Fenix PD40R V2.0 LED Flashlight
This document provides comprehensive instructions for the Fenix PD40R V2.0 LED flashlight.
Intelligent Protection
The flashlight accumulates significant heat when used on Turbo output for extended periods. To prevent overheating and maintain user comfort, the light features an intelligent temperature control system. When the internal temperature reaches 65°C (149°F) or above, the flashlight will automatically reduce its output level in steps until it reaches the Medium mode. Once the temperature drops below 65°C, the output can be restored to the selected mode by rotating the tail switch. This specification is based on laboratory testing, and actual performance may vary slightly depending on environmental conditions.
ℹ️ Note: The above specification is the test result given by Fenix through its laboratory testing. Actual output may vary slightly according to the working environments.

Battery Replacement
Unscrew the tail cap. Insert a battery with the positive (+) end facing the light head. Screw the tail cap back on securely to operate.
Battery Level Indicator
Upon turning on the flashlight, the battery level indicator light will illuminate for 3 seconds to display the remaining battery power:
- Solid Green: Approximately 100% - 85% charged.
- Flashing Green: Approximately 85% - 50% charged.
- Solid Red: Approximately 50% - 25% charged.
- Flashing Red: Approximately 25% - 1% charged (critically low).
ℹ️ Note: This indicator is effective only for Fenix ARB-L21 series rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.
Battery Selection
⚠️ Warning: Do not mix batteries of different brands, sizes, capacities, or types. Doing so may cause damage to the flashlight or to the batteries being used.
*21700 Li-ion batteries are powerful cells designed for commercial applications and must be treated with caution and handled with care. Only use quality batteries with circuit protection, as this reduces the potential for combustion or explosion; however, cell damage or short-circuiting are potential risks the user assumes.
Battery Type | Size/Specification | Nominal Voltage | Recommendation |
---|---|---|---|
Fenix ARB-L21 | 21700* | 3.6V | Recommended ✔️✔️ |
Other Rechargeable Li-ion Battery | 21700* | 3.6V | Use with Caution ❗ |
Other Rechargeable Li-ion Battery | 18650 | 3.6V | Banned ❌ |
⚠️ Warning: Please do not mix batteries of different types, new and old, to avoid damaging the battery or flashlight.
*21700 Li-ion batteries are industrial cells, not civilian batteries with safety guarantees. If the battery quality is poor or used improperly (short circuit, high temperature, etc.), combustion or explosion may occur, endangering personal safety. If you use this type of battery, you must understand the risks and voluntarily assume the corresponding responsibilities. Using high-quality Li-ion batteries with protection circuits will reduce the risk to some extent.
Charging Instructions
Follow these steps for charging:
- Turn off the flashlight. Remove the dust cap from the flashlight's neck. Insert the USB Type-C end of the charging cable into the flashlight's charging port.
- Once the flashlight receives a charging signal, the charging indicator light will turn red. It will turn green when charging is complete.
- After charging is finished, unplug the charging cable and securely replace the dust cap to protect the USB port.
ℹ️ Notes:
- Charging the included Fenix ARB-L21-5000 rechargeable lithium-ion battery from nearly depleted to fully charged takes approximately 3 hours.
- Due to the battery's slow self-discharge, it is recommended to recharge the battery approximately every four months if the flashlight is not in use for extended periods, to prevent battery damage.
- During charging, the flashlight can be turned on at a low brightness level, but this will extend the charging time.
Low Voltage Warning
When the flashlight detects a critically low battery voltage, it will gradually reduce its output to the Low mode. If the voltage remains critically low in Low mode, the battery indicator light will flash red, signaling the need for a recharge. This prevents premature battery aging or damage. To ensure continuous usability, the flashlight will not shut down automatically but will continue to operate in this warning state until the battery is completely depleted.
ℹ️ Note: This low voltage warning is effective only with the Fenix ARB-L21 series rechargeable lithium-ion batteries.
If the battery voltage is no longer sufficient for the current brightness level, it will be reduced to the next lower level until the "Dark" level is reached. The indicator LED will then flash red to remind you to charge immediately. The flashlight will remain on until the protection circuit switches off the battery.
ℹ️ Note: This function works reliably only with the Fenix ARB-L21 21700 Lilon battery.

ℹ️ Note: The technical data above were tested with one Fenix ARB-L21-5000 21700 Lilon battery under laboratory conditions at a temperature of 21±3°C and 50% - 80% humidity. Actual performance may vary depending on the flashlight used, battery, age, and environment.
*: The runtime in "Turbo" indicates the maximum runtime including brightness reduction due to temperature control.
The brightness will automatically increase again when the flashlight has cooled down.
Usage and Maintenance
- Never disassemble the sealed parts of the flashlight head, as this will void the warranty and may damage the flashlight.
- Use high-quality batteries. If the flashlight will not be used for an extended period, remove the battery to prevent potential damage from leakage or explosion of low-quality batteries.
- For Li-ion batteries, charge them before they are fully depleted. If the battery is completely depleted, charge it immediately. Li-ion batteries have no memory effect.
- Due to the rotary tail switch mechanism, the flashlight may accidentally turn on if compressed in a bag. To prevent this, loosen the tail cap slightly or remove the battery before packing.
- The O-ring may wear out with long-term use. If it becomes damaged, replace it with an identical O-ring to maintain the flashlight's water resistance.
- Periodically clean the flashlight's electrical contact surfaces with alcohol to ensure proper operation. Dirty contacts can cause flickering or failure to light up.
- If the above cleaning does not resolve the issue, please contact your dealer or distributor for warranty service.
- Fenix recommends using only high-quality batteries for safety and performance reasons.
