Read First - Before Installation
CAUTION: READ INSTRUCTIONS BEFORE OPERATING
- This is the most important step to know.
- NEVER start the phase converter with a load, including transformers.
- Verify your incoming service. Contact your electric company to confirm the KVA size of the transformer. The KVA number should be larger than the HP of the idler motor.
- DO NOT use WIRE NUTS for any connection; use the bolt-down lugs.
- Ensure all connections, including factory connections to the power block, are secure. Recheck connections after a few weeks of use.
- If the idler does NOT come up to FULL SPEED when powering up the unit, shut the phase converter down immediately. If unsure, contact Phoenix Phase Converters or a qualified electrician. Failure to shut down may damage the idler motor, which will not be covered under warranty.
- Installation must be performed by a licensed industrial electrician. These guidelines do not supersede local and state laws.
Power Requirements
- Use a motor load type breaker; avoid quick-blow or trip breakers.
- For a single machine with an inductive load (motors), size the breaker at double the machine's amperage. For example, if the equipment draws 20 amps, use a 40 amp breaker.
- For multiple machines, double the amp rating of the largest machine and add the amperage of other machines that will run simultaneously. For instance, a 20 AMP Lathe, a 9 amp saw, and a 6 amp milling machine: (20 x 2) + 9 + 6 = 45 amps. Use the next standard size breaker, which would be a 50 Amp two-pole breaker.
- Consult the chart to ensure you do not exceed the minimum and maximum allowed breaker sizes. For rural areas, increase the minimum breaker size by 20%.
Wire and Breaker Sizes
Specification | Size |
---|---|
SINGLE PHASE (under 50 feet) | 2 AWG Copper |
IDLER MOTOR | 3 AWG COPPER |
BREAKER/FUSE | 50 MIN / 150 MAX |
Mounting the Phase Converter Panel
Mount the enclosure first to a non-vibrating surface. Two mounting options are provided. Install the back plate using the four provided nuts. Mounting the phase converter panel near the breaker panel is recommended. The single-phase line is the larger wire; keep it as short as possible. Increase the size of the single-phase wire for every 50 feet of run.
Additional mounting brackets and hardware are included inside the enclosure.
The enclosure is IP65 WATERPROOF & WEATHERPROOF, suitable for indoor or outdoor use.

PL and PH Models Wiring Diagram
[Diagram Description: A comprehensive wiring diagram illustrates the connection sequence for PL and PH models. It shows the Single Phase Circuit Breaker Panel, a Disconnect (if run is over 50 feet), the Phase Converter Panel, and the Idler/Generator Motor. Wire gauges (2 AWG Copper, 3 AWG Copper) and lengths are indicated. Notes specify 230V connections for NL and PL models (low voltage) and 460V connections for NH and PH models (high voltage). The diagram also indicates that the connection diagram is located on the nameplate or inside the cover of the connection box.]
Important Installation Note: MUST BE INSTALLED BY AN INDUSTRIAL LICENSED ELECTRICIAN.
Breaker Sizing: Motor Load Breaker should be sized twice the full load amps of your equipment.
Wiring Notes:
- 9 Wire Idler Motor: Lead 1,7 to L1. Lead 2,8 to L2. Lead 3,9 to L3. Leads 4,5,6 connected together.
- 12 Wire Idler Motor: Leads 1,7,6,12 to L1. Leads 2,4,10,12 to L2. Leads 3,5,9,11 to L3.
