Thank you for selecting the Extech UV-AB Light Meter Model UV505. This device measures UV-AB ultraviolet light in the 290~390 nm wavelength range. - Do not use this meter with direct sunlight or in any excessively hot and/or humid location.
- Do not immerse the meter in liquids.
UV Safety Information
Exercise extreme caution when using this meter to test an ultraviolet light source. Exposure to UV radiation can be dangerous depending on the exposure time, radiation intensity, wavelength, and individual sensitivity to ultraviolet rays.
Meter Description
The UV-AB Light Meter Model UV505 features a compact design with an LCD display and several control buttons.
Physical Components:
- 1. Light Sensor: Located at the top, covered by a protective cap when not in use.
- 2. LCD Display: Shows measurement readings, units, and status indicators.
- 3. Backlight Button (?): Activates the LCD backlight.
- 4. Zero Button (?️): Used to zero the meter.
- 5. ON-OFF Button (?): Powers the meter on and off.
- 6. Unit Button (?): Toggles between measurement units (mW/cm² and μW/cm²).
- 7. Data Hold Button (⏸️): Freezes the current reading on the display.
Note: The battery compartment and tripod mount are located on the rear of the meter.

Button Functions:
- ON/OFF Button (?): Press to turn the meter on or off.
- Data Hold Button (⏸️): Press to freeze/unfreeze readings on the display.
- Unit Button (?): Press briefly to alternate between μW/cm² and mW/cm².
- Backlight Button (?): Press briefly to turn on the backlight. The backlight automatically turns off after 10 seconds.
- Zero Button (?️): With the sensor protective cap in place, press to zero the display. Press again to exit zero mode.
Operation
Powering the Meter
Press the power button (?) to turn the meter on or off. If the LCD does not turn on, check the batteries located in the rear battery compartment. The meter automatically shuts off after 15 minutes of inactivity.
Zeroing the Sensor
With the sensor protective cap in place, press the Zero button (?️) to zero the display before taking measurements. A "ZERO" indicator will appear on the display while the meter is zeroing. Press the Zero button (?️) again to exit zero mode; the "ZERO" indicator will turn off.
Taking Measurements
Remove the sensor cap and point the light sensor towards the UV light source. View the measurement on the meter's display.
Selecting Range and Measurement Unit
Press the Unit button (?) briefly to alternate the range between (mW/cm² and μW/cm²); the lower display area will show the selected range.
Data Hold
Press the Hold button (⏸️) briefly to freeze or unfreeze a reading on the display.
Backlight
The LCD is equipped with a backlight for easier viewing, especially in dimly lit areas. Press the Backlight button (?) briefly to turn on the backlight. The backlight automatically turns off after 10 seconds.
Measurement Considerations
- Keep the light sensor clean and free of scratches. Clean gently with a dry, lint-free cloth.
- Avoid reflections or shadows on the sensor during measurements.
- For best accuracy, repeat the measurement several times to ensure the light source remained stable.
Maintenance
Battery Replacement
- Turn off the meter.
- Press and hold the lock button above the battery compartment (rear of the meter) and slide the battery compartment door off in a downward motion (⬇️).
- Replace the two 1.5 V AAA batteries, observing correct polarity. Reassemble the meter before use.
Battery Safety: Dispose of batteries responsibly; never throw batteries into a fire, as they may explode or leak. If the meter is not used for more than 60 days, remove the batteries and store them separately.
Never dispose of used or rechargeable batteries with household waste. As consumers, users are legally obligated to return used batteries to appropriate collection points, the store where the batteries were purchased, or other locations where batteries are sold.
Disposal: Do not dispose of this instrument with household waste. The user is obligated to return end-of-life devices to a designated collection point for the disposal of electrical and electronic equipment.
Cleaning and Storage
Periodically clean the outer casing with a damp cloth and mild detergent; do not use abrasive products or solvents. Use a dry, lint-free dusting cloth to clean debris and dust from the sensor. Avoid any materials that could potentially scratch the sensor surface.
