Phoenix Phase Converters GP75PL 75 HP Rotary Phase Converter
Important Notes Before Installation
- Crucial Step: Never start the phase converter with a load connected, including transformers.
- Verify incoming service with your electric company. Ensure the transformer's KVA size is larger than the idler motor's HP.
- Connection Method: Do not use wire nuts for any connections; use bolt-down lugs exclusively.
- Check all connections, including factory connections to the power block, and re-secure them after a few weeks of use.
- Power-Up Procedure: If the idler motor does not reach full speed upon powering up, shut down the phase converter immediately. Failure to do so may damage the idler motor, voiding the warranty. Consult a qualified electrician if unsure.
- Installation must be performed by a licensed industrial electrician. These guidelines do not supersede local and state laws.
Power Requirements
- Use a motor load type breaker; avoid quick blow or trip breakers.
- Breaker Sizing for Single Machine: Double the machine's amp size for inductive loads (motors). Example: If a machine draws 20 amps, use a 40 amp breaker.
- Breaker Sizing for Multiple Machines: Double the amp size of the largest machine and add the amp draw of other machines that will run simultaneously. Example: For a 20 AMP Lathe, 9 AMP Saw, and 6 AMP Milling Machine, calculate as (20 AMP x 2) + 9 AMP + 6 AMP = 40 + 9 + 6 = 55 AMPs. Use the next standard size breaker, which would be a 50 Amp two-pole breaker.
- Consult the provided chart for minimum and maximum allowed breaker sizes. For rural areas, increase the minimum breaker size by 20%.
Wire and Breaker Sizes for Single Phase Input:
- Idler Motor Wiring: 1/0 AWG Copper
- Incoming Service Wiring (Under 50 feet): 4/0 AWG Copper
- Breaker/Fuse: Minimum 125 AMP, Maximum 350 AMP
Connecting the Idler Motor Wires
This section provides an illustration of wire connections. Use bolt-down lugs, not wire nuts.
For motors with 9 leads, refer to specific wiring diagrams. For motors with 12 leads, refer to specific wiring diagrams.
Wiring Diagram Overview
The diagram illustrates the connections between the single-phase power source and the 3-phase output.
- Single Phase Circuit Breaker Panel (230 Volts): Connects to the Motor Load Type Breaker.
- Motor Load Type Breaker (125 to 350 AMPS): Protects the circuit.
- Disconnect: Recommended for NL Models or if wiring exceeds 50 feet. Check state codes.
- Phase Converter Panel: Receives single-phase power and outputs three-phase power.
- Idler Motor / Generator: The motor that creates the third phase.
- Incoming Service Wiring: 4/0 Copper Wire (Under 50').
- Idler Motor Wiring: 1/0 AWG Copper Wire.
Specific connection details for the Idler Motor/Generator for low voltage are located inside the lid of the connection box or on the nameplate.
