LEADER FOX Electric Bicycle Operating Instructions

Introduction

Welcome to the world of LEADER FOX electric bicycles. This comprehensive guide provides essential information for the optimal functioning of your e-bike. It covers everything from initial setup and general display usage to detailed explanations of various features and troubleshooting common issues.

What is an Electric Bicycle?

An electric bicycle is a conventional bicycle enhanced with an electric drive system to assist the rider. The motor is activated by pedaling, detected by a special sensor. You must continue pedaling for the motor to provide assistance. Some models may also feature a control button or accelerator for low-speed assistance (e.g., walk mode up to 6 KMPH). The maximum assisted speed is typically 25 KMPH, with a slight tolerance. When the battery is depleted or the motor is off, the e-bike functions as a standard bicycle without resistance. According to European standard EN 15194-1, electric bicycles conforming to these features are considered regular bicycles, allowing access to bike trails without a driver's license, though helmet use is mandatory for riders under 18.

Factors Influencing Electric Bicycle Range

Several factors impact the range of your LEADER FOX e-bike:

  • Tyre Resistance: Properly inflated tyres with low rolling resistance are crucial. Underinflated tyres reduce range.
  • E-bike Weight: Lighter e-bikes generally offer a greater range.
  • Battery Status: Ensure the battery is fully charged before each ride. Battery capacity diminishes with increased discharge cycles.
  • Track Profile and Surface: Hilly terrain and rough surfaces decrease range.
  • Riding Mode: Different riding modes affect power consumption and range.
  • Riding Continuity: Frequent braking and acceleration shorten the range.
  • Air Resistance: Riding posture and frame design influence air resistance.
  • Wind Strength: Strong headwinds reduce range, while tailwinds can increase it.
  • Rider and Load Weight: Heavier loads decrease range.
  • External Temperature: Lower temperatures reduce usable battery capacity.

Electric Set - M420

The M420 electric set system utilizes torque and wheel speed monitoring for pedal assist, ensuring safety and reliability. It features high starting torque (over 80 Nm), making it ideal for uphill riding. The system is efficient, offering low power consumption, long range, and quiet operation. Operating conditions include a temperature range of -20 to +45°C and 15-95% relative humidity. The unit is dustproof and waterproof (IP66) and certified with CE ROHS/EN14766/EN114764/REACH.

Safety Instructions

Battery: Do not expose the battery to fire or water. Do not use it for other appliances, dismantle, modify, or connect the poles incorrectly. Charger: Do not dismantle, modify, use for other appliances, expose to fire or water, touch with wet hands, or leave accessible to animals or children. Do not cover the charger and do not use it if broken.

Battery Charging and Maintenance

Charge the battery in a dry environment. Maintain at least 60% charge every three months, even when not in use. Do not cover the battery or charger, and avoid leaving the battery constantly connected to the power source. Recharging time is typically 1-7 hours. For optimal battery health, it is recommended to discharge the battery fully after each ride. Charging should occur in dry, covered areas between 5 to 40°C. The charging indicator LED turns green upon completion. Always switch off the battery after riding.

Normal Battery Behaviour

Intermittent motor operation may indicate low battery capacity. If the battery warms up, it is normal and protected by a temperature sensor; allow it to cool before riding. If total battery capacity seems reduced, perform three full charging cycles. Recharge the battery as soon as the charge indicator shows it is low; never leave it fully discharged. The battery automatically switches off if the bike is unused for over 30 minutes.

LCD Display - KD686

The KD686 is an intelligent ebike color display offering various functions for your riding needs. Key features include a smart battery indicator, real-time voltage/battery percentage, and intelligent display of trip mileage, total mileage (ODO), average speed (AVG), and remaining mileage. It also supports motor output power display, assist level adjustment, backlight control, walk mode, Type-C charging, and light sensing. Multiple parameter settings allow customization of display units, power settings, and more. The display has three buttons: ON/OFF, UP, and DOWN, for navigation and control.

General Operation

Power on the display by long-pressing the power button. The display automatically turns off after 5 minutes of inactivity. Pressing the “ON/OFF” button cycles through various display modes, including ODO, MAX, AVG, Time, Range, and Calories. The “DOWN” button activates walk mode (max 6 Km/h). Holding the “UP” button for over 2 seconds manually controls headlights and disables the light sensing function. Short presses of “UP” or “DOWN” adjust the assist level (PAS 0-5).

Display Settings

The display offers various settings accessible through the menu. These include Trip Reset, Unit conversion (Metric/Imperial), Brightness adjustment (5 levels), SOC View (Percentage/Voltage), Auto Off time, AL Sensitivity, and Set Voltage. Advanced settings allow for Max PAS gear selection, Wheel size adjustment, Speed Limit configuration, Password setup, Battery info, Controller info, and Language selection.

Maintenance

Regular maintenance includes keeping the electric bicycle clean, lubricating the chain, and checking connections and brakes. Ensure cables are not damaged to prevent electric shock. Battery transport must comply with dangerous goods regulations. Store batteries in a dry, well-ventilated place, away from heat sources. Avoid leaving batteries fully discharged; for long-term storage, keep them fully charged but not connected to the charger or installed in the bike. Li-Ion batteries are recyclable.

Possible Problems and Their Solutions

If the LCD display is not on, check battery charge, insertion, and connections. If the motor doesn't start with the walk assistance button, verify motor cable and display connections. For issues with pedaling activation, check the pedaling sensor connection, distance to the magnet disk, and ensure the disk is securely attached.

Electric Set Warranty

LEADER FOX offers a 24-month warranty on electric bicycle components for manufacturing and material defects. The battery has a 12-month warranty regarding capacity. The warranty is void if the product is tampered with, improperly handled, or damaged due to external factors. Warranty claims require proof of purchase and a warranty certificate.

Warnings

Pay attention to safety during use. Do not plug or unplug the display while powered on. Avoid bumps on the display and do not alter background settings without understanding the implications. If the display malfunctions, seek repair promptly. The e-bike is not intended for children under 15 or individuals unable to pedal independently. Avoid extreme temperatures and direct sunlight. Never submerge components in water or use a pressure washer. Do not tamper with electrical connections. Use only approved chargers and components.
