Card

The SD Card function is used for transferring files to and from LX Sim, mirroring the process on the actual instrument. Click on "SD Card" (indicated by a red marker in the visual) to open the file browser. Select a folder to import or export files. Files can also be transferred via Setup > Files.

Visual Description: A screenshot shows the LXNAV instrument interface with the "SD Card" option highlighted. The interface includes menu items like "File", "Device Type", "Screen Scale", "Play", "Speed", and "About".

LX Sim also supports custom styles that can be created on the instrument or using the LX Styler tool available on www.lxnav.com.

LX Sim Maps

LX Sim includes a preloaded map of the ALPS region to keep the application size manageable. If a flight from another region is loaded, no map may be displayed (black background). Missing maps can be installed as described below.

Installation via SeeYou

Maps consist of two files:

  • Earth.cit
  • Elev.cit

EARTH.cit installation

  1. Run SeeYou, then go to File -> Mobile Wizard or press Ctrl+F9.
  2. Tick only "Terrain" (select high details) and "Roads, Rails, Lakes and Towns". Leave all other options unticked.
  3. Press "Next" and enter "earth" as the "Files base name".
  4. Under "destination", select "Copy to My Computer" and press the "Browse" button.
  5. Navigate to the LX Sim installation folder, typically c:\Program Files (x86)\LXNAV\LXSim.
  6. Select the data subfolder (c:\Program Files (x86)\LXNAV\LXSim\data\). This folder should already contain an earth.cit file.
  7. Select the desired region.
  8. Press "Next" again.
  9. Press "Next" again.

ELEV.cit installation

  1. Run Mobile Wizard again.
  2. Tick only "Terrain elevations". Leave all other options unticked.
  3. Press "Next" and enter "elev" as the "Files base name".
  4. Under "destination", select "Copy to My Computer" and press the "Browse" button.
  5. Navigate to the LX Sim installation folder, typically c:\Program Files (x86)\LXNAV\LXSim.
  6. Select the data subfolder (c:\Program Files (x86)\LXNAV\LXSim\data\). This folder should already contain an earth.cit file.
  7. Select the desired region.
  8. Press "Next" again.
  9. Press "Next" again.

SeeYou is flight planning and analysis software available from Naviter (http://www.naviter.com/).

Download EARTH and ELEV.cit from the web

If you do not have SeeYou software, you can download both files from the LXNAV website at https://gliding.lxnav.com/lxdownloads/maps/ and install them as described in the following section.

Installation procedure

  1. Search for the LX Sim installation folder, typically c:\Program Files (x86)\LXNAV\LXSim.
  2. Select the data subfolder (c:\Program Files (x86)\LXNAV\LXSim\data\) and copy both earth.cit and elev.cit files into it.
